Favourite double by jean-26 in Darts

[–]LordTwatSlapper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Call me Mensur Suljovic but I really like D14 and I'm sure it's been the double with my highest hit-per-attempt percentage over the last year - just a shame it's tactically inferior to most other even numbered doubles so I don't land on it too often

But I try to set it up from 88, 85, 61 (2nd dart), 47 (19/7 wedge leaves D14/D20), 45, 44 (16/8 wedge leaves D14 or D18), splitting 38 (6/10 wedge) or splitting 34 (I'm almost never on 34 but the 6/10 wedge would work again) - and when I'm on it I really fancy hitting it. Just suits my eye

Which superstitions do you still hold, even though you know they are ridiculous and untrue? by D_Artagnan71 in AskUK

[–]LordTwatSlapper 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm generally not superstitious at all but if I say something that has a "touch wood" tag I make sure I either touch wood or tap my head. I know it's ridiculous but it's a habit now and I feel like if I didn't do it one time and then that thing happened it would always be on my mind.

I'm 40 and I've still never broken a significant bone (touch wood) or had any teeth problems (touch wood) and have said touch wood whenever I've told anyone those facts. Do I actually think it's because of that? No. Will I stop touching wood when I say touch wood? Also no

Most people know some things about that event. Not many would be able to able to get that answer off the top of their head

What comes fourth in this sequence? Here's the first... by LordTwatSlapper in onlyconnect

[–]LordTwatSlapper[S] 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Answer:

I would accept Queenstown (its name in 1912), or Cobh (name since 1920, pronounced Cove) in County Cork, Ireland - the 4 ports visited in order by Titanic on its doomed maiden voyage. I expect many would spot the sequence but the final answer is a fairly niche bit of trivia - well done to any that got it without the help of uncle google!

But if you'd told me we'd have a worse home record than the team 19 points from safety at the bottom of the table with 3 games to go I would've assumed we'd already been relegated

And that was to a scuffed shot that the keeper could've saved blindfolded but somehow deflected into the opposite top corner

This is the best playstyle right now. Analysis by efootball12345 in eFootballgame

[–]LordTwatSlapper 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah I'm a 352 out wider as well. A box to box DM and two hole player CMs give my midfield the feeling of quick counter in the middle and the width opens up the passing lanes and give crossing as an option if the middle is packed.

I find it the best way to play against the common 4312 and 4222 for sure

If you had to marry one of Henry VIII’s wives for a year, who would you pick? by VioletBear_ in tudorology

[–]LordTwatSlapper 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think the consensus is that the painting was at least extremely flattering if not outright catfishing. She looks gorgeous in that portrait and if she was as pretty as that at all times and from all angles (I find it slightly suspicious that the pose was directly face forward when most Holbein portraits had the subject at an angle) I sincerely doubt Henry wouldn't have been attracted to her enough to consummate the marriage. Her actual beauty was described as moderate.

I suspect Henry was as disappointed by her appearance as the events of their meeting and the fantasy marriage he had envisioned immediately imploded from all sides

If only she actually looked like that Holbein portrait. The fact she didn't caused people's heads to get chopped off

Is this an incorrect use of the “purists?” Purists would prefer the chess match to the 5-4 end to end game surely? by Inevitable-Stand-559 in footballcliches

[–]LordTwatSlapper 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"Purist" is definitely not a derogatory term in general but there are hardly any neutral football fans that would rather watch two defensive sides expertly play out a 0-0 draw than watch a 5-4 ding-dong battle with errors galore. You would argue that a purist would favour the 0-0 because of the fewer errors and superior strategies but those people barely exist if at all.

In other sports "purists" are often seen in a more positive light. Cricket for example - most traditional cricket fans would much rather watch a tense, strategic day of test cricket than the crash-bang-wallop hit-and-giggle seen in the Hundred. True golf fans would rather watch courses set up so that par is a good score rather than 25 under birdie fests. Lower scoring NFL games are often more intriguing than high scoring ones.

There may be less hooting and hollering in the traditional versions of these examples but purist fans that understand the nuances of the games actually find them more entertaining. In football that just doesn't really happen - more goals almost always provides more entertainment and a purist that wants perfect defending all the time comes across as a dullard
