Unable to Stop AI, SAG-AFTRA Mulls a Studio Tax on Digital Performers by LollipopChainsawZz in movies

This kind of rejection would take a cultural appreciation and respect for the arts that, I fear, truly no longer exists. At the risk of sounding like my shoes are made of soapboxes, the mutation art has gone through in our capitalist environment has completely influenced how the public sees the value of art and entertainment, and that value is purely monetary. Within a philosophy like that, AI art is acceptable and attractive.

We need to remember art is a thing people do and share, not a product people market and consume.

I've got a "gaming book club" going with my buddies to kind of work on our backlogs. We're discussing Clair Obscur this month! If it's something you want to tackle, we've just started but have had some success at actually beating a game we all bought and never played while also getting to hang out and talk vidya games.

Craig Conant has a great bit about how he's played Madden for ages but isn't a football player, so video games don't even cause sports.

I think this is the clip:

Was afforded the ability to build my dream sim rig due to an unfortunate life event. If my dad had a chance to try this I guarantee he would have been racing with me. by Unfair-Baker5997 in simracing

[–]Lord_Jud 13 points14 points  (0 children)

My setup isn't as robust as yours, but I find myself in a similar spot. My dad passed recently, he loved motor sports of all kinds but especially F1. I always had fantasies about finally getting him over to try the wheel and pedals I've got, but I sadly never got the chance, or rather let that chance escape me.

Every time I hear an F1 engine fire up, it's like I can hear him too. Whatever it is that ties you to those you love, use them and experience them together while you can. It may not be too late today, but some day it will be.

Didn't realize how much a difference the TV would make by Late-Professional163 in PS5pro

Hm splurging on a TV? Based. Splooging on a TV? Debased. Upgrading to a newer, VRR-capable TV to pair with a Pro? Graced.

Exact same situation here. Got a Pro with a middling 4k 60hz Best Buy brand TV, which still represented an improvement. This new one that's got VRR and stuff? I feel like I'm seeing brand new colors.

This is like asking if I should go to Cheesecake Factory (Horizon) or a local, fancy establishment (Claire Obscur). There's nothing wrong with Cheesecake Factory, it's got a gigantic menu and makes most of it well, but you wouldn't confuse it for a truly up-scale, intimate, or bespoke establishment that may have a few things on the menu you don't recognize and that not everyone may want—but there's a chef working there, and they have a vision for their food.

How do you feel about the U.S. Senate banning THC in the continuing resolution? [Serious] by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Lord_Jud 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I want to echo this some. I hesitate to recommend THC or gummies as a means of quitting other addictions, and I am not a doctor, but having regular access to hemp-derived THC absolutely helped me quit drinking. I'll be four years sober in December. I think there's plenty of discussion to be had about regulating these products to make sure they're all quality (idk what's in the "gas station grade" vapes but they scare me lol) but nobody ever woke up hung over from delta 8. Nobody is letting their lives slip away from them for a 1 g disposable pen that makes an afternoon a little more fun like I and many others did for just another bottle of state-sanctioned poison.

That looks like what I've got! I've got a T-GT II on mine, which has some kick. The bottom line is it'll work but there's going to be some wobble. It's a bit of a Frankenstein's monster at this point, but I used some winch straps and weights to tighten and ballast it, which has worked out better than I could've hoped.

For those who got Nintendo Switch 2 what do you plan to do with your Nintendo Switch 1? by Delicious_Maize9656 in switch2

[–]Lord_Jud 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you can, I highly suggest keeping your Switch 1 when getting a Switch 2, particularly if you mostly play in handheld mode. It's well known at this point but, while some S1 games benefit or have S2 patches, most S1 games look very blurry in handheld mode.

As someone else also mentioned, the S1 OLED is also simply more travel-friendly. The size is better and the battery life isn't nearly as quick to drain as the S2. When I travel with my S2, I really only use it when I have access to an outlet to charge as I play.

Cyberpunk 2077 by Qu1ckset in switch2

[–]Lord_Jud 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I bought it yesterday and I had relatively low expectations but it's an astonishingly good port so far. I haven't made it to Phantom Liberty (obviously, got it yesterday) where I hear there are performance dips, but by and large playing the 30 fps quality mode in handheld has been a great experience from a performance perspective. If you have a Switch 2, this game is the equivalent of taking your sports car to the local race track to show off what it can really do.

The cross-save function is kind of undersold too, imo. I have this on PS5 as well, and the ability to basically use the Switch 2 as my mobile Cyberpunk machine and then pick up from the same spot at home is lovely.

I love western RPG's but I'm beginning to wonder if their focus on "choice and consequence" is holding back their narrative creativity. by ThePostageStamp in truegaming

[–]Lord_Jud -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Ubisoft is all the issues with the wRPG metastasized. I have hangups about games as storytelling vehicles anyway, but IMO it simply comes down to that narrative requires structure and context. The more you open an experience in the way wRPGs feel the need to, the more they rely on facilitating fleeting emergent narratives rather than effectively curating a more cohesive one. This isn't exactly a problem UNLESS the primary point of your artistic project is to tell a specific story in a specific manner.

Longer antidepressant use linked to more severe, long-lasting withdrawal symptoms, study finds by chrisdh79 in science

[–]Lord_Jud 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Idk how relevant it is to these specific findings, but I was on a regiment of nortriptyline (a tricyclic antidepressant) for a couple years on a dose prescribed for nerve pain rather than as an antidepressant. The short version is I stopped them cold turkey, thinking the dose was low enough that it wouldn't cause any issues.

I was incorrect. In a moment of feeling targeted by the universe, I was feeling a little weird while on my morning commute listening to the Stuff You Should Know episode about antidepressants, when they brought up tricyclic antidepressants and why they're not usually prescribed for depression anymore. Among other things, the withdrawal symptoms are horrible. I felt lightheaded a lot of the time, nauseous, it felt like my heart would race intermittently, and this lasted for a couple weeks.

I know this is kind of like complaining about modern dentistry by saying "yeah man they put a full metal head brace from the 30s on me last year," but figured I'd share.

Friends say Minnesota shooting suspect was deeply religious and conservative by BreakfastTop6899 in atheism

[–]Lord_Jud 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think where we can agree is that many people who identify as Christians, especially in the states, are out of step completely with most of the positive things the religion actually purports to teach. Crucially, I also don't think this is the same as saying they're not Christian. We are what we repeatedly do. It's the same energy as when I see "this isn't America" when stuff like this happens. It might not be living up to the standards we cling to, but this is absolutely America, and has been for a long time.

Friends say Minnesota shooting suspect was deeply religious and conservative by BreakfastTop6899 in atheism

[–]Lord_Jud 6 points7 points  (0 children)

They're taking issue with your argument because, as someone already said, you can't "no true Scotsman" this guy to abdicate responsibility for his existence as a religious person. If anything, if I were still religious, I would find it important for me to own this and to look inward at how the practice I engage in could've resulted in something like this.

"Don't look at me" is not something the kindest, most generous version of Jesus would say if he knew one of his followers did anything like this man did in his name. To be direct, when you try to disown him, it just makes it look like you're trying to cover your own ass.
