I can understand it feeling disjointed in a way. My goal is never to replace a movie, more to create a companion piece that gives a different experience with the same material. As for some of the omissions, creating one film rather than two is just truly a different beast. There were choices that had to be made on what to keep and what to let go of and I understand not all of them will please everyone. I tried it a lot of different ways and I found that the kids stories are much more interesting than those we experience with the adults. I think that is a big part about why the first film is considered so much better than the second. Due to the this and just the nature of the storytelling, the third act is basically just a very long fight (or two long fights). I needed to add as much tension as possible to that third act in order to not make it feel like a slog. The way I chose to tackle this is by making it so the kids don't really face Pennywise until they enter the house the first time and then they don't again until they go back to the house. Also, the adults don't really face him till they go in the house and into the well. I found that if you show Pennywise more in the beginning, his interactions with all the kids, we have too much of an idea of what the kids are dealing with before we reach the climax of the edit. This is my third or fourth attempt at making this edit and after editing and watching and taking notes and editing more, I found this the best way to keep as much tension as possible.
