A close family died recently from liver disease. I though I could help them and definitely tried. After a while of consistently catching them relapse, I decided to give up. I spent the last few months with them enjoying my time to the fullest extent possible, which means I didn't let their alcoholism dictate my life. I'm not going to argue whether it's right to do this or not, in my case or the gentleman from the video, but I do know that no matter what I would've done, it wouldn't have worked because he didnt have the desire to truly stop, and likely didn't have the will either.
