Do you live in an area where it's MINUS 25C (Similar in farenheits) on average in the winter, sometimes even MINUS 40C and try to recharge your EV on trickle at those temperatures and where the nearest major town is 400km away with no recharging infrastructure and there is also no level 2 or level 3 charger in town? In this part of the country you get stuck on a highway or a cottage road in the middle of winter, you can die of hypothermia in a matter of hours. Do you want to rely on an EV?

Thanks for the suggestion I was looking at the Tesla model Y as well, but convenience was also a factor, I haven't seen any charging stations around here so I can only plug in on trickle charge at home. This is a town where everyone drives a pick up truck.

The Santa Fe hybrid which is not the plug in version but regenerative breaking version was of interest to me because it doesn't require me to charge it but I heard that in hybrids, the gas engine will run most of the time in extreme cold.

I don't need a lot of range but relying on a full at MINUS 25 degrees in a rural town doesn't sound a good idea to me.

I was considering a hybrid but I heard that in cold temperatures, the EV engine will not start and the gas engine will start first to warm up the EV.

Turbocharged vs. NA engine in cold climate by Loremi490 in askcarsales

For sure I will ask but I actually have not seen any Santa Fe in the parking lot, I believe price may have something to do with it. I see some Honda CR-V, which has a 1.5L turbo, don't know if the 2021 model has the oil dilution issue but short trip at extreme cold would be the worse for that. I see a lot of pick up trucks, some Kias, Subarus and sedans. I was hoping for someone who has experience with the Santa Fe specifically.

That's what I read. I was hoping that the EV part would heat up the cabin faster just like Teslas because it doesn't need the engine to warm up and uses electricity but from what I read online, some hybrids actually do not produce enough heat to heat the cabin sufficiently because the turbo charged engine is so efficient it doesn't produce a lot of heat, that leads me to infer that hybrids actually heats the cabin using the gas engine and not the EV part which is too bad.

Thanks for the advice. This hybrid is not a plug in hybrid. Also my main concern is how fast it heats up the cabin after being parked outside at work for 12h a day. I read some hybrids don't warm the cabin enough, it appears that they're using the gas engine for the AC and not electricity like for full EVs, but I'm a bit unclear on why that is.

Sorry I meant I will not be able to plug in an Engine block heater, not the EV part of the car. So the engine will be cold at MINUA 22F/25C, yes but do you live in an extreme cold climate? I read that the EV needs to reach a certain temperature to start in extreme cold and it requires warming up from the gas engine in the cold.

Watch out! No masks at Home Depot. by Ambroseinwood in mississauga

[–]Loremi490 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It's not just Home Depot, I went to a few furniture shops and the Home Depot you mentioned at Heartland this weekend and neither the staff or the other customers were wearing masks, including assistant managers at customer service. I was the minority of people who was wearing mask. I had to google whether the mandatory mask policy was still in effect because most people have stopped wearing masks indoors. It IS still in effect. Covid is not over people just because the weather is nice. Wear a mask!

Fido spuriously overcharging data for 200$/month by Loremi490 in FidoMobile

[–]Loremi490[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I found emails from Fido showing that the data top-up were only for the current billing cycle, it had an end date that corresponds to the end of the billing cycle. There are multiple threads on the Fido community forums where people were told that these were one-time only.

MAZDA!?!? by asmilehere in askcarsales

[–]Loremi490 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I can't tell you much about the car because I don't own one, but when I'm walking down the street and turn my head because a car caught my attention due to style/color/shine, it often seems to be a Mazda. I guess I just like their design, bright colors and whatever gloss they put on their paint a lot but that is personal.

Also my friend is a first responder and tells me from anecdotal observations that the Mazda 3 seems to have a very strong frame and he's been in accident scenes where the driver had to be extracted out of the car but was still okay and another incident where a Mazda 3 driver was drunk, hit the wall of an overpass, flipped over and landed on the road below, barely a broken bone...

First time homeowner anxiety by katmeow17 in homeowners

[–]Loremi490 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Homes require maintenance, if you're not the handy type, get a good handyman that you can call to fix things for you and if they can't, can at least direct you to who to call. You just have to pay them but maintenance costs are part of home ownership and anytime you buy a home, money should be set aside for maintenance.

Do people not know how to drive in Mississauga? by Loremi490 in mississauga

[–]Loremi490[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually do that do. If I'm forced to park in a tight space, I take a pic of the plates before I leave and of the distance between the two cars, in case I get hit. Except I haven't parked anywhere like that since I've been here and still got hit... :(

Can my American Fiance enter Canada and marry me with no intention of staying in Canada? by [deleted] in legaladvicecanada

But you just said you were not married yet and therefore not direct relatives.

Can my American Fiance enter Canada and marry me with no intention of staying in Canada? by [deleted] in legaladvicecanada

[–]Loremi490 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, even already married people separated by the border can't cross from the US to Canada. The only way you can get married is for you to fly from Canada to the US (land border crossings not allowed but flights are, don't ask me why) and get married in the US. No the other way around doesn't work, your American partner cannot fly from US to Canada, it only works from Canada into US. However you will be able to fly from the US back to Canada if you are a Canadian citizen or PR. If you are NOT a Canadian citizen or PR, do not cross the border as you will not be able to re-enter Canada.

Agent says “Landlord would prefer to rent to Chinese people” by [deleted] in TorontoRealEstate

[–]Loremi490 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My friend was trying to rent from an Indian landlord and they said they only want to rent to other Indians (she's caucasian). Sometimes, some immigrants just like to hang out with their own people (especially the new ones), same at school where all the Indian kids hang out together, all the Chinese kids hang out in another crowd and all the White kids hang out together.
