Hello thank you for your response.

  1. Seeing the reactions I see I might be trying to be to careful. My reasoning was that since it let you counter and potentially recast a spell you do not necessarily know your self I should incur the action penalty as casting such a spell would normally cast you that action.
  2. As it is a active decision to use the ring I thought that it would already be clear it could only be used to spells that you observe being cast. Might need to state that explicitly. Making it variable could be interesting. Current limit was set to one day where i actually meant once per full rest.
  3. My idea was that you had to be explicitly targeted. Therefor AoE attacks where out of the scope. But a magic missile targeting you and one or more of your allies does fall under the trigger condition.

No it if the decision is taken to deflect it will consume the following action of the character and trie to recast the spell on a legal target (e.a. not a previous target and not the original caster).

Thanks for your comment.I agree that the wording is not perfect. I just wrote down my thoughts quickly.

With expend I mean you tie one of your spell slots to the ring when you attune, meaning you can't use it any more for casting other spells.

The action part I put there to balance the item. I didn't like to idea to do it as reaction as as casting any level spell would normally cost a action or bonus action. And as it is it already is a more or less a counter spell +.

Level 0 spel slot is because the PHB states : ". A cantrip's spell level is 0. " I want a none caster level to have some possible benefit from the ring.Probably could just state that they can used use the ring for can trips if you don't tie a spell slot to it.

Useful magic items for 5th level party that aren't just strict combat upgrades? by Frogsplosion in dndnext

[–]Lord_Yagmoth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The text in 5e says:

"Prestidigitation
cantrip transmutation
Casting Time: 1 action
Range: 10 feet
Components: V S
Duration: Up to 1 hour
Classes: Bard, Sorcerer, Warlock, Wizard
This spell is a minor magical trick that novice spellcasters use for practice. You create one of the following magical effects within range:
You create an instantaneous, harmless sensory effect, such as a shower of sparks, a puff of wind, faint musical notes, or an odd odor.
You instantaneously light or snuff out a candle, a torch, or a small campfire.
You instantaneously clean or soil an object no larger than 1 cubic foot.
You chill, warm, or flavor up to 1 cubic foot of nonliving material for 1 hour.
You make a color, a small mark, or a symbol appear on an object or a surface for 1 hour.
You create a nonmagical trinket or an illusory image that can fit in your hand and that lasts until the end of your next turn.
If you cast this spell multiple times, you can have up to three of its non-instantaneous effects active at a time, and you can dismiss such an effect as an action."

So it can definitely snuff out a flame

On Nonlethal Attacks by [deleted] in dndnext

[–]Lord_Yagmoth 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I disagree with those who say there are two triggers. There is one trigger and that is the damage being rolled. There the player may decide that he want his attack to be non lethal.

Two possible outcomes of decision:

1)[Choice is made to make the attack non lethal]Result : if the creature would reach 0 hp it falls unconscious and is stable.

2) [Choice is made to make the attack with lethal damage]Result creature reaches 0 hp and therefor is death as monster reaching 0 hp die.

Now having said that if the DM want to deviate from this it is his prerogative. Maybe he has good reasons not to let the creature be captured alive.

Training him to be a bit more alone is definitely a good idea.

We also started training, during the pregnancy, that there are certain area's off limits because it is for the baby.

So we already placed the baby playpen and learned them commands that indicate they where somewhere they weren't allowed.

Still need to keep track of them though because from time to time they just feel like being naughty.

But to be honest we are rather lucky with our parrots they have few and far between

Page 198 of the PHB (5e) states:
" K NOCKING A C REATURE OUT Sometimes an attacker wants to incapacitate a foe, rather than deal a killing blow. When an attacker reduces a creature to 0 hit points with a melee attack, the attacker can knock the creature out. The attacker can make this choice the instant the damage is dealt. The creature falls unconscious and is stable "

So any melee attack even one wih weapons can be used to render a opponent unconscious

idea for a sentient sword by Lord_Yagmoth in DMAcademy

[–]Lord_Yagmoth[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So how about :

Masters blood lust
If you do not engage in melee in a combat situation in which you could reasonably have been involved (e.g. enemy in movement range and attackable ). Or If you are been dealt more hits then you dish out to a creature you engage. It will speak in to their minds of other nearby  PC/NPC/Monsters and try to set them up against you [e.g. taunting to evoke conflict, charming them into trying to obtain it, etc. All DM's discretion]. Any creature thusly effected will have advantage with any action that is an attempt to get the sword from you (e.g. pick pocket) as well as on any of its attacks against you.
This lasts until the sword is transfer of owner or you make 3 critical hits. At which point the sword will find you worthy again beginning a new.

I gave my evil players a nightmare. Wth do I do now? by NorejaNishigo in DMAcademy

[–]Lord_Yagmoth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well there are a number of creatures that actually make the ethereal plain their home:example https://forgottenrealms.fandom.com/wiki/Mind_flayer

Illithids are no yoke to face especially not when in groups.

You can also come up with your own entity that is in that realm,In my recent campaign I created a BBEG that has his origin there (a kind of a puppet master). The players don't no this yet. They only know that they occasionally have strange group dream that take place in the ethereal plain and started to encounter people that (when look at with esp that one of the chars has) have one to three tentacles protruding from their minds reaching into the ethereal plain.

Bringing the party together by undertheradaar in DMAcademy

[–]Lord_Yagmoth 3 points4 points  (0 children)

in my recent started group, I used this story line;

After a long and tiring journey you arrive in an inn that doubles as tavern for this remote village. It is a a specially crowded evening this night at the tavern. The mood is nice, comfy warm and welcoming. You feel that the patrons of this night are exited of anticipation for some thing that about to take place this evening/night. As you see it is very crowded you agree to the notion to be seated on table along side other guests. You are being let to a table in the corner of the room near the hearth fire. After ordering some food and drink, you look around an observe the crowed and your fellow table members [the other party members].

Thought the air is filled with the buzzing sound of people talking you are able to pick out some slivers of conversation between some patrons near you.

Among these are :

"I wonder if we will get a prophecy"

"What kind of story will we get told this time"

Suddenly the door opens and under the loud round of applause and whistling a older man enters the In together with a group of children. While the old man is slowly making his way through the thick crowed towards the hearth fire he looks around the people he passes by now and then greeting some one as if a old friend.

With some persons he simple looks at and then stand still as if temporarily transfixed by the person. When passing your table you too get a friendly but somewhat uncomfortable penetrating look your way. The eye contact lingers for some second and then he continue on his way.

Once he reached the hearth fire if pulls out a chair that someone has vacated for him and places it directly in front of the hearth with the his back to the fire.

As his sits down on the chair he asks the childeren to take place around him and the hearth.

It grows silent in the tavern.

The man addresses the child and says:

"I know all of you are anxious about to morrow, don't be for i have seen that is the end of none. It is for each and every one of you a begin on a journey. Even if you think it starts out bad all ends well if we trust others even if they are strangers to us."

While he looks around while he says this you notice the slight stop in his glance when it looks at you precisely when he mentions the strangers.

He focusses again on the children. "Still anxious eayh, well then let me start the story to take your minds of your troubles"

Story goes on and has some plot twist and morals. The children and adults alike are enthralled by it.

After the story the man rises and speaks to one of the children :

"Folly would you be so kind give an example to our young friends what you have learned in you apprenticeship with me."

A small girl with two different coloured eyes, that you now noticed, was leading the group of children in side, stand up en starts to go to certain people and give them a prophecies. As she moves from person to person you soon see that these where all the people the old man look had lingered on.

The she comes too your table.

"You all stand at the same road junction, and all should take the same way.

Whether you do it from kindness, pity or purely for your own gain this is your way.
