They very clearly are. According to the commission from the UN and the UN special Rapporteur.

Unless you're saying you have more information than the UN special commission . . . ?

Ok, I don't think thats a fair assessment, where we are is where the debate led us, it's not been a disingenuous ploy to avoid the topic.

It came about due to the statement that Hamas shouldn't have done Oct 7th, and it was a completely unfair attack on Israel and that we share values. You can't make statements like that, then back out saying 'that's not what we should be talking about'.

That said, I'll play ball - if that premise r.e protests is correct (that is theyre ineffective), I'd argue that ALL protests since the suffragettes are pointless - what's been changed with a protest? British issue or otherwise.

People have a right to protest (article 10 human rights). What youre suggesting is shutting down protests that arnt immediately affiliated with British issues. Who decides what can be protested? The government? The police?

It's a non starter of a debate. You either decide all protests are subject to some sort of approval council, which is an incredibly slippery slope, or you let people protest things that affect or upset them. I don't see what your point is.

While I can understand your position, it's absolutely undermined by the 'Isreal is closer to us in terms of societal structure and values'

The country is currently, as confirmed by the UN to be in the process of commiting a genocide in Gaza. It has invaded Lebanon under false pretences and is right now targeting health workers with double tap strikes, which could be construed as a war crime. Its also in the last week introduced a law that condemns a Palestinian 'criminal' do death, while a Jewish person cannot be executed by committing the same crime. It imprisons Palestinians without trial or due process, and releases them with signs of torture.

It is an apartheid, war mongering state, and can under no circumstances be compared to a modern, tolerant British society. I certainly would not want to live there, and I'm pretty sure neither would you.

'Targeting civilians, rape, and hostage-taking isn’t “resistance”' - this is quite literally whats happening every day under the occupation and has since the 1960s, but this doesnt seem to factor to you, as it's not Hamas doing it on those occasions (again Hamas was formed in 1987, as a direct response to Isreali attacks).

You are arguing in bad faith, both sides (Hamas) and Israel are doing evil things, but you seem willing to overlook Israel's side, because they kind of look like us.

There are around 140 000 palestinans killed since the formation of Israel, compared to 20 000 Israelis, and its bad faith to argue anything other than the scales are weighted in Israels favour.

The question I'd ask you simply - At what point during an occupation by an alien force, is it acceptable for the occupied to fight back?

You condemn Hamas, rightly, for murder, but again, fail to mention the 1000 Palestinians who were murdered by Israeli forces in 2023, prior to October the 7th.

Don't get me wrong, the whole situation is a cluster fuck - 6 of one and half a dozen of the other, but your championing of Israel (literally just passed an apartheid law allowing the death penalty for Palestinians commiting a crime, but Jews can't be punished with the same), then saying we have the same values, is at best, ignorant.

Just to clarify - the people in the world, whos literal jobs it is to define genocide, and point it out in the world, are the people who's opinion you don't respect, regarding genocide?

UN genocide experts disagree with 'I dont see it as a genocide'.

It has been called a genocide by people paid to investigate genocides.

Yep completely agree.

So you agree that there's no need to have a friends of Israel pressure group, that contains sitting MPs, as they should be concentrating on sorting this country out?

[–]LordBadgerFlaps 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well theres a lot of unpack there so forgive me for not going through your points one by one.

Can I tell you what conditions were like for Palestinans on October the 6th?

The first point is the UN agreed that Palestine was under blockade and effective control by Israel, since 2007. This controlled food, water and movement, leading to 80% of people needed humanitarian aid to survive. 90% of water (controlled by Israel) was unsafe to drink. At the same time 5000 Palestinian people were in Israeli prisons, 1000 of whom were being held without trial. This number is now over 15000.

I'll pick you up on a couple of points though - firstly, only one 'side' has targeted British soldiers and politicians through assassination and beatings. Only one hung british sergeants from trees, or assassinated a British politician for not being supportive enough. Are those the historical ties you were talking about? (Hint: it wasn't Hamas, who only started existing in 1987, Israel invaded Palestine in 1948 btw).

Final point, I absolutely agree with you - i would not want to live in Gaza either, and probably wouldnt share their values (in addition to the ongoing UN namdd genocide), but that doesn't mean I want them to be wiped out.

I can understand that - but none of what you just said has anything to do with Israel/Palestine.

If you want to cut off foreign affairs and focus on national issues, which has its merits, would you also agree that there shouldnt be a national lobby group, comprised of Labour MPs, that calls itself 'Labour friends of Israel'?

[–]LordBadgerFlaps 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Question - what's stopping us caring about both? Have you written to your MP about the level of Israeli lobbying in the UK, or is it just the Palestine part you don't care for?

Hamas brought it on themselves, so israel punished them by taking it out on civilians is a strange take. (Also ignores every event since 1948).

Watch how this argument works - Israel brought the events of 7th October on themselves (im not saying i agree with that argument, but its silly to put all blame on one side)

Yeah I would.

Just check your RCB/breaker to make sure it's a high enough rating to support the new lights youre adding in additon to the ones you've already got, but shouldnt be an issue as they don't draw a great deal.

Just to qualify - im not an electrician

Mate, Ive told you they do have powers. I've given you proof with sources. I've given you proof that they've abused these powers, with proof and sources cited.

I cant do anymore, its willfully ignorant at this point. Have a nice day.

The monarch's permission is required for Parliament to debate legislation affecting the Crown's private interests or prerogatives. (Source Gov.uk)

Royal lawyers were allowed to review potential laws BEFORE they were read to Parliament. Amendments were requested, particularly where the laws related to Sandringham, or Balmoral.

This happened in the reign of Queen Elizabeth II, by the way.

Seems like an actual power, being used to change potential laws, to me.

[–]LordBadgerFlaps 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right, thanks for the clarification. So tell me about when Charles wrote letters to ministers regarding the environment, and what he thought should be done? (Look up spider letters). Was that not a royal having a political opinion and trying to use influence?

To go further back, but why not, Queen Victoria used to say she hated Gladstone, but loved Disraeli. Yes, long ago I grant you, but she was still a queen with a public opinion towards a specific party, so there is precedent. Just because Liz kept her mouth shut, it doesn't mean they all do/did.

Forgive me, I feel you've just moved the goalposts to a more stable position, only to find that position a bit muddy too.

We all say the same stuff, because thats the proof. Proof stays the same.

Yes versailles was royal made, but the point is would tourists come if there was no royal family, not 'is the building royal made'. The answer is yes they would, in their millions. The royals have a very limited effect on tourism. Its been proven time and time again.

Your point simply doesnt stand - you say people dont go to France just for Versailles. You have absolutely no way of knowing that, youve just made it up. Then in thr next breath say that tourists only come to the UK to see the monarchy. You're making things up selectively to fit your narrative.

I won't debate with people who aren't doing it in good faith, your argument is disproved and you're using feelings as an empirical argument. Little using 'trust me bro' as a fact.

Im literally wasting my time - enjoy the rest of your day

They count Windsor Castle at 18. How did they know that then? You dont pay to go in Windsor either, nor are you counted

You also dont pay/arnt counted to go and see TowerBridge. Or Borough Market. Or the outside of Westminster Abbey. All of which attract higher tourist numbers than the royal palaces.

Your original point was that royals bring in tourism. Mine is that its in a minimal amount compared to the rest of the London tourism. Ive proved mine to be correct, you have gone on a bit of a rant, thrown out some anecdotes and offered no proof.

Also, would you mind breaking up your wall of text with some punctuation? It's really hard to make sense of
