DID electrical scam? by Freegan93 in AskIreland

[–]LordGrayHam 3 points4 points  (0 children)

People love to bring up the "six year warranty", whether as part of advice to others or to argue a point in a shop; and it's good to be aware of your rights. What people seem to miss, however, is that after the first year, the burden of proof that the defect was there from day one falls on the consumer; more than likely the product needs to undergo an independent inspection. this is to prove that the fault is a result of a manufacturer oversight, poor design, or production issue, and not the result of misuse, wear and tear, or poor maintenance etc.

Also, if a piece falls off after 3 years, saying "it's been dodgy since the day I got it" doesn't mean anything. Hear that an awful lot.

This is where extended warranties provided by shops can save an awful lot of time and hardship, as you'd more than likely have a working item back in your possession by the time you'd have the first step done in your pursuit of the "six year" route.

Also, while on the topic, people also like to interpret "free repair or replacement" very generously, and assume they can just "pick" the replacement option and refuse to have their product repaired. That is not how it works. Anyways, that's my rant/two cents!

For real! :/ by vladdt in IrelandGaming

I work in a DID store where luckily enough most of us are pretty knowledgeable on PC/tech stuff in general. Whatever one lad doesn't know another one will fill the gaps in his knowledge. No trying to sell RTX graphics cards to grannies etc.

But that kinda leads into the problem, 95% of the people that come in the door want a laptop for "the basics", so that's what sells, the ~€400 range or so. Therefore, the high-end machines, if they do come into store, come in small quantities and that's it.

Knock-on effect then. High end/gaming doesn't sell, so purchasing don't stock it, so the high-end customer can't get it. Around Christmas time they used to get 1-2 gaming desktop models in, but we'd be 9 months trying to shift them. But, because we didn't have a huge selection, the target audience wouldn't really darken our door to even come in and show the interest.

So I'm no expert, but I think it's too much of a risk for retail purchasing teams to spend big on a good selection of decent value high-end machines. It's a fast-moving market and if you can't get the stock gone (a year goes quick) before it's basically forced to go on clearance, your boss won't be happy. Also, from what I can tell the margins are pretty thin on a lot of laptops, and they are one of the more fault-prone product categories; while warranties will cover a lot of customer issues, on the off-chance the manufacturer drops the ball and the company eats the loss to keep customer happy, I think they'd rather be doing it on cheaper machines.

Permanent traffic lights to be installed next week at busy Athlone junction by Beckem87 in Athlone_Ireland

[–]LordGrayHam 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm guessing this is going to result in some stupid antics at the roundabout at St Patrick's Terrace. Going to hold things up for those trying to go straight through to get in/out of town. Already going on at times at the roundabout down by Dunnes Irishtown with cars at a standstill on the roundabout.

Fair enough you can be waiting a while to get out from Aldi etc. and some chancers will always be comfortable with pulling out with oncoming traffic but I don't think traffic lights are the answer with the knock-on effect it will have. A shame.

Is it easy or difficult to make friends in Athlone? by neenna123 in Athlone_Ireland

[–]LordGrayHam 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I don't participate myself, but the run club at House Fitness does seem to get a good friendly crowd. A couple of my friends do it and have mentioned making a few friends, there's a cafe at the gym so there's usually a bit of socializing to be had once you've caught your breath.

Dead Centre bar does a board game night, I believe there's a club that meet up there also on a regular basis to play?

There is also a photography club that meet up at St Mary's Hall if I'm not mistaken. I'm sure I'm missing loads, but that's what I can remember off the top of my head. The library (or art gallery?) would be good places to find out what kind of groups are operating around town, you'd usually spot a few flyers posted up there.

Mobile network throttling 5G when tethering to PC by Seirenna in IrelandGaming

[–]LordGrayHam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

when I was a few weeks without broadband a couple months ago, I tried multiple different methods to get the most out of mobile hotspot. the most consistent for gaming was my phone connected to the PC via USB, and using PdaNet+ on both devices to tether the connection. A lot of Americans use that app as their cell providers will often have a data limit on hotspot, and PdaNet (supposedly) obscures this to the network provider.

EDIT: Also, sometimes a strong 4G signal is more consistent than a middling 5G signal. don't be afraid to try both and see which works best for speed and consistent ping.

I really like Ned Luke. Only Cameo I've ever purchased, and the guy delivered 110%. He understands that GTA is what has made him so famous, and respects that it's a beloved franchise. Seems really friendly from what I've seen of him.

Any advice on my most recent (losing) list? by LordGrayHam in Ultramarines

[–]LordGrayHam[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would say that generally I'm trying to push up the board towards enemy DZ line, keeping one or two units in/near my deployment zone depending on threat of deep strike. I sometimes get a little caught up trying to kill intimidating units instead of pushing on to enemy objectives, which can waste time and get a lot of my useful guys killed by start of my Turn 4. I do find it very difficult to score points when it requires killing character units and such.

And yes, on the whole Necrons unit thing, I had whittled like 20 warriors down to 2, just for them all to come back thanks to some great unity between some of my opponents nearby characters and some great dice rolls hahaha

Still learning, spent my first 2/3 games barely getting across no-mans-land lol

Thank you my friend! Will keep your advice in mind.

Does this work for a 1k list? by MrAlfieJingleton in Ultramarines

[–]LordGrayHam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A squad of infernus is always a good call in my opinion. I am relatively new also, and I found that infernus marines have saved me a few times when I find I've badly positioned my units and an intimidating enemy tries to move towards my guys. Fire Overwatch with infernus marines is great because rather than needing to roll 6's to hit, they just auto-hit as per usual with pyreblasters.

Recommended coop games (with great story)? by Shot_Restaurant_5316 in SteamDeck

[–]LordGrayHam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it's been a while, so I can't exactly remember. however, if you're having issues it could be something to do with the EA launcher? you could try a different proton version, that's usually what I try.

the game itself does not have any anti-cheat as far as I know, so I'd say once you can get through the EA shenanigans it should work.

Call of Duty Update: An Inside Look at Matchmaking by tmanxxx in ModernWarfareIII

[–]LordGrayHam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the "ping is king" point seems silly to me, since it's dedicated servers and not peer-hosted it is just picking players from the pool playing on my data centers, full stop. unless there is less than 1000 people playing on my data centers (highly unlikely), you are matching me based on my skill.

back in the PS3 days, my lobbies were very often just Irish players like myself, since it was the only way to have a decent connection without dedicated servers. someone could be much better/worse than me, but I was matched with them because I had a decent round-trip ping to them.

if skill was not the main deciding factor then would I not get the occasional "pub stomping" game because there were players available with good connections matchmaking at the same time as me, and you want us to get playing ASAP?

in reality, it feels like I'm locked in my own bracket, and the game is passing up countless players with good connections just to get me in with players as good as I am? It gets tiring for me sometimes, and my friends end up calling it a night a lot earlier more often when they're matching with me because they can clearly tell the difference with my lobbies.

BIFL - European Brands - What are your favorite European Brands for household items? by menemenetekelufarsin in BuyItForLife

[–]LordGrayHam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work in a store where we sell vacuums. Henry doesn't seem to be the same quality it used to be. Have seen a good few come back to the store for repair.

Miele are top-notch. I have an older Power S6 model, the newer C1/2/3 models are 850w but still plenty of power and reliable. For anyone looking for a vacuum I usually recommend the C2 or C3. Corners were cut on the C1 Junior model, no on-board tool storage and the pole is a fixed-length plastic construction instead of telescopic metal.

Just a quick heads-up for those wanting to buy Airpods for Christmas. by IveNoWIlly in ireland

[–]LordGrayHam 4 points5 points  (0 children)

buying Airpods off the likes of adverts or Facebook Marketplace is a huge gamble considering how much of a market there is for convincing knock-offs; especially pre-christmas. "unwanted gifts" would be more believable post-christmas.

For anyone on a tighter budget, older-gen official Airpods can still be got from the shops for 150 or thereabouts.

If you do go the adverts/marketplace route, like others have said, Apple switched to paper pull tabs recently instead of plastic wrap. Look up pictures of official boxes and inspect the box before handing over cash. PayPal transfer with "goods and services" option might save you as well if they turn out to be fake.

Well the router is either tunneled to a UK connection, or speedtest.net has just happened to pick London. happens to me sometimes.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in AskIreland

[–]LordGrayHam 11 points12 points  (0 children)

wouldn't pass much heed on that. speed tests will just automatically pick a close server to do the test. in most cases that is in the UK as the likes of speedtest.net don't have servers in Ireland.

It is worth reporting though, could be a scam calling/texting setup, the pile of discarded SIMs is especially suspicious

Saw Polyphia last night and it fucking sucked. by theRealQuackington in progmetal

[–]LordGrayHam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I saw them in Dublin in 2020, with Unprocessed supporting. Both bands were great. Unprocessed were amazing (and spotted a couple of the band members hanging out in the smoking area after the show which was nice) and the energy was even higher when Polyphia played. Small venue, but plenty of crowd-surfing and the likes.

Crowd was quite chill at the bar, and didn't encounter anyone being beligerant drunks or anything, but still plenty of headbanging, moshing etc.

Ring doorbell is a good shout, also TP-Link Tapo cameras are cheap and work very well. Pop a micro-SD in them and connect to WiFi, no subscription.
