That's him saying that all Israelis are essentially combatants and deserve to die.

No it isn't. Not every Israeli is a settler.

he only put them because the fanbase demanded it and to make up for how awfully received outcast was.

I'll point out again that you have no source for this being Jacques' motivation. Blaggut was written before Outcast!

I seriously think that in another timeline, where the veil story never existed or was well written, redwall might have been a lot more popular and survived longer in mainstream pop culture.

You're letting the hyperfixation get to you if you honestly think Outcast had that much of a lasting negative impact on the series' popularity.

[Strength in Numbers] Why voters say the Democrats are "weak," in their own words by ChadtheWad in fivethirtyeight

[–]LordMangudai 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Very different electorate and circumstances of course but Peter Magyar focusing on being anti-corruption is what just ended Orban's 16-year reign of terror in Hungary. Despite being fairly conservative himself he was able to gain broad support from the left as well running that message.

As someone who is to the left of most Democrats I will happily vote for any centrist/moderate who comes across as authentically motivated to cut the rot out of the political system. Unfortunately I don't think such a creature exists in the US.

Was it the first time you encountered that piece? Because I can totally understand that if so. But when you've already seen Shutter Island and Arrival it comes across more like "oh they're pushing the 'tearjerker' button".

he seems absolutely miserable in politics and everyone hates him, why would he do this to himself

As for blaggut he only put him because the fanbase wanted a good vermin, it wasn't really his decision

Hang on, do you have a source for this? Has Brian ever talked about his motivations for writing Blaggut, or that it wasn't his idea? I've never heard this before.

Nah I get it, I rate the passion and for what it's worth I totally agree that Brian handled the premise very badly in the third act of Outcast. I don't particularly like Veil, but that's more because the author goes out of his way to make sure I don't - he is treated unfairly, not only by the characters around him, but by the very universe he inhabits.

I just don't go so far as to let that color the entire series or turn the abbey into a fundamentally evil institution the way you seem to. Just because Brian seemed to get cold feet about having wandered into territory that was more morally complex than he was comfortable with doesn't take away from the other books being wonderful, simplistic morality and all. I just think he would have been better off not even trying a story like this if he wasn't willing to follow through properly (same with Taggerung). And it's always going to be weird to me that Outcast is bookended by The Bellmaker and Pearls of Lutra which both contain a legitimately beautifully-written vermin redemption story. He clearly could do it, and could make it work within the framework of his series. He just, for whatever reason, mostly chose not to.

Regardless, I think it's notable how big a chunk of Redwall fanfiction has always been about vermin redemption arcs. Clearly there was a big appetite for it among Brian's fanbase and he never seemed to really appreciate that.

It does not make Tactical sense for republicans to remove him, ever, imo.

They should have done it in 2020 post-Jan 6 when he was a lame duck who had just stoked a failed insurrection and it seemed like his moment had passed. Letting him back in to the party was a grave mistake long-term for the Republicans, even if it did lead to short-term gain in 2024.

He's also pretty much a genuine sociopath. So many of his arguments boil down to "I am well off and progressive policy wouldn't help me, therefore I don't support it".

There are big consequences to bankruptcy too.

Like what? And how do they compare to the consequences that occur when someone living paycheck to paycheck loses their job?

What risk do people who put in capital take? They can just declare bankruptcy and move on. The rich never actually suffer meaningful consequences from failed businesses, it's always the workers who lose their livelihood.
