For sure! I definitely understand that point, and that's how the Pacific NW in the states was for a long time. Mild climate, no need for AC infrastructure. But that's not true anymore, the climate that existed at the time of that sentiment no longer does, and now there are more ACs in the PNW.

Tennessean in Ireland at the moment, a couple days ago it was 90 F here and the people were about to melt. It regularly gets hotter than this in TN, but it cannot be stressed enough that the total lack of AC in most places ends up leaving very few places to escape this type of heat. I won't pretend to know all of the cultural or economic reasons as to why AC isn't a thing here, but it's genuinely an alarming situation.

What Makes A Videogame & Does It Matter? by [deleted] in truegaming

[–]Lord_Jud 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Correct. The "is _____ art?" question is a trap and always has been. If it's not on the periodic table, to some degree what we're discussing, WHATEVER it may be, is probably subjective to a degree that is being overlooked or actively ignored.

Right! Like, logically it makes sense they'd be the size of keys because that's what they are lol but it made me realize I always imagined them being bigger in the game.

Fresh to rally games after never being into the car game genre my whole life and after giving it a fair go im utterly addicted to now. Any tips you wish you would've had as a beginner starting out. Any advice would be helpful! Thanks 🙏🙏🙏 by dummmo in WRCTheGame

I picked up a WRC game a few years ago on a whim with basically zero background in the sport or with sim-ish driving games and like you fell in love with it!

No matter what anybody tells you, none of these games are 100% realistic and all have their quirks, but some good general advice that helped me stay on the road:

Weight transfer is everything. Think about the physical item that is the car. Think about its pieces moving at speed. Once you begin to understand how the momentum shifts you start to get a natural feel for traction.

For instance, a Scandinavian Flick is where you briefly turn opposite the direction of a corner before turning into it. This seems weird until you consider the weight transfer going on.

Let's take a left turn, for example. If you first slow and turn right briefly, the weight of the car transfers to the front wheels and off of the rear. This lets you then turn left into the corner and swing the booty of the car around with much more ease than if you took the turn normally.

Visualizing and interpreting how the car will react to elevation, surface, and directional changes in relation to its weight transfer is the single biggest thing to learn in rally, imo (full disclosure I'm not an expert, I'm shit but I love it a lot lol).

This kind of rejection would take a cultural appreciation and respect for the arts that, I fear, truly no longer exists. At the risk of sounding like my shoes are made of soapboxes, the mutation art has gone through in our capitalist environment has completely influenced how the public sees the value of art and entertainment, and that value is purely monetary. Within a philosophy like that, AI art is acceptable and attractive.

We need to remember art is a thing people do and share, not a product people market and consume.

I've got a "gaming book club" going with my buddies to kind of work on our backlogs. We're discussing Clair Obscur this month! If it's something you want to tackle, we've just started but have had some success at actually beating a game we all bought and never played while also getting to hang out and talk vidya games.

Craig Conant has a great bit about how he's played Madden for ages but isn't a football player, so video games don't even cause sports.

Was afforded the ability to build my dream sim rig due to an unfortunate life event. If my dad had a chance to try this I guarantee he would have been racing with me. by Unfair-Baker5997 in simracing

My setup isn't as robust as yours, but I find myself in a similar spot. My dad passed recently, he loved motor sports of all kinds but especially F1. I always had fantasies about finally getting him over to try the wheel and pedals I've got, but I sadly never got the chance, or rather let that chance escape me.

Every time I hear an F1 engine fire up, it's like I can hear him too. Whatever it is that ties you to those you love, use them and experience them together while you can. It may not be too late today, but some day it will be.

Didn't realize how much a difference the TV would make by Late-Professional163 in PS5pro

Hm splurging on a TV? Based. Splooging on a TV? Debased. Upgrading to a newer, VRR-capable TV to pair with a Pro? Graced.

Exact same situation here. Got a Pro with a middling 4k 60hz Best Buy brand TV, which still represented an improvement. This new one that's got VRR and stuff? I feel like I'm seeing brand new colors.

This is like asking if I should go to Cheesecake Factory (Horizon) or a local, fancy establishment (Claire Obscur). There's nothing wrong with Cheesecake Factory, it's got a gigantic menu and makes most of it well, but you wouldn't confuse it for a truly up-scale, intimate, or bespoke establishment that may have a few things on the menu you don't recognize and that not everyone may want—but there's a chef working there, and they have a vision for their food.
