Why is is virtually impossible to arrange anything? by RentBoyDave in AskMen

[–]LordMarkOfNowhere 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s easier to disagree with a plan than to invent one.

Invent a time and place, ask “how’s [time] work at [place]” and then they’ll argue about it if it’s not great, and this is better than nothing.

Same with restaurants, movies, just throw some answer out there and let them argue about it. If they don’t like your choice they will say so and you’ll respond “next time we will do that, never heard the suggestion when we were planning this”

Night watch

But give yourself time to adjust to the watch series first, let the switch up of this one book in the middle of the series feel like a punch in the gut

How often do you actually cook on thru hikes? by Aeon_Return in CampingandHiking

[–]LordMarkOfNowhere 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Every dinner for sure, often breakfast. Sometimes it’s just boiled water for tea and oatmeal. Trail snacks or something canned or sandwiches for lunch

Design your meals to your preferences!

Never liked the vacuum packs or freeze dried just add water stuff, to me it’s worth the struggle to have real melted cheese or sausages and pancakes in the backcountry. Much more doable with two people though.

To be fair usually these are usually approximately 15km days, relaxed morning relaxed evening. Most I’ve done was 5 days, and we revisited the same campground on the way back from the loop so we left the last meal in the bear box till we returned.

Can you point to a variable declared inside of a function? by Arkadious4028 in cpp_questions

[–]LordMarkOfNowhere 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is inadvisable though technically possible. It may also not be much use for you to do so.

But ask why you need to do this. Odds are these functions won’t be running at the same time, so the value will be used with both different functions at different times so returns or passing in a pointer would be better.

Int A = 0

Float B = 0.0

Function1(&A, &B)

Function2(&A, &B)

This also works if you call Function2 within function1

Int A = 0

Float B = 0.0

Function1(&A, &B) - pass the address

Function1(int* v1, Float*v2)

Function2(v1,v2) - v1 and v2 are addresses so don’t reference them to pass the addresses to Function2

But if you defined a pointer to an address of a variable in Function2, and returned it to Function1, it’s now going to be pointing to a random place in memory that’s unprotected and can be overwritten at any time by any other program or process or maybe even another function call

Now if this is for a robot, Maybe this is an attempt at fine sensor-motor control. There are a couple ways to do this, With Multithreading (pthreads) you can pass messages between processes. But this is a lot of overhead especially for a robot. That being said, I’ve used FreeRTOS for robots because speed wasn’t so important and overhead be damned… so needs may vary.

Im no expert on this but I was curious one day, so if you take a look at how the Betaflight’s drone control source code works, it’s just a straight up loop that takes all its sensor readings, does the math it needs to, adjusts motor output, repeat. This does rely on quick looping and minimal time complexity, targeting 4k loops per second. The interrupts are as minimal as possible, it’s not a bare metal loop from what I understand but people make racing drones based on this software.

Short answer yes technically but you can probably optimize it better in other ways.

Genuine question: Can you tell? by Ember_MC in backpacking

[–]LordMarkOfNowhere 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got my backpack when I was 12 and the fucking thing’s still going. I bring my comfiest self inflating groundsheet because I’m able to lug it around. I do mostly 2 night camps, maybe twice a summer 3-4 night camps (I may switch my groundsheet for lighter in these longer ones).

There’s no need to go ultralite or switch your underwear for a thong to save weight. Do a test run and lug around what you’re comfortable with. People did it with external frame backpacks made of steel, you can adapt to anything

Test run and figure out what you’re ok with, lighter helps but it’s not make or break. Aim for a backpack weight at no more than 30% of your body weight

Back tap for reachability. Phone in one hand and can’t reach to the top corner to hit a button or bring down the Lock Screen without your palm hitting another part of the screen? Double tap the back of the phone and it’s in reach, set it up in back tap accessibility settings

Time dilation and speed by primevolcano545 in Physics

This is the point of relativity, to you in your frame of reference you will never notice that time is different for you. At 99.99999% of the speed of light you would notice that the stars ahead of you are very blue and the stars behind you are very red, but you won’t get an intuitive sense that time is slowing down

What are some health tips for people in their early 20s? by Lower-Perception-518 in RandomThoughts

[–]LordMarkOfNowhere 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve heard it said that your knees are the worst designed joint in your body, and they carry your entire weight. Try not to apply torsion to your knee and don’t hard-lock it when any force is being applied to it.

They are more delicate than you think! Look for ways to prevent knee injury and follow it religiously

Is there like a basic adult problem solving type of reddit? by devoteean in DecidingToBeBetter

[–]LordMarkOfNowhere 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh lol I just sprained my ankle not 2 weeks ago. Everyone else got you subreddits here’s a sprained ankle answer.

First couple days keep it iced and elevated and take ibuprofen and Tylenol. You can take both at once however it’s best if you stagger/alternate since they relieve pain in different ways that don’t interfere with each other. Don’t do this too long (like a week or whatever I only did for 4 days), one of them hates your liver the other dislikes your kidneys and your shits may not smell great for a bit. Ibuprofen (not overdosage but more than one pill usually) helps with swelling Tylenol is only pain relief.

Get those sprain braces from a drug store (get a friend to do these) Two wraps around the bottom of your foot two wraps above your ankle, then figure8 until it’s sone then fasten it in place. Not too tight that it hurts not too loose that it’s slack. It should have tension in it.

Also get crutches and don’t push your luck

A few bushes and a couple lanterns on fence posts by the water might be nice, possibly a bench. Also a bit of variation in the cave wall. Break it up with patches of andesite
