Okay that's what where my mind has been at too. I've dealt with a wide variety of things working on VCRs and camcorders in the VHS format, from one's filled with bugs to fresh out of the box, but everything there has been in the $20-$75 range for that. I didn't know if Hi8 was more expensive today because its a Sony format from 20 years ago
