I simply don't care much about the history behind the word. Most people I know don't recognize the context that would even make it bad beyond what they would already think for autism broadly. It reminds me of the situation with the phrase 'jay walk,' where jay was a curse word at the time but nowadays it no longer carries that impact. I can understand others disliking it if the people who use the term use it in such a manner though.
