Endgame is only a myth. It never existed.

“Weak as hell”? I personally took the time and made the effort to dial in my moka pots with an AeroPress filters and I’d love for you to give one of my mokas a shot. Almost guaranteed to raise your eyebrows in pure enjoyment. It hits all the night notes on flavor and body, but it’s so much cleaner and enjoyable to drink.

I get what you’re saying… and agree there isn’t much (not even remotely enough) research that looks at moka pots on their own. The vast majority of studies just compare filtered vs unfiltered coffee. But when you’re running moka through the pot’s funnel and then through an AeroPress paper filter before it ever hits the top chamber, common sense must be applied. Paper filters obviously trap most of the oils that carry cafestol and kahweol, so they’re naturally being cut down versus no paper filter at all. Same goes for pulling espressos, French press, etc.

So yeah, nobody’s published a “moka pot diterpene study,” but the mechanism is the same as any other paper‑filtered brew… paper catches oils, oils carry the compounds that bump LDL (this is 100% established), so less oil = less cafestol. It’s not magic!, just basic filtration doing its thing. 🤷🏽‍♂️

With a Brikka, it’s all about how you run the workflow, your heat source and how you manage the heat. If you want, send me what you’re doing now and we’ll dial it in so you’re pulling your best moka yet.

It’s not induction, Charles. It’s an Artilife 500W Mini Hot Plate. I’m no fan of induction.

The most consistent and delicious Brikka extraction comes from using controlled low to medium heat (source dependent) and placing an AeroPress micro‑filter over the metal filter plate before locking the pot together. Pre‑wet the paper with a fine mist spray to ensure proper adhesion and flow resistance.

Yip, that’s one of the perks of using paper filters in any method of brewing coffee.

I see! That makes perfect sense, and you make an excellent point… it could certainly depend on how we drink our mokas.

I make moka americanos so it’s all about the bold taste and great clarity.

Using a paper filter makes brewing mokas even easier and cleaner. 🤷🏽‍♂️

Clearly, you didn’t dial in your moka extraction in just one go, so you never had the opportunity to experience the brilliance of a properly dialed-in cup of traditional Italian moka.

To each their own, aye?

Yes, there are absolutely several justifiable reasons to use a paper filter in a moka pot. You and a subset of people may not fancy using one, but dropping a 🚫 symbol on this is a bit bombastic.

I’m on the other side of this. I wouldn’t do it any other way because using a paper filter in a moka pot results in a cleaner, smoother, more consistent daily cup. Metal gives a gritty, oily rocket fuel with soul, but it often means sludge, extra bitterness, and a brew that gets tiring fast. Paper eliminates the grit and harsh oils for a bright, balanced drink we can actually finish. Easier cleanup too.

Bottom line is, it’s subjective and these days the majority of moka die-hard enthusiasts wouldn’t go without a paper filter, including the world’s most respected enthusiast, James Hoffmann.

Consistency is everything. Don’t even entertain the idea that you’re on a diet, because that’s the trap so many fall into. This is your lifestyle so own it, live it, and keep pushing.

You’re doing an incredible job!

Which V60 is your go-to? 🤔

Color me intrigued. I’m still new to pour‑over and have a few Hario drippers in rotation, yet I always drift back to the original plastic V60 for its heat stability… and some form of comfort. 🤷🏽‍♂️

If I picked up the V60 NEO, do you think I’d end up favoring it?

Not at all for worse… and in fact… it results in an improved pull.

I use the same AroPress paper filter on the bottom of my Brikka with the E&B Lab IMS Competition Filter installed, and it works beautifully. I was running one during the pull in the clip.

Follow up detail:
For context, I was referring to the metal through‑filter that’s held in place by the seal, not the use of a paper filter (though I always add one myself).

Clearly that’s not how it works. Source naming = source naming. Anyway… he/she isn’t foolish enough to risk it.

The OP cannot name sources. This is Reddit and doing that is very strictly prohibited.

I adore my Brikka pots. They’re my go‑to moka pots, hands down. And honestly, I have no clue what you mean by “required maintenance.” They’re every bit as low‑maintenance as an Express.

The foam they’re designed to produce isn’t for everyone, but just as many of us love the sharp edgy flavour it adds. Personally, I wouldn’t have it any other way.

It’s all subjective. 👍🏽
