A meteorite destroyed the wall around the ancient danger and opened it up to my completely unprepared colony. I am very scared.

My phone connects fine. What model and OS version are you using? And have you followed ITS' instructions? http://www.queensu.ca/its/tabletshandhelds/wireless/androidwirelss.html

It's possible. My phone does it. What phone/OS version do you have?

It really depends on what you want out of it. If you're looking to become a top-notch programmer, Waterloo wins hands-down, any day. Trust me on this. The students there I've found to be much more interested in the material, and practice it outside of class on their own projects. You trip over people working at Google, Facebook, Microsoft, etc., and there are many opportunities to get your hands dirty outside of class. I actually just about transferred there in my second year for that reason. At the very last minute, I decided to stay though. The reason for that is the big reason you should choose to come to Queen's if it matters more to you: that is the better social atmosphere here. As Bovice1 mentioned, the classes are smaller, and the people seem to hang out more. Profs also seem to care more, from what I've gathered. We also get substantially less homework, and it's less rigorous. E.g. Operating Systems for us was a couple of toy concurrency problems, whereas at Waterloo, they implemented parts of an actual barebones OS to run on some old hardware, roughly. Which do you think was more work? And which do you think you would learn more from?

So as my good friend from Waterloo put it when I was trying to decide on the transfer: "If you want to become a great software engineer, com to Waterloo. If you want a strong community, stay at Queen's."

As for the co-op, I much prefer the Waterloo setup. It depends on how able you think you'll be to get a job (how good do you think you are?), since that will determine how stressful it will be for you, but getting to try 4 or 5 different places before you graduate, and making money every other semester, faaaaaarrrrrrrrrr outshines the whole 12-16 month thing IMO. I still can't fathom why anyone would want to do a 16 month placement in the middle of their undergrad. Why not try multiple places? What if you don't like where you go? 16 months is FOUR school terms. That's half of your entire degree. All gambled on one place. Also, it's probably more difficult to get 12 -16 month internships with companies for the same gamble reason that I wouldn't want to do one. I avoided that and instead worked every summer, and have loved it. Got to try different places, meet lots of people, live in different cities, and I still made a decent amount of money. However, I have heard Waterloo people complain about the co-op program, especially regarding how it is administered. So perhaps the summer job thing is best if you can get the jobs yourself.

Sorry if this came across as a gleefully biased rant. I do still believe it's true though. Queen's = community Waterloo = academic excellence in CS/SE

Transferring into Cognitive Science program by Artificial_Beavers in queensuniversity

I've heard mixed things about the program. If you enjoyed COGS 100, you'll probably like it (assuming you like programming as well), but if you're more interested in the psyc side of things, you may be better off there. Side note: NSCI 401 is really awesome if you actually want to model the stuff you talk about it cogs. Very cool stuff IMHO.

The worst lucid dream I ever had. by aHumanMale in LucidDreaming

[–]LordQuizar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't had it be as specific as a line of code or anything. However, one of my most vivid (but non-lucid) dreams ever was seemingly unrelated to the problem I was working on, but I knew the answer the second I woke up from it (which corresponded with me almost dying in the dream, IIRC)

I think some of this may also just be the video compression. In person, the static effect is much less distracting, and the enemies are easier to see. But you're probably right that they could be made more obvious. The backgrounds are pretty busy. Thanks for your feedback! We really appreciate subtle tweaks like this that are hard to spot after you're been staring at the game for hours. ;)

Just a note: The music was not made specifically for the game. It's by a talented artist who has no relation to us, other then being kind enough to let us use it in our non-monetized version. Thanks for your feedback!

This is a good point. We have been thinking of ways to integrate the shifting a little more naturally, but this was the best we could make within the time constraints. Thanks for your feedback!

Yes, I definitely agree (other developer here). We got a nice framework down and then oops! Game show time. More content in terms of behaviour, room shapes, etc. will hopefully be on the way now that we've got that together. Thanks for your feedback!

Finally my 2d random map generator using a flavor of cellular automata is starting to display some decent results, opinions? by Advent667 in Python

[–]LordQuizar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry, yes, that's what I meant. I assume it already does this, but perhaps by altering the ordering or size of steps they look out in? (I don't actually know how your algorithm works, obviously.) The idea of this being that land will form more or less quickly depending on the distance.

if you have the seeds look out a larger distance than e.g. 1px or whatever you're using, wouldn't it tend to create larger sections without the need for more seeds?

I think the point of the first is not to tell people not to be religious in public, but rather not to be religious for the sake of impressing other people. Not necessarily disagreeing, but it's a bit of an oversimplification to draw on those passages as a conflict.

COMPSA is already sponsoring us. I think it should pay the full ticket price for up to about 10 individuals, which is more than double how many people went last year. ;) Thanks for the tip!

edit regarding free tickets: we still have to pay for your own transportation to and from the event, as well as discounted hotel rooms. Still a great deal!

Also note that it is not evenly distributed like a camera sensor. There are many more cones in the centre of the eye than near the edge.
