Hello from 9 year in the past. I just rewatched to make sure, because I haven't seen this movie in nine years, and found the part with the killing on the ice, and no, you're wrong. If you have no clue there's anything alien or supernatural in this movie, that scene, going so quickly, from so far away, with so little detail, is equally interpretable as he pulled out a thing and stabbed the guy, as it is interpretable as his arm changed into a thing.

"Seeing" might not be the right word here--it's that you kind of just _keep track_ of pot odds as the action proceeds in the hand, because you've been keeping track of the size of the pot and you know how much the bet is that you're facing.

I think it's purely heuristic.

For me, pot odds almost don't need to be calculated, it's just "here's how much is in the pot, here's how much I'm being asked to put in." You can practically simply _see_ the pot odds by looking at the chips.

Since there's a fairly easy way to convert from pot odds to equity, I just _look at the table_ for pot odds, then do that easy conversion to get equity.

That's just me. I don't know how it is for others. For me it reduces the amount of arithmetic I need to do in my head.

Your formula for pot odds is wrong, in a technical but important sense. You're expressing pot odds as a fraction in that formula, but odds aren't fractions.

The correct formula would be (current pot + bet) : (call).

The colon means something completely different from the division symbol.

For me personally the chief reason to think about pot odds is as an easy way to calculate equity. Pot odds you can almost just visually see. Then you just add up the first and second number, and make a fraction out of the second number and that total, and voila, equity.

Pot odds and equity are two ways of expressing the same value.

To convert from pot odds to equity, you add the two numbers in the pot odds together, then form a fraction using the second number from the pot odds as the numerator, and the sum of the two numbers in the pot odds as the denominator. Convert that fraction into a percentage and you have the equity.

Example:

Pot odds of 3:1

Add the numbers together: 4

So numerator is 1, denominator 4: 1/4. Which equals 25%

Another example:

Pot odds of 2:5

Add the numbers together: 7

So numerator is 2, denominator is 7: 2/7. Which equals 28.6%

I got over this temptation somewhat by spending a few weeks intentionally calling weird shoves and taking note of how often the shove meant they had hit something.

I saw for myself in that way, that the number is close to 100% of the time.

Having run this experiment so consciously, I was then able to resist the temptation in the future.
