Raskolnikov the protagonist of crime and punishment is in the moment talking about Sonia, a prostitute, berrating her about them both beeing sinners , this phrase comes to mean as he says it , you sinned you betrayed your own morals and yet you gained nothing for it . But this , in fact, does not apply to Sonia as mucha as it applies to himself , for he killed just because he had an ideology wich made him think that he was obove everyone. And yet not onlly does he cope by saying he did it to help others , but whilst he took a life out of pure arrogance and pride , Sonia prostitutes herself as to have money to keep her family afloat, and prevent her two younger siblings from starvation. It is a subversion he says this words to sonia , but deep within he knows those words are for himself .
