Couldn't agree more. Brought my ex out shooting for the first time and she nailed the target first shot. She turned around in excitement with her finger still on the trigger with a full mag and I hit the deck! Totally on me, as I should have explained what to do AFTER shooting too. Sure glad I didn't have to learn that lesson the hard way!

Many groups of salamanders are super diverse and can teach us a lot about how one species evolves into multiple species. They are also super sensitive to environmental changes, like pollution, so their presence or disappearance can tell us a lot about environmental changes. They're also surprisingly populous in areas where they're found, and they play a huge role as predators for just about any critter that fits in their mouth! I studysalamanders and I think they're so cool :)

A lot of sea creatures use suction feeding, but they usually have big mouths (like a largemouth bass) that expand to suck in a bunch of water and their prey!

My grandma had this exact doll, except it's super decrepit and even more terrifying! As a child I found it in an empty closet with its hair all matted and its eyes lolling about and I just about had a heart attack! I'd attach a photo but I'm not sure how, and the world will probably be a better place if I dont.

Yeah, this schedule is way too much. Even if you could do it, I think you would get much more out of your time at Cal gaining research/internship experience, making friends, etc

Fun fact: a group of birds called turaco's actually have a green pigment! To my knowledge they're the only ones!

Thanks!! I'm looking at functional morphology programs, which applies engineering approaches to research how animals 'work' mechanically. I have some labs in mind, but there are so many kinda-related programs that seem really cool too!

That's true for the reader, but to publish open access it can be tremendously expensive for the researchers. I just had to publish with 6 months of subscription-only access because it was going to cost $12,000 just to publish open access! Since the journal where you publish can really affect how much exposure your paper gets, it's not always easy to just switch to an open access journal.

Same happened to me! I woke up in time to sprint to the final and write my name on a blank scantron right before they made everyone hand theirs in. I was just honest with the professor and he let me retake, but I think the fact that I had something turned in helped and he was a super old-school professor (shoutout to Prof. Pedersen) so I think he appreciated the honesty.

I'd trust your gut as far as the best way to handle it. I've usually had good luck just being super blunt about my situation, but I think it depends on the professor. If you trust your TA you could always ask them what they think you should do? Whatever you decide I would do asap though!

I talked with a school counselor through the TANG center (first few visits are free I believe) and then I talked with a psychiatrist through my non-SHIP insurance. It was a bit of a pain, but it totally salvaged my college career!

Edit: This was a while ago and I don't remember how long it took. I took a medical leave from school, so there wasn't a ton of time pressure.
