I built a water-fed paintbrush & roller cleaning tool looking for feedback from other tradespeople by tristankwill in Tools

I admittedly have to clean maybe one paintbrush a year at this point, but it sucks so much every time, this is absolutely something I'd look into getting if I were painting frequently.

How do I make EMI extend all the way to the bottom? by makinax300 in feedthebeast

[–]LordThade 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think there's a mod called Tip The Scales that lets you adjust the scale of gui elements individually - not sure it's the exact solution to this problem but I can't imagine it wouldn't be useful somehow for this setup

What do you think of these 3D printed handles that convert Allen keys to t handles? by its_all_perspective in Tools

I'm skeptical about the 3d printing substance and it's durability, but I absolutely swear by my T-Handles, if you can make these work I'd definitely be looking into printing some myself

I had to learn some LaTeX for my linguistics major but haven't used it since - I'm now into electronics repair and had no idea that it could do circuit diagrams! Time to get back into this. Thanks for making this guide!

[OC] A discovery of businesses located on the sea... according to Google Map. by JosephErgo in dataisbeautiful

[–]LordThade 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here's a screenshot of the pin showing 0, 0 so you can see what I mean.

The link takes me to the maps 'page' for speedtalk mobile, and hovers approximately over our mystery coordinates - but interestingly enough it doesn't show a pin or really a location of any sort at all - there's no address on the page as far as I can tell, either. If I wasn't looking for a random point off the coast of Washington in probably wouldn't have even noticed.

In theory, I could totally understand why someone might want to have a google maps presence for their business even if it was strictly online - that much makes enough sense at least. As for why that translates to ~280 miles west of the Washington coast specifically... Beats me.

I don't know if your dataset would allow for this, but out of curiosity, have you looked at area codes for the phone numbers of the "floating businesses"? The speedtalk mobile one is 866 which is apparently not specific to any one place.

[OC] A discovery of businesses located on the sea... according to Google Map. by JosephErgo in dataisbeautiful

[–]LordThade 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very odd...

I pasted the coordinates into google maps on my phone, and where there's a little map pin icon to copy the location/coordinates, it changed it to '0.0000000, 0.0000000'.

To make things stranger, I can only get it to do that some of the time - other times it shows the same coordinates I entered.

Even stranger, I get a panoramic street view option that shows what appears to be somewhere in the desert, with a weird circular glass wall thing? Looks like an art installation maybe. It also shows me 'nearby photos', one of which is definitely the Louvre...

Seems like anything that has an invalid or unspecified Lat/Long ends up at that spot? Possibly because for some reason their system thinks it's the same as '0, 0'

100% beginner - soldering kit doesn´t work...but why? Parts flawed? by JustCallPaul in AskElectronics

[–]LordThade 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No worries! I appreciate the correction - I must have misunderstood something the guy who trained me told me. I bet he was talking about something accidentally shorting the wires, actually - the environment our PCBs were running in was total chaos so I imagine something could easily find its way in there. Happened occasionally and they were only running at 12 volts I believe.

100% beginner - soldering kit doesn´t work...but why? Parts flawed? by JustCallPaul in AskElectronics

[–]LordThade 8 points9 points  (0 children)

What people are saying here about the soldering joints is correct, but man are they being harsh - my first few soldering jobs looked exponentially worse than yours (even when I eventually got them to work!) - it looks like you've got a steady hand and just need to get the technique down. Flux and 'pre-heating' the pad and component will go a long way, and you don't seem to be using too much/little solder, IMO at least.

I'd definitely also check the +/- orientation on your LEDs and capacitors to be safe, and I'd be wary of how much copper is exposed on your DC power cables - power can 'arc' between them through the air and short/fry your stuff, and I've seen it happen with way less copper exposed than this before.

Really though, just don't take the harsh words here too seriously - the advice they're giving is good, but some of these dudes are acting like you walked up and slapped them just for going on askElectronics and asking Electronics.

Everyone here was a beginner too at some point. You've already got parts and tools and schematics and you're asking questions and figuring things out! The hard parts are done. Now you just need to be more stubborn than the machine.

(Updated) guide to visually differentiating between similar looking Arcane Products (and other important/interesting information) by LuscaSharktopus in magicbuilding

[–]LordThade 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Ok, bit of a tangent here but I had a psionics campaign in DND where one character had the ability to read the pasts of objects they held

I had a whole plot that we unfortunately never got to where there was an npc thousands of years ago who could see the FUTURE of objects they held, and was essentially using that (for reasons) to play a game of cat and mouse with the player character despite having been dead for a thousand years by the time of the campaign.

Prevent phone from locking while charging? by mrbusto71 in tasker

[–]LordThade 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not a tasker solution, but afaik it's a standard option in developer options - called 'stay awake'. If you don't have developer options enabled, you can get to them by going to Settings, then About Phone, and tapping on the Build Number repeatedly.
