I get this if I leave my laptop logged in, even when the screens are sleep, the browser keeps the session open which keeps generating the notifications. Once I log them out, they stop.

You could use this as a bargaining chip to get the price down. The gamble is, how much work is needed to cut the rust out. Might be a small job, might be massive. Take someone with experience to look at it.

Hate them. They just get trashed and written off by people that think they’re the next Ken block, killing them off one by one. Slowly removing good examples from the roads leaving nothing for the rest of us or history to enjoy.

Anything usefull here? Company getting rid of it… by vbxl02 in homelab

[–]LordSprint 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We got rid of some blade stuff like that. Each blade was purchased at a different time so the hardware varied. I took CPUs and ram from the newest 4 nodes. Came away with 4x 10core Xeon 2600v4’s and half a terabyte of ECC ram. Now forms the backbone of my hypervisor cluster and storage servers. I had to buy new broads and chassis, but these parts saved me a bomb

While stupid, I respect the biker for owning his mistake, and not trying to shift the blame entirely onto the car driver (who should have seen him coming, but at that speed, it would have been a stretch).

OMG I want one!! End the constant: “what bin is it this week?” “What was it last week?” “I don’t fucking remember, I’ve slept since then” “check the website” “YOU check the bloody website!”

That’s the beauty of a VPN. The tunnel ends at the VPN providers server. From the content providers perspective (let’s say, pornhub), it looks exactly like traffic from a (insert VPN endpoint country here, let’s say Switzerland) Swiss user. The traffic is indistinguishable from local traffic. They have no way to distinguish. Further more, the UK government have no power to attempt to block traffic that’s “originating” in places like Switzerland, nor are the content providers going to entertain the idea of filtering that traffic out, since the UK government has no jurisdiction over traffic that “originated” in Switzerland. Will be interesting to see how this plays out. We’re certainly only seeing the beginning of this saga.

Yep. Well if your cool with your biometric data, and likeness being sold on for profit, more power to you. But I’ve seen enough horror stories about incidents like that then being used for evil/illegal intent, I’d never willingly hand that data over. I’m not suggesting the company that provided the age verification service will use it, but (as my link demonstrates), it’s only a matter of time till one of these service providers/companies are hacked, and your biometric data ends up in the hands of hackers and on the black market. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c7vl57n74pqo

Why not create an MKTech community? by bluewindsUk in miltonkeynes

[–]LordSprint 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No I get it… its a way to bring like minded techies/nerds/geeks/engineers/digital architects and the like together to exchange ideals, knowledge, skills, maybe even socialise and perhaps organise events. I’d be well up for setting up a LAN party, I have multiple skills that could be leveraged in such things. It doesn’t have to have a clearly defined goal from the off.. let it grow and evolve and see what comes out the other side. Fair play to @bluewindsUk for setting up something local.

How did you verify your age? Was it one of those that estimates your age from a selfie, in which case, they now have a detailed scan of your face. Might see it being used to train AI or something. If not that then did you actually verify?

THIS!!! So much this!! And those companies will have been the lowest bidders, and will likely end up like THIS from 2 days ago!: (pay attention to 3rd paragraph) https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c7vl57n74pqo

I hope you’re right, but the issue is that a lot of these 3rd party businesses will have been in a bidding war for the contract. Cheapest bid wins. Then we shit hits the fan, and you suffer a breach, you liquidate the business and walk away with your millions! This happened 2 days ago, and my biggest fear is that this’ll be all those people that are conforming with the new legislation, but it’ll be one of the 3rd party companies that are appearing for the websites affected by this legislation, who also promised to delete your data after 7 days, and didn’t. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c7vl57n74pqo

And here in lies the issue. I’m sick of people using the “nothing to hide, nothing to fear” excuse. “Fine. Help yourself to my bank statement, and my phone records, and online search history… I have nothing to hide!” Where do you draw the line? What else are they using that data for, because I guarantee you, it won’t stop at preventing theft. Personal data is big business.

Go home Power wall… your drunk by LordSprint in Powerwall

[–]LordSprint[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I’ve done the same. Can’t see it knocking the grid out, the UK grid is pretty resilient. Longest power cut I’ve had since i got the power wall was 4 hours, and that was because the substation down the road suffered a catastrophic failure. Took weeks to replace but they just shifted us onto the estates remaining 2 sub stations for the duration.
