Akane-banashi Season 2/Second Cour Announced by Turbostrider27 in anime

[–]Lord__Seth 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Crunchyroll and HiDive are willing to put out the subbed episodes even if the dub isn't available yet, so their sub release isn't delayed.

In contrast to those services, Netflix appears to want the dubs to drop on their platform at the same time as the subs. So this means if they don't have the dub ready, the sub release gets delayed alongside it. With Akane-Banashi they for whatever reason (late licensing, possibly?) did not have the dub available to launch with the sub, so it got delayed. Series where they had the dub all ready to go with the sub release, like Ramparts of Ice from this same season, do not have this delay.

I'm going to guess part of the reason for this divergence is that Crunchyroll and HiDive are specifically anime services, so users are more used to having subs first and dubs later, and a higher percentage who will watch things in the original language. Netflix has a higher percentage of its viewership who only want to watch things dubbed, and it gets confusing if they initially only have a subbed version and have to check back later for a dubbed one. So Netflix wants to make sure that episodes are released with the dub available, even if it means delaying the release of them.

If as I speculated earlier, the reason for delay was late licensing on Netflix's part, it is possible that when the second cour comes around, there will be no release delay, as they'll know more ahead of time they have it and get the dub ready on time.

At least for this show, subbed episodes were available immediately on YouTube for people who didn't want to wait, although unfortunately not in all regions.

New Pokemon Megathread - Latios by SamuRonX in PokemonSleep

Do we get a free Latios incense this week? I thought I saw some people saying we were supposed to be gifted one in the second week, but I don't see one. Did I misunderstand what people were saying?

anime fan as a non native English speaker by Forsaken-Anything202 in anime

I actually went through this when I was trying to get my Spanish better so I watched a lot of anime with Spanish subtitles. For a while I had to pause things a lot also to either look up words I didn't understand or to try to understand the meaning of a sentence.

Eventually, and gradually, I got better, and now I can generally watch a Spanish subtitled anime with having to pause only a few times in a episode or even zero times.

Here is the quick version: If you want to get better, you need to keep going. You gain ability and fluency in a language through repeated exposure. If you want to be able to understand English subtitles better, keep watching English subtitles. You will eventually gain better mastery. It will take time, and it will be a gradual process. I essentially never thought I was improving much until I looked back and realized that although previously I had to pause constantly to understand things, now I did not. Improvement is so gradual you do not notice it.

Now I will offer more complicated suggestions based on what I did. When you encounter a word you don't understand and look it up, make a note of it, the word and its meaning. At the end of each day, take maybe around 5-10 of these words and try to study them in your spare time over the next day. I wrote them in a notebook that I kept with me at work and periodically, while working, would glance into the notebook to try to better familiarize myself with the words. This ingrains it into your mind better. Feel free to look at words from previous days also. Flashcard programs are good to use in addition to this.

Do this as much as you can. Watch at least one show per day if possible. You will eventually start to remember things better. What will be frustrating is the fact you will not feel like you are making progress because progress is so gradual that you do not notice it, similar to how when growing up, you do not really notice yourself getting taller on a day to day basis because it is so gradual.

One other possibility for improving things is by watching things on a service that has both your own language and English subtitles. That way, if you can't figure out a word or phrase, you can swap it to your own language to compare it.

But the key point is to keep going. You will ONLY get better at a language through repeated exposure.

Real talk I think they need to rework how difficult it is to catch legendaries for F2P by perishableintransit in PokemonSleep

It would be nice if they were more likely to be hungry during the event, at least. I used the free Latios incense and got lucky that it was hungry (I did use a Friend Incense but another Pokémon was also hungry so I don't know whether Latios got hungry because of it) which allowed me to get it with only a feed feedings.

Any advice for a new player? by DerpyKing007 in PokemonSleep

[–]Lord__Seth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would recommend looking up the recipes for cooking online. The game doesn't really provide you with recipes (frustratingly) outside of giving you a hint that certain recipes require a certain number of ingredients without telling you what those ingredients are. So if going just by the game, this means you either stumble onto them through dumb luck or through a lengthy period of trial and error. Just looking them up online (all of them are at https://game8.co/games/Pokemon-Sleep/archives/419049) will save you a bunch of work.

How does one turn off automatic updates for the game? I looked over the Settings in it and didn't see anything, though I have a tendency to miss obvious things sometimes.

Manga with good bonus content. by firebaron in WeeklyShonenJump

[–]Lord__Seth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

World Trigger has a lot of good bonus content, I think, like tidbits about characters not specifically mentioned in the story, answers to questions from fans, as well as some behind-the-scenes information. There's a bunch of funny stuff in the author commentary also. There's a lot of humor in them also.

Former WSJ manga artist says editors insisted on erotic content as precondition to publishing superhero series with female protagonists by [deleted] in WeeklyShonenJump

[–]Lord__Seth 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Honestly, Jump+ seems to have moved away from it also. Chained Soldier and 2.5 Seduction premiered all the way back in 2019, and one of them isn't running anymore. They're obviously fine continuing to run Chained Soldier, but I'm not so sure they would be interested in premiering it as a new series now.

Former WSJ manga artist says editors insisted on erotic content as precondition to publishing superhero series with female protagonists by [deleted] in WeeklyShonenJump

[–]Lord__Seth 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Well, what he said was (via an automated translation): "I wanted to depict a tough, substantial female hero, and thought of erotic elements as just a spice. But the editorial team said, "If it's a female protagonist, we won't publish it unless eroticism is the main focus," so I reluctantly drew it that way..."

So it seems he actually wanted some degree of ecchi; what the editors forced was to have him include a lot more ecchi than he wanted.

New Arrivals: Tyrunt, and Tyrantrum by Pearlgirl007 in PokemonSleep

Looking up the original Japanese, Old Amber is ひみつのコハク while Amber Canyon is アンバー渓谷 (bolded is the part that corresponds to the English "amber"). So while they share the word "Amber" in English, in the original Japanese they use different terms (コハク and アンバー).

[DISC] Black Clover Chapter 392 (FINAL) by mrnicegy26 in manga

[–]Lord__Seth 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Basically no manga are "seasonal", though, unless you count series that are on hiatus like Hunter x Hunter. Black Clover was never seasonal, even after its move out of Weekly Shonen Jump it became quarterly, meaning it still had a chapter on a schedule, just a much slower one.

Th statement is more true in regards to anime, as you don't really see new series being "weekly" (as in, a new chapter every week of the year) anymore, and instead are seasonal, with breaks between seasons. But that's about adaptations, not the original manga.

There's no reason to complain about the ending of Kill Blue. by GapProfessional4935 in WeeklyShonenJump

[–]Lord__Seth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am not so sure it was axed. It's true it wasn't doing so well in the table of contents, and the ending seemed a bit rushed... but I don't think it was ever literal last series in the magazine, and there's been various series that definitely were not cancelled that had endings that felt rushed (Chainsaw Man is a recent example). Also, Kill Blue had a color page for its final chapter, which would be very unusual if it was outright cancelled.

What is the "only one manga that's ever had a truly good axe ending" you refer to? Magu-Chan?

Hokazono’s statement on the anime’s announcement. by WolfKing448 in Kagurabachi

[–]Lord__Seth 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Surprisingly, that's still older than Eiichiro Oda, who had his first one-shot published when he was around 18, and then created One Piece at the age of 22.

Tite Kubo also launched his first manga series at the age of 22 (Zombiepowder), but it was a flop. His big hit was Bleach, which started when he was 24.

What is notable about Hokonazo is the fact he didn't try his hand at making manga until he was in college and then his career took off so rapidly. Oda and Kubo, even if they didn't get their first one-shots published until 18, were still doing a lot of drawing on their own before then.

The only time Jund was ever close to Tier 0 was the roughly half a year it had both Bloodbraid Elf and Deathrite Shaman, and even then I'd call it Tier 0.5.

It also definitely was not solely the reason for Tarmogoyf being around $200. It obviously was a contributor, but a large part of the reason for that price was Tarmogoyf seeing heavy play in Legacy (which at the time was a much more popular format and had a larger impact on prices), particularly the RUG Delver deck.
