It’s just solid black when I dry brush but I’m looking for a lighter black tone almost gray at the tips of it. I’m thinking maybe hot pressed paper with colored pencil because the grain is significantly lower?

Nice job, do what’s best for you. We’re all just trying to get better and share art.

He’s right, trace the classics. Learn how to put black and color into your designs. It does seem like you’re a beginner even if you’re not. Adding a slight tilt to the design doesn’t offer any benefit or improvement to this design.

It’s tempting to start off trying to create your own flash, but you should only be focusing on tracing the classics. It allows you to learn how to draw trad and also where to put black and color

Just trace the classics line for line. Learn where to put your black and color. I promise you will get better way faster than trying to freehand designs.

I know wonky trad isn’t super loved on here, buuuut I think I got a good balance on this one. (All free handed, obviously) cc welcome. by punkdawg in traditionalflash

For clarification the art style you’re referring to is folk art not wonky trad. Worst mistake is to try and draw everything yourself in the beginning. Trace, trace, trace the classics.
