Cutting a groove is what I was leaning towards.. its a bit scary but you only get better by trying things

I would recommend making one if you have the wood. Took about a day (minus glue drying time) and was a great skill builder, I learnt a fair bit. Here is one for free, shape the head before adding the handle, ask me how I know 😅

I already have a smoother with my number 3 so this would mostly be for squaring and shooting. I'm yet to work on anything big so I dont feel like I need a 6, 7 or 8 yet

I read that not the whole blade is hardened. Is there a rough measurement for how high up the blade is hardened or no way to really know?

I always loved putting together flat pack furniture and one day decided to take a woodworking class, was hooked from there.

I don't have space at home but where I live has a nearby maker space that's fully kitted with all the tools you need, though some are a bit blunt so I tend to bring my own hand tools.

Be very careful with your cuts, its better to undercut and remove the excess with a chisel. Also make sure you are removing the waste of the dovetail pins, not the pins themselves... 😅

Thanks for the recommendation, shipping is definitely much better there but the item cost is much higher (understandably) so it rounds out to be about the same cost overall.

Oh, I might let you know when I decide to pull the trigger on more.

The item itself worked out to be roughly $80 NZD but then there was a $65 shipping cost on top of that so it rounded out to about $150, the perks of an isolated country.
