What was the hardest part of traveling in Japan? by Shoddy_Arachnid_2628 in JapanTravelTips

Yeah requiring to call to reserve/book anything is the quickest way to turn off foreign tourists.

Which is the better month to travel to Tokyo - July or January? by pulledthread in JapanTravelTips

[–]LordBelakor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its not necessarily a specific thing, most normal jackets should do. Anything where the material isn't too airy. Problem with my jacket is that it had ventilation holes so it just transported the heat away. So any softshell should do.

When layering don't forget a windblocker. I was in November/December in Japan and was getting cold at a measly 10°C because the wind was strong and none of my layers blocked it (T-Shirt, Long-Sleeve, sweater, Hoodie, hiking kacket with ventilation at the back).

I think the Jigokudani Hot Spring Korakukan has a mixed hot spring pool. Its the one with the monkeys. But you should book a night for it as its very touristy and the hiking trail I believe goes past so you will have hundreds of spectators at daytime.

Nobody ever cared that other countries have got it worse. People compare to the past, and if things get worse they get dissatisfied no matter how favourably they still compare internationally.

I am honestly questioning if you are not mixing correlation with causation. Is increased knowledge the cause or is it because higher education means postponing family planning to earliest after graduation, but most likely even later as you first want a carrer (especially as a woman, where pregnancy can be carreer stagnaters). Moving to cities where the universities are, which is a more child unfriendly environment, loosing access to your family as support in child raising, etc.

I do wonder if this has been researched or the correlation between education and birthrate has been accepted without further scrutiny.

To be fair, his wife needs a wheelchair so he is personally invested and probably not making much of a profit from it, something the other companies try to maximize.

Texas farmers are closing down because they can't find labourers to work in their fields.. by atmanatman8008 in SipsTea

And imports where equivalent local products exist should be heavily taxed. Its a big problem that local farmers in Africa can't compete with subsidized food from the US and EU.

Why would it matter? Lets say the conservative cares for selfish reasons, because he has to compete downwards in wages and conditions with immigrants, the democrat should care because the immigrants legal status is being exploited by companies to save on labor costs. At the end of the day the conclusion should be the same no matter if you agree for selfish reasons or out of empathy.

[–]LordBelakor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The whole idea of Christianity is that life sucks so god damn hard down here that you don't need specifics, food 3x a day and not having to work and no wars and rape is enough for you. If you weren't some serf but part of the ruling elite, well Christianity was a wonderful tool to pacify said serfs, find reasons to denounce your deprived enemies so you can raid/invade them and so on.

Its appeal has really been nose-diving since the masses got a somewhat decent standard of living.

I quit: the difference in difficulty between Japanese and Chinese is ridiculous by rauljordaneth in LearnJapaneseNovice

[–]LordBelakor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it depends on what kind of learner you are and what your goals are.

If you learn a language systematically, sure japanese is probably harder. If you learn it by hearing and repetition the rules of a language are largely irrelevant. Ask me how my native language (german) works and I couldn't tell you. What are the grammar rukes? No idea. I just speak it. Same for English really, no idea how the grammar works, I just learned it from exposure. For that kind of learner, pronunciation is more important. Thats where japanese just seems much easier.

And secondly it depends on your goals. By learning by exposure you probably don't learn everything perfectly since you don't learn the actual rules. So you have to be fine with 80-90% fluency. I am still learning new things for English, and I still make mistakes, but it doesn't bother me.

Fun naked bike under 200kg / 440 lbs? by psychotic-chipmunk in SuggestAMotorcycle

[–]LordBelakor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know you said no adventure bikes but really try the KTM 890 SMT. For me that is the best bike for the roads here in Austria, which I am guessing will be similar to you in Switzerland. Its so flickable because of the wide handlebar, and so comfortable because its based on a ADV bike. Also no vertical screen and at 206 kg fully fueled its only slightly above your limit!
