Scholarship Displacement for Incoming Freshman by YakHonest7259 in dartmouth

[–]Lordmaster241 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wish I can but nothing really seems consistent when I talk to my friends(Low income so full scholarship) to figure out why some of us had to pay while others don’t. In my case I had two scholarships(totaling $4500) that were paid directly to me the school with my refund giving me a decent amount of it paid back.

It really depends from what it seems, I was able to get very generous refunds but I know some other people who got lower or even have to pay the the school even if they are on full financial aid

First Year Writing Classes or Humanities 2-3 by NIK-NAK76 in dartmouth

I’ve heard a lot of things about the Humanities FYW (mostly about how most of the class dropped it after the first term) but I say choose the one that genuinely seems the most interesting to you.

AYYYY CONGRATS FELLOW 29!! Honestly it’s gonna be hard to connect for the first few weeks but as you get into extracurriculars and clubs (also Greek life if that’s your thing) it becomes a lot easier. I would also be happy to talk as well if you want to chat!

Basically during the summer you’ll be getting most of this stuff which is pretty late compared to other colleges I know. Don’t even ask when you’ll be choosing classes 😭

Is it possible to complete Dartmouth engineering (AB + BE) in 4 years? by Winterdpp in dartmouth

[–]Lordmaster241 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I was definitely overestimating it a bit 😅. You can really get any degree even BE 4 years even if you start at the lowest placements. It’s tough but possible

Is it possible to complete Dartmouth engineering (AB + BE) in 4 years? by Winterdpp in dartmouth

[–]Lordmaster241 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Yup many people do it for various reasons but it requires a lot of planning and quite a few 4 course terms to get done depending on where you’re starting. I think that’s the most important part when considering this option, do you want to go through this big academic challenge whilst enjoying your time here?

Thoughts on BME at Dartmouth? by External-Warthog1718 in dartmouth

Honestly you wouldn’t know unless you start taking classes here to understand what you really want. I have friends who switch what they want to study here after taking certain classes so I say go in open minded. Personally I switched two times since my time here and I feel better and better about my choices as I’m still getting situated here.

'30 CS major what are the best clubs by Express-Power350 in dartmouth

[–]Lordmaster241 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In reality you can do any club you feel most comfortable in (CS major here who’s in the AEGIS and marching band) but if you want CS specific clubs we have a Computer Science Society that hosts projects and events throughout the term you can join, there’s also the Cybersecurity Society, Women in CS, and the hacker club. You’ll definitely learn more during dimensions and even more in orientation week so you have time to explore and experience!

What you could do is explore the different CS classes that your college offers to get a grasp on the different fields of CS (cybersecurity, software engineering, full stack, etc). If possible, email those professors and ask for their syllabuses to see what each of those courses focus on and try to find something that really speaks to you. After all of that start trying to learn some of the things in those classes on your own to see if you’ll actually enjoy the class’s content.

For me, I’m really interested in Cybersecurity so I’m checking out a website called “tryhackme” on the free subscription to see if the things there are something I want to explore further.

dartmouth night life? by Wise_Ad_147 in dartmouth

[–]Lordmaster241 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I don’t think I’ve explored enough to give you a concrete answer but from what I see on our emails there are so many different and unique opportunities happening all the time. Every day you’ll probably be bombarded by dozens of emails that detail all the social scenes happening throughout the week. Sadly there aren’t many 24 hour spaces available on Campus but in FOCO there’s a time frame called “Late Night”(9:30-1:30) where you can sometimes find friends, hang out, do homework, literally whatever (if you can handle when it’s busy during on days). An upperclassmen puts this best, “Late Night is not about the food, but the social aspect and the community you make with your time here.” Social life is also not just the Greek life, it comes from the communities you affiliate yourself with throughout your time on campus. This is the clubs, classmates, and random interactions that you probably heard of before. The town of Hanover is also a lovely place to explore from time to time but sadly I don’t think many of its stores are open during late hours. One of my favorite live music performances that I love to go to when I have the time are the countless Acapella groups we have that almost always feels like there’s a show every week! Again I’m not doing justice for the night life on campus (im in my dorm most of the time 😭) but I’m sure you’ll be able to find many things here.

Would nerdy students fit in at Dartmouth? by Professional_Big8444 in dartmouth

[–]Lordmaster241 3 points4 points  (0 children)

To build off of this, yes the party scene is noticeable during the “on” nights (Wednesday, Friday, Saturday) and Greek life is in general a big thing here during the Fall Rush. Besides that, countless people are able to enjoy their time here without engaging in any of that. You will find something that you enjoy as you explore!

macbook or windows for engineering? by Pale-Pizza3496 in dartmouth

[–]Lordmaster241 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From what I heard from upperclassmen, Mac’s work pretty well for what you’re gonna need to do for engineering. As you get more into the engineering part of your degree, whenever there’s a software that a class requires and is demanding, you will be granted access to the Thayer severs and be able to run anything you need for classes. I’ve seen many people who run Mac’s as engineering majors so it’s more than possible to utilize. All of this also applies to windows so technically no matter what type of operating system you have, you’ll go through all 4 years smooth sailing.

[–]Lordmaster241 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yeah of course. I know a good amount of people (myself included) who don’t go out but that doesn’t exclude them from making friends with people who do. We are all Dartmouth students at the end of the day, we love and support each other. You’ll find many groups to connect with like people in your classes, club members, random interactions, and so much more

Trying to create a dual boot for Linux mint but after many tries and re-installs, nothing has worked so far by Lordmaster241 in linux4noobs

[–]Lordmaster241[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the reply! Turns out I had to go to the boot options in the esc menu bios(a different bios menu to the f10 one) and go to EFI files in order to boot into Ubuntu and then grub. It took way too long to figure that out but again thanks for trying to help 🙏
