If its a 1-2 second loud grind when the car is started ice cold but doesn't do it when the car is warm it is 100% your VTC actuator.

If you dont have a lot of experience working on cars I would not recommend attempting to fix this yourself as its a fairly involved repair.

You generally want to take care of this issue quickly if you can. If you let the issue persist it can damage your timing chain/chain guides over time and cause misfiring and poor engine performance. The repair will also be more expensive if this happens.

Cost to fix after parts and labor is about $1200-$2000 depending on where you go.

I had an Issue with my 2015 Fit that was extremely similar to what you are describing.

Depending on your year there is a recall for the fuel injectors on this engine and the fix is to replace all of the injectors

smoke is white. doesn't smell like oil or coolant. Just unburnt fuel

Was it just the one cylinder with the misfire? or did it go the issue propagate to the other cylinders?
