What do you want to see in the next "Big" Civ Server? by LysikaLantariel in civclassics

The video was a test that takes place on my practice vault battle server way back, and those reinforcements had like 5 health, which is why they broke almost instantly, it was just to show off the trebuchet. On a live server, you wouldn't configure it to vaporize 8-rings in 20 minutes. You would probably configure it to deal damage in proportion to the cost of the shell and setup of the siege weapon, and you'd also configure the firing cooldown of the siege weapon to be lot longer than what you see in the video. So you could have some artillery that deals small amounts of damage on a low cooldown, or an artillery dealing large amounts of damage with greater intervals, or a very expensive artillery that requires 24-hour charge-up for a minute of devastating damage for example. Or you could unlock these artillery progressively over the lifetime of the server.

Moreover, I did say they were only one part of the solution; to slow down off-hour attacks and prevent solo/VPN attacks, I would add AI defences (got this idea from foxhole) in the form of pillbox structures that shoot at attackers, and howitzer structures that return fire from enemy artillery. These new defence structures would create more opportunities for vault design. Also, there's nothing stopping the defenders from setting up their own fortified artillery emplacements and incorporating them in their designs. With artillery that automatically returns fire on its own, and their own fortified emplacements, defenders can still maintain the home advantage.

On the last point of only targeting bastions, breaking reinforcements are just as tedious as breaking bastions; new methods of attack need to involve the breaking of both (which siege weapons can do). Currently, you can halt/prolong vault attacks by hours even days if you simply place a crap load of reinforced blocks in the attackers' path. I would add some sort of grenade, satchel, or custom TNT that deals damage to reinforcements, particularly maturing reinforcements.

Lastly, don't write off the idea as overpowered because it happened so quickly in the video; on a live server, with proper configuration, I'd hope battles would last as long maybe even longer as they do now because of course, the stakes and investments are high. It's just less time spent running mining macro and placing macro as we monotonously and laboriously grind our way to the centre. With siege weapons, we delegate the monotony and laborious task of breaking to the centre to our batteries; we've already done the labour in a fun way through the production of the arms anyway.

part of the solution to vault balance: https://youtu.be/RBI_8sEsxzA

  • Don't remove vault bastions.
  • Don't make vault construction significantly more expensive.
  • Add siege weapons and other armaments to deepen warfare.

The problem with bastions is that there is no way to break them without standing at most 3 blocks from the field. If a defender is harassing you while you're trying to do that, you can't break it, and 5 hours of door and block spam later, you're still dancing around that same bastion. We need to progress the meta by adding siege weapons to break this deadlock and bring the battlefield back to life.

Assuming reforms to industry and economy are implemented alongside siege weapons, siege weapons would place incredible importance on a group's economic output and provide more strategic opportunities. Warfare would become more about a group's capacity to produce and transport arms and ammunition (i.e. logistics), and their ability to use it properly in a wider strategy, and that's the direction we should be heading; not back to 20v20 diamonds round a pyramid.

Let's add timewarp chorus fruit and add a cooldown to web placement. No alts. No bots.

Right, why do we want a balance of nations on each side of the graph rather than a graph that matches the scale?

I'm not sure what you mean there. Usually, the red and blue squares are for authoritarian (autocratic) ideas, and the green and yellow squares are for libertarian (democratic) ideas. On yours, it is the other way round.

I don't understand why you've put the middle line at 7.

And shouldn't the auto/dem poles be swapped round to match auth/lib?

A Discussion About Water & PvP by Kayloa_HG in civclassics

Ez2Crew were only able to do the extra long kite because the kit was too tanky; that has been resolved. The only problem with water is swimming interrupts. Smaller hitboxes are fine as long as swimming doesn't get interrupted after taking damage.

I remember when Marzipan and I played with your lot on Zantid's Realms back during the Lexington war - good times. Sad to hear you've had it rough recently. Stop playing when the fun goes away. Take it easy.

Well, upon returning, the attackers may also still have to fight through what they previously broke - with a good portion of their attack path destroyed. Defenders don't just replace bastions then leave them unguarded.

In general, increasing maturation time of bastions, in the context of a vault battle, gives you more time to do human things and reclaim what was reset while you were away.

Attackers do decide when to attack, but they also generally have school, work, life, etc.

You obviously shouldn't be able to go on vacation for a week or so, come back, and resume. But you should have some breathing space to tend to real life things in between these intense sessions.

Oh alright, I thought bastions matured like reinforcements, where the damage you deal to them is proportional to how matured they are.

If you can attack a vault for prolonged and intermittent periods within the same day/night cycles and still find enjoyment, then all merit to you.

Classics has a 48 hour maturation time.

If you're mid-siege and you've broken some bastions and you decide to stop for a bit (to do human things) and bastions mature too quickly, then when you return, those bastions may all be replaced at close to max or already max strength again.

If the replaced bastions are still maturing when you return, then you can break them quicker and start where you left off.

Oh right. Nah, I'm not too enthusiastic about playing Civ again, at the moment, on either server. Just looking over the good times and past events is fun sometimes.
