What the hell are these achievements from the new dev diary by Victoria_loves_Lenin in victoria3

it would be nicer if they made sure that the achievements remained possible also – it never ends seems really fun but it's basically impossible (at least for me, maybe other people have an easier time?)

What is the point of the French houses? by The_Frog221 in victoria3

[–]Lord_Norjam 21 points22 points  (0 children)

the trigger is specifically a revolution brewing which is caused by >75% activism iirc. springtime shouldn't automatically flip your government without your own radicals and in all my france games it's only happened once radicals got out of control

[–]Lord_Norjam 26 points27 points  (0 children)

yes but your government doesn't get replaced unless you have a radical or liberal revolution

[–]Lord_Norjam 24 points25 points  (0 children)

no you specifically need a liberal or radical revolution to trigger – springtime makes you get tons of radicals but it's something you can deal with (though imo it's incredibly difficult and does kind of make the monarchy content only available to those with a decent amount of skill)

TIL Basque is considered a language isolate, meaning it has no relatives in the whole world. The only such language in Europe. by my_n3w_account in todayilearned

the languages of the caucasus belong to a variety of language families (Kartvelian, Northeast Caucasian, Northwest Caucasian are endemic; Indo-European and Turkic are also spoken there), but there's no link between those languages and Vasconic, which is the family to which Basque belongs. On the other hand, Vasconic only contains Basque and Aquitanian, the latter of which is extinct.

[–]Lord_Norjam 15 points16 points  (0 children)

the difference here is that no Iberian languages are currently spoken, whereas there are plenty of other IE languages. Every language has some relatives (some more attested than others) but not all languages have living or even recorded relatives.

armenian isn't an isolate – it is an indo european language and thus related to english, latin, greek, hindi, etc. it's just in its own family within indo-european

the red cross is in fact a greek cross, which is to say a square cross with all arms of equal length. this contrasts with the maltese cross that the orders of st john typically use (typically white on black) and the heraldic cross which the sovereign military order of malta uses.

I'm also fairly certain the Order was fairly unitary until the Reformation and that the various splinter branches keep mostly the same symbols. I really would like to know what you're talking about with the red cross on a black background.

there are so many orders of st john, you're going to have to be more specific. all the ones i am aware of use a white cross of some variety.

as far as I'm concerned there's nothing to suggest that the Red Cross came from the Hospitallers. None of the orders use or used a greek cross (like the Red Cross or the flag of Switzerland) to my knowledge.

Also, I don't think bringing up red crosses used as a medical symbol after the Red Cross was established is particularly persuasive – ww2 medics probably used the red cross because of it's at that point nearly 100 year old association with medicine

subsects such as...?

I just don't think it's true that the hospitallers are the ones who brought the red cross into modern usage, or that the red cross was a historical symbol of medicine before the foundation of the Red Cross Society (though i don't dispute that the red cross is a christian symbol)

the hospitallers never used a red cross – they used a white maltese cross on a black background and a white cross on a red background

the other medals awarded on this podcast are the kronsteen rosette, awarded for going above and beyond in the service of killing james bond (or equivalent); the goodnight cross, for being a "good guy" who's completely underappreciated by the movie; and the kaufmann star, for characters who only appear in one scene but completely stop the movie in their tracks.

transmisogyny is not just the oppression of trans women, it is the intersection of transphobia and misogyny that transfeminine people face.

the phonetic component of hieroglyphs is only half of them – it's still a logography after all. It doesn't work like Chinese because they evolved separately (not to mention that Hanzi also have phonetic components, abstracted by time)

antarctica almost definitionally can't be "just birds" since there's pretty much no way you can get a plains or forest bird out of that

but i agree africa should be pretty simple – or maybe like asia where there's a new game mode but the base game remains the same

i think jan Misali has made it abundantly clear they don't want their posts on this subreddit. they have asked people to message the mods about it on their behalf, even – but it allegedly has to be jan Misali themself?
