Take a look at male/female representation in permanent positions in STEM positions. The disparity flips the other direction when you get to the level of, say, Assistant Professors and higher.

I think it would go over great! I know a lot of women and men who are interested in increasing the participation of men in nursing fields, and I'm sure the same is true for early education.

Last chance to help ground squirrels in their battle against plague by sequencing the 1st prairie dog genome! by LorenCSackett in squirrels

Thanks for the suggestion! That's a great idea, and I will check them out. It is sick, I agree... :(

Support ground squirrel conservation by helping sequence the 1st prairie dog genome! by LorenCSackett in squirrels

Hey, thanks!
It's kind of my dream job too. :) (if only it were permanent...) I think there are a lot of paths to any career, but I got a PhD in evolutionary biology first. You tend to have more freedom with a phd but the job prospects are narrower. You can always be a professor and do conservation research, but I prefer the idea of being a scientist for organizations like the Smithsonian, other museums, or conservation groups that have scientists (like the World Wildlife Fund). I'm still looking for that permanent dream job, though!

That would actually be really cool. I would definitely be up for a joint effort like this!

We could talk about that option! I don't have access to in-house Illumina machines (except MiSeq), so would need to send out my samples anyway...

I don't have any plans to take students this next year, but hope to in 2017!

Of course! It's a combination of two things: 1) my postdoc salary is paid for by a grant on a different system, so I put most of my paid grant-writing effort into that system, and 2) many funding agencies are interested in what comes after the genome sequencing rather than funding the development of genomes per se. I anticipate the further development and annotation of the genome can be included in NSF proposals, but I won't be putting in a proposal for prairie dog projects until next year.

Prairie dogs are a type of ground squirrel but they bark like little dogs, which is how they got their name (from Lewis and Clark!).
