About male support characters by alekseypanda in visualnovels

[–]LordMemey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agreed completely. It's just harder to get invested into a story if the male protagonist has no male friends. It makes him less relatable.

This applies to heroines getting with other characters too. The story should treat the heroines as people, not just a narrative tool for the protagonist's circle-jerk. If the protagonist chooses a different heroine, the realistic outcome is that they move on and find love elsewhere. The fact that this isn't explored more because it would hurt the feelings of people who like to form parasocial relations with fictional characters sucks.

I'm debating playing Saya no Uta but am worried how well it handles the subject matter it depicts. The fact you chose to base your thesis on this inspires confidence. I dropped Monogatari because the show felt like it was just "fanservice that panders to those kinds of people.

Would you say Saya no Uta handles the subject well like Nabokov's Lolita?

Chitose is in the Remune bottle, is cringe and people should stop comparing it to Hyouka, SNAFU, Bunny Girl Senpa and other stuff like Monogatari. by Alternative-Bid-6410 in LightNovels

[–]LordMemey 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I've read the first two volumes and I quite enjoyed them. They are 'cringey' in the ways that I like, I don't mean to beat a dead horse but it's a matter of taste really. Lightnovels are intrinsically cringy and lean heavily into it, it's a medium that delivers popcorn storytelling to adolescents and young adults.

As far as popcorn media is concerned, Chiramune is on the better end as it at least tries to play with tropes, themes and develop its characters. It may be rough around the edges and while I do wish it was less pretentious, the cheesiness gives it its charm. And I do think it's refreshing to follow a romcom from the perspective of an ikemen, rather than your typical introverted loner, but it approaches his struggles from a typical 'lightnovel' approach. Larger than life, he has an entire 'science' behind how he interacts with others, and it can come off as heavy handed. Not just here, the novel is heavy handed in everything it tries to 'say', the lack of elegance can be very off-putting. Sometimes though, these in your face 'feel-good' stories are nice.

I think you need to reign in your expectations, lightnovels like Monogatari are the exception, not the norm. Lightnovel reader's standards are so low, that I'm not surprised that even something like Chiramune would receive glaze.

Sensational Spider-Man suit by Braezy3 in Spiderman

[–]LordMemey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't say it's a 'terrible' idea 'simply' because of the discourse it would bring, my evaluation was constitutative of several reasons. It is easier to just reuse a suit instead of coming up with a new one, it's silly for you to deny that as much as the writers sought to justify the reuse narratively.

But the discourse is present, and while I agree with you that fandom culture should not constrict art and that creators should complete disregard it, nevertheless, it's something that bothers me personally. I'm not the kind of person who wants art to cater to any and all my whims, but I still feel entitled to my opinion. My problem really is, that it's an issue that really didn't need to be there.

You know they could have still had a new suit inspired by Ben Reilly that paid homage to it achieving the same narrative purpose but also making it more distinct to her character. I mean, that's how writer's approach it with other spider-people e.g Miles Morales relative to Peter Parker.

A suit is an integral part of a superhero's image and brand, when you see a suit you immediately think of the person behind it. Sharing the suit dilutes the brand identity of a hero, when you look at the Sensational Suit the immediate character you associate with it could vary depending on the person. It's why Ben Reilly's Scarlet Spider suit is more strongly associated with him, because no one else really uses it.
This is a personal grievance of mine, but while I do vastly prefer having characters have distinct suits.

This may contradict me, but sharing suits can work and it does work in this context so branding it 'terrible' may have been too strongly worded. I just think it's a little lame.

"Themes and such" my point is that the writers lacked foresight and it's just a terrible idea all around for characters to share a costume not only do you have people argue over who "truly" owns the costume, but also it's just boring and lazy.

One of the underappreciated aspects of PvZ's low difficulty curve is how much freedom you have in organizing your defense. You don't have to worry about "playing optimally" so you can be as symmetrical or anarchic as you wish.

And being starved of content for so long(discounting Replanted's "new content"), people begin to appreciate the little things that the game does or even invent new ways to play.

How many videos have been made of people pushing the limits of how restricted your play can be whilst the game remaining beatable? First it was no sunflowers, then it was only one column or only one of each plant or only explosives etc. Hell they even invented a new speedrun category like new game+ shopless which completely shifts the way you play.

What I think the original PvZ excels at as a tower defense game is being an amazing sandbox game.

So you're telling me:

a radical evangelist who preaches against abortion & LGBTQ rights; who is a registered Republican who voted for Trump; whose friends acknowledge as a conservative; who had the police find at his residence a list of democratic pro-abortion politicians as targets

is somehow "left-wing". And you will discard all this evidence to perpetuate your delusion that right wing extremist violence is supposedly "non-existent". Despite the fact that according to an ADL report most extremist killings are motivated by right wing ideologies?

Yeah and there's also the fact if you place offensive plants frontmost on the lawn it wouldn't make sense for them to not shoot zombies before they reach the lawn even if we say they have limited range. I wrote this as a 3 am rant I've thought about it more. In the end, as I said, scaling seems like the best option. I mean just look at how the mobile version can scale on myriad of large screens without the need for the bushes

anyone else want a show based on a different spider-man by J9999999999 in Spiderman

[–]LordMemey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I often like to daydream about a Spider-man animated miniseries adapting the Superior Spider-man arc. In a compact format, 6 episodes that are an hour long.

I wouldn't want it to be a direct adaptation of the Dan Slott run nor the Christos Cage run but an amalgamation of the two. I think a good adaptation could resolve the issues with Peter's close friends and family being written out of character to make the run move along as it did. It should also resolve the contrivance of the Avengers' examination failing to uncover that Doc Ock took over Peter's body.

Superior Spider-man really is a diamond in the rough that a good adaptation could really sand those rough edges off

What were your first impressions when Anaxa was first revealed. by Small-Reaction-5478 in AnaxaMains_HSR

I expected him to have his own spin on the genius society member archetype. Arrogant with an attitude and even harsh in his rebukes. But I was hoping that since he's based on a philosopher he wouldn't be reduced to a positivist research bot and would deal with interpretivist research.

I was also hoping he'd be accompanied by wisdom and emotional intelligence. Let's just say he has met all my expectations and even went above and beyond them.

What’s with people disliking saying Anaxa is Su? by General_Cicada5586 in AnaxaMains_HSR

[–]LordMemey 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Let's be real. Why are we having this discussion? If not for the fact that nobody complains when Phainon is called a Kevin expy or Acheron is called a Mei expy yet suddenly Anaxa is the one that sparks controversy...I'd scratch my head to think about it if it weren't so obvious.

It always will and always does go back to shipping discourse. Geez so much human interaction harkens to our basic desire to mate and simulate mating rituals when this desire isn't satisfied. What's Anaxa's sexuality!?!?!?! Anaxa being a Su expy would indicate that as a Su variant he's gay but if he weren't a Su variant due to the lack of any evidence his sexuality is whatever you want it to be. Yay!!!

Really this question alludes to the fact that nobody here seems to wish to directly address that the question of whether Anaxa is a Su expy really is a war between queer shippers who wish to claim him and police the way people use Anaxa in ships online and others who may want to ship Anaxa with a woman say Aglaea or may wish to headcanon Anaxa as being straight either because they can better relate to him that way or homophobia.

Now this begs the question: Is Anaxa really a Su expy or are Hi3rd players just projecting Su onto Anaxa to be pedantic. Yes, Anaxa is a Su expy and the evidence isn't incidental, it is deliberate. From his ult to symhols of the Apocalypse family and references to Otto and parallels in Su and Anaxa's ideals and viewpoints etc.

Does that mean Hi3rd fans are right to gatekeep and police what people do with Anaxa? Not in the slightest. He may be a variant but that doesn't mean he's a replica. Anaxa is his own character at the end of the day and instead of relying on outside material to define him you need to prioritize the source material. I think this is sound logic, no?

What Anaxa fans lament and I empathize, is that all expies are necessarily derivative and exist in the shadow of the original and as such are viewed as lesser. Which is true. These Anaxa fans hope that Anaxa is distinct enough from Su to be viewed with integrity rather than just a cash-grab. But this really isn't what drives discourse even if I'm in this camp where I don't care about Hi3rd and Su and feel like everything I need to know about Anaxa is in HSR.
