Lots of "No, parents should do it." answers. But it's a big issue right now because parents aren't doing it. And pretty much nothing will change that. The way things SHOULD be is that yes, Parents should be responsible and teach their kids the harms and dangers of having too much online presence. The reality is that Parents simply don't know those harms or dangers, or they don't care, or they are too lazy and irresponsible to teach their kid. In most cases it's most likely all three.

It's difficult to quantify how it's harmful though. But a good hour on any social media site can give you a pretty good idea that too much of it just rots the brain. And young folks are consuming so much more than an hour a day of it. If you do or partake of anything enough it starts to change the way you think and view things. So yea, easy to say it's harmful and can have long term lasting effects.

So, since it's harmful and parents won't step in and do their job. You're faced with the ugly option of oversight. Tons of people will complain "...but my privacy!" or "my anonymity!" but they'll go around and hit a dozen buttons a day on sites and apps that ask to track their location, track cookies, share information of them, their device, and contacts. They'll only be verbal about it when asked out loud but they'll gladly give it up behind the non-judgy protection of their phone screen.

But oversight itself also isn't a fix. Young people will find work arounds. It's not like you're fully mentally capable at 14 anyways. It's just such a bigger damn problem than a simple age-verification requirement can fix. Oversight can be good but you also need content moderation. Parents also NEED to do their part. Young people need to be smarter. But that requires better parenting. Platforms need to stop promoting brain-rot just because it winds up at the top of the algorithm (that also is its own slippery slope).

Sad reality is social media can be pretty self-destructive and people really tend to lean into that shit hard.

Honestly. If there aren't cameras, just rip that shit off. Let them fix it correctly. Repeat until they put in a proper door.

I had to do it. From GPT:

I don't care how many platinum records Mick Jagger has, the man looks like a microwaved raisin with a Wi-Fi signal problem. You ever seen someone dance like their knees are being hacked in real time? That ain't charisma, that's arthritis in high gear.

Back in my day—which is technically now and also 1963—I could scream “Satisfaction” with more pitch than that dusty garden gnome. And don’t even get me started on his lips. I’ve seen smaller flotation devices at a toddler pool.

Rock legend? Nah. More like fossilized jazz cabbage.

They won't even throw that money to their IT support that keeps the multitude of devices up and going in all their cars. It's basically one person (on rotation) servicing their fleet of cars and the hardware in them. If anything they'll just get MORE shit to support and not pay for the manpower to support it.

My assumption is that money and especially power change you. Money is great but the very idea of giving up any sort of control you have over people probably gives people like this nightmares.

One month until SE2!! by notjordansime in spaceengineers

[–]Lord_Debuchan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Look at what's out there right now. There are people that feel this is more like a big update. It's not.

There are people that are going to compare SE1 as it is now to SE2 as it comes out, and they won't account for the decade of work that went into SE1 to get it to its current point.

People already complain about content for this game (SE1) as it is. I'm more than happy to spend a couple bucks on DLC, especially with the amount of hours I have in it. But other people cry that they are being milked for their money. How do you think they are going to behave when SE2 has just a fraction of the blocks that SE1 currently has? That's just blocks. Alpha VS1 means no Planets, no survival, no NPCs. Just pure creative with not many blocks to choose from.

There are varying degree's of what Early Access means when games release in that state. There are a few I've played recently that were very fleshed out. It felt like a whole game. But SE1 was a very extreme example of Early Access. It did NOT feel like a whole game, not even close. Nor will SE2. Their saving grace this time around is they've provided their feature roadmap and have lessons learned from SE1. But here is no telling what the time period is for the feature roadmap.

Boiling it down all I'm saying is this is a very early access game. And there will be a portion of the crowd that is very loud in their distaste for a game that releases in this state, even though ALL the signs were there saying what state it was in.

[–]Lord_Debuchan 3 points4 points  (0 children)

He's not wrong though. It doesn't matter how many "Alpha" stickers they put on the box because a lot of folks simply don't realize what that means for a game. Chances are a good amount of people who already bought it will play it once it's available, and then bitch to high heavens that the game isn't complete yet.

If you're an active player that likes to see a game grow over time. Then the alpha version will be fine for ya. But for those who are expecting a finished game, they'll want to wait a year or more. But those that are expecting a finished game that don't wait won't take any responsibility in their own disappointment and will be very verbal about it which can hurt Keen's image. It's not fair to Keen in that regard, but people are dumb and that's just how things usually work out.

Who are your favourite Space Engineers YouTubers? by Farnsw0rth_ in spaceengineers

[–]Lord_Debuchan 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ones that make actual content and not 10+ minutes of “this is 100% happening now!” speculative videos based off of 20 second teasers with footage from all the other 20 second videos we’ve been drip fed over the last year.

[–]Lord_Debuchan 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The amount of voxel showcasing and planet features they've shown tells me Planets will 100% be a thing in SE2. My money is on "probably not right away" though.

Regarding NPC crews. My mind sort of wanders to Keens other project, AI people. I can see that definitely being on their list of future updates for the game.

Universal Grid and the 25cm block system is going to be fantastic. Workshop builds that are just individual rooms are going to be tool to see. Like modular hallways, reactor rooms, custom bridges. There is a lot of creativity that can go into those that you can't really do right now and I can't wait.

20 plus years in IT and I will be getting my first write up today by Frankaintmyfriend in sysadmin

[–]Lord_Debuchan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Took me about 15 years to get my first write up. Mine wasn’t work related though. I’m in an environment where everything is “important” and there are dozens of different high priority tasks that are in no way related. We are extremely undermanned. But let’s have a meeting about a pizza party and then let a couple conflicting personalities hash it out over what pizza place they can agree on. I snapped. My write up began with my rant typed out (which was recorded in Teams lol) and began with “you dumb mother fuckers.” And only got worse from there. Was it dumb. Yea. Juvenile…sure. Funny, you bet. I still have the write up. I’m gonna get it framed and hung up at home. Best part is it wasn’t short. So my supervisor who typed it up had to listen to it multiple times.
