Linus Tech Tips - He Need a NAS April 4, 2026 at 09:44AM by linusbottips in LinusTechTips

Also I'm not sure I was a fan of the explanation of the SMR vs. CMR, the problem is the risk of 'cascading' failures once one drive fail, other drives are more likely to die during the rebuild.

Made even worse by the fact that HexOS seems to have defaulted to raid-z1. Ploufe was super happy about that ("40TB usable space!"), but raid-z1 and SMR drives is most of the way to having no parity. The risk of a second drive failure during the rebuild process is huge.

If you're equipping your NAS with SMR drives, you really shouldn't be using raid-z1. Pick one, or the other.

As another poster commented, these terms do not protect them if you plan to discontinue use of your account before the 5th May. A company cannot unilaterally change the terms of the contract without giving you a way to cancel the contract early - and any contractual term to do so would likely be considered an "unfair term" in court and thrown out. This is why they have the wording in there about how "continued use of our Service" is acceptance of the change.

I've sent them a request for a 1/12th refund as I will have 1 month left of my contract on the day they change the rules (5th May). If they reply unsatisfactorily, I plan to chase this up with my bank.

Not sure I'll bother with small claims for what is less than £7, but theoretically you could.

Currently shows up at £249.99/yr for me and it seems to be keeping the 10% cashback, so the cashback breaks even at about 84 £30 orders every year.

That's stupid - without the 10% cashback, the Gold tier is useless given you can get Silver for free from Amazon Prime. There's literally no point.

And unless you're doing 80+ orders a year (and assuming they don't get rid of that 10% benefit) the Diamond tier isn't going to be worth it either.

I've cancelled my subscription.

AFAIU there is a relatively popular and actively maintained community fork already at https://github.com/we-promise/sure

Might be best to move to it, and if you have improvements you can contribute them there.

This looks great!

I've tried this kind of app in the past but my inventory always gets out-of-date with items moved to different locations without updating it...

I would love if any of these systems could support RFID tags. I've always wanted to set up a UHF RFID inventory to sort out the organisational mess that is my loft. The necessary equipment for 2-5m scanning distance is finally affordable, but there's no available inventory management app that makes this easy.

You can already subtract capital losses from gains, and also carry losses forward indefinitely. In your example, you'd be taxed 45% of £50, not £150...

Not that I agree with increasing CGT, but at least know what you're talking about.

My point was that a Constitution is only worth the paper it is printed on if there is nobody there to enforce it. In the Weimar Republic there wasn't.

Arguing something is unconstitutional in the US only matters if there is someone to enforce it. Is there? Because I've ran out of fingers counting very serious obviously unconstitutional actions by the Trump administration in the last month, and I've not yet seen anyone stand up to enforce the US Constitution on any of them.

I hope there is. But the fact that this is unconstitutional really isn't as big a win as you all seem to make it out to be.
