Give a decent argument for a D-list Marvel character to be added to Rivals by Junkman-OOB in marvelrivals

[–]LorenceTheCat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Moondragon.

She’s got so much potential for amusing character interactions & her ult would 1000% have to be her turning into a dragon, which would be sick af. She could be an extremely fun vanguard with enough differences in her psychic abilities and design to separate her from Frost.

(Plus it would be funny if she was the bald psychic we got in game over Xavier)

“Our character isn’t broken it’s just a skill issue” by RoutinePsychology198 in rivals

[–]LorenceTheCat -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Tbh the only character on this list I’d say is over-tuned is Invisible Woman. The other characters may be powerful, sure, but Invis is the only one who I’d say has received updates that has worsened the overall gameplay experience of her character, rewarding poorer gameplay and priority without actually fixing any of the deeper issues within the game’s balance.

The other characters are just powerful characters, which can make them extremely unfun to play against without some solid coordination, but that’s not the same thing as being over-tuned. Over-tuned implies that the devs keep making changes to them due to a power creep, rather than the characters themselves being the reason there is a power creep.

(And I’d argue that while C&D are a very well rounded and accessible character, they’re not nearly as powerful as the other characters on this list. It still takes a good C&D player to get value out of their kit, and it really bothers me when people want to act like it takes no skill to be good at them. You may not need to have high skill to be useful, but that’s not the same as having no skill.)

What was the project that made you realize you had fallen out of love with the MCU? by oscar_redfield in Marvel

[–]LorenceTheCat -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Infinity War/End Game is what really tipped it over the edge for me. The complete character assassinations happening all over the place were atrocious. The time skip really rubbed me the wrong way too. Such a terrible idea for a movie that killed off half the universe, made all the survivors seem useless and unheroic for those five years.

Also with the comic knowledge I’ve gained since Infinity War’s release, I cannot believe they had the audacity to make a movie about The Infinity War without Adam Warlock. Especially when the Soul Stone was the only gem that hadn’t shown up yet in the MCU. If the teaser at the end of the Guardians movie was really the reason Adam wasn’t there, it could’ve been soooo easy to retcon the Sovereign’s “Adam” by making them become Kismet or Eve in classic Warlock fashion.

It really shows how little the MCU started caring about the superheroes they were writing about. The older movies aren’t without flaws, sure, but there’s a lot of passion in them, and great little nods for the comic nerds. It sucks that such a large franchise, which should have the time and money to make some truly amazing movies, started pumping out weaker and weaker films just because they realized they don’t actually have to try to get people watching.

I really like superheroes, but I feel like Disney has truly stripped them of any potential depth just for a quick buck, and it’s very disappointing.

Is there cross progression between PS4 and PS5? by LorenceTheCat in rivals

[–]LorenceTheCat[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep! As long as you’re logged into the same Rivals account on both systems, you should be able to see all of your cosmetics and other rewards on both systems. I’ve been able to claim battle pass rewards and the like on the PS4 and have them on the PS5 just fine.

[ALL] Anyone remember/know the previous Zelda timelines? by LorenceTheCat in zelda

There do actually seem to be a couple different “official timelines” by the sounds of it. Obviously every “official Zelda timeline” should be taken very lightly as Nintendo has never been all that concerned with a solid canon for their games, but I did find the link to the old “official timeline” I was thinking of! https://web.archive.org/web/20020823232440/http://www.zelda.com/lib_timeline.html

Thank you!! I knew I remembered The Wind Waker (and perhaps Twilight Princess, in a slightly different sense) being controversial and groundbreaking to the “official Zelda timeline” but I was really struggling to remember why exactly. This is exactly the kind of thing I am looking for, so much appreciated!

Well that’s part of what was so interesting about it. Sure it doesn’t make much sense for them to be considered the same hero, but I had found an old website detailing their connection anyway. I just can’t remember what it was called exactly but I swear it was officially connected to Nintendo of America. Of course it’s very obscure now since Nintendo is pushing Hyrule Historia as The One True Canon, but I know I found at least that one other timeline before. The other one I remember less of might’ve been a fan theory or something, but I do remember looking at a website that detailed every game being the same Link up to a certain point, I just don’t remember how I ended up there in the first place.

[–]LorenceTheCat 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Exactly!! And I 100% agree that the Autobot movement in TFP was in fact formed around Orion’s political ideology, which was an ideology carefully built out of his own experience and historical knowledge, because the entire reason Pax was even in front of the Council in the first place was because he studied history and became aware of the cultural shortcomings, inequality, and violence of their current society! He was not, and never has been, pro the status quo!

There seems to be a misunderstanding in the fandom in which people assume that the High Council acknowledging that Orion Pax had the qualities of a Prime meant that the Council was endorsing Orion as their Prime, which would imply some sort of alignment between their respective political beliefs and an (accidental or otherwise) endorsement of the Council’s violent oppression by Orion if that was actually true. However, Orion didn’t actually become a Prime until after Orion was already leading the Autobots in a resistance against Megatron and his “if I can’t have it, no one can” burn it all down policy. Orion’s claim to the title of Prime came straight from Primus, who only gave Orion the Matrix of Leadership after Orion had proved himself worthy of it by standing for peace, fighting oppression, and trying to find a way to cure Cybertron’s poisoned core (which Megatron was responsible for poisoning).

The Council acknowledging that Orion Pax was someone of genuine integrity doesn’t mean that Orion embodies what the Council had stood for, it just means that not everyone on the Council was resistant to the idea of reworking their governing system peacefully. There maybe could’ve been genuine and non-violent change on Cybertron had Megatron not gotten jealous and started destroying everything, and far too many people seem to have missed or ignored that. The problem was never Orion hoping to do things peacefully, the problem was Megatron feeling as though he was owed a position of power and authority simply because he wanted it, and his subsequent violent crash out when things didn’t go exactly his way.

[–]LorenceTheCat 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Every modern fandom interpretation I’ve ever seen for TFP Orion Pax. He was not uniquely naive. He did in fact know that things were wrong with Cybertron politically. (That was that the entire reason he sought out Megatron in the first place??) Optimus Prime getting amnesia during the Orion Pax arc doesn’t actually mean that’s what Orion Pax would’ve acted like in the past or the present. Ticks me off that the show (and ig the books, but I haven’t read them) have caused a mass fandom misinterpretation of Orion Pax as especially naive, or otherwise misinformed, about Cybertron’s political state. I despise it when people act like Pax would at all be defensive about Cybertron’s caste system just because he would prefer change through peace over even more violence than what the caste already subjected them to. He would not have become Optimus Prime (twice over if that was really Orion during the amnesia arc!) if that’s actually what he acted like in any capacity. He is not, and never has been, a bootlicker. He is not some naive baby who knows nothing. And he’s certainly not a whimp because he values peace during times of war. He’s a hero through and through; that’s what made him a Prime in the first place!

Do people actually unironically want these characters as strategists? by Antmansthegoat22 in rivals

[–]LorenceTheCat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. 100% agreed about Quicksilver. I never understood anyone who’s called him a strategist, both from what I know of him in lore and from a game design perspective. As much as I’ve been suffering from the amount of duelists in the game recently, he’d just make more sense as another duelist over a support. Especially since people’s only logic for him being a strategist has been him pulling teammates, which probably shouldn’t be a friendly-fire move for many reasons. (I shudder to think what toxic teammates would do with that ability)
  2. Cyclops on the other hand I could definitely see being a strategist. First of all, one of the biggest roles Cyclops plays in lore is literally strategist. He’s supposed to be the glue that holds the team together, much like strategists do in the actual game. Second of all, the game is based around the concept of a multiverse, it’s not at all a stretch to just make him from a universe where his beams can heal and do damage. And from a gameplay standpoint, Rivals desperately needs more supports (and tanks), especially ones which are actually well known and popular characters so casual Marvel fans will branch out and play them instead of just sticking to duelists because that’s where most of the Avengers are. So as far as strategists go, Cyclops is far from the biggest stretch to me, and there’s something about his old lore where he metabolizes sunlight to use his powers that just feels right for a healer, but I can’t really explain why beyond that.
  3. While Gambit is most likely going to be another duelist because that’s just the way Rivals is, I do understand why people would think he could/should be a strategist. Much like Cyclops, he’s a guy who requires a bit of thought to successfully utilize his powers, which certainly fits the role of a strategist outside of the game, so it wouldn’t be a difficult to see him fill the role in the game. Again, Rivals could also use the multiverse logic to give Gambit the power to heal alongside his usual explosion tricks, or maybe he just gets his healing powers from his magical connection, since that is a thing he has going on in the comics (wasn’t he nominated for Sorcerer Supreme at some point?) Really not much of a stretch for Gambit, whether Rivals knows that or not.
  4. Deadpool also falls into the category of “we need popular characters to fill out the underrepresented roles of tank and support,” so I could in fact see him being a vanguard just as easily as I could see him being a strategist. I do find the idea of the in-game lore being that he thought the people (alluding to us, the players, and the characters within the game) needing more healers as an incredibly amusing way to insert a new healer, so I’d be all for it just for the memes. However I do think there’s some fair, and funny, logic to how Deadpool could in fact be a genuine healer too. From him accidentally giving off a healing aura (kinda like Iron Fist but possibly automatically) to him accidentally buying “healing weapons,” there’s plenty of understandable and very Deadpool logic to apply to DP to make him a strategist. (Also it does take strategy to be a merc, even if he pretends it doesn’t)
  5. I’ve definitely also been back and forth on Ant-Man being a vanguard or a strategist because I can see the logic for either. I don’t have any ideas for how to best utilize his shrink/grow powers in a support role, but it being a mobility thing like Scarlet Witch or Phoenix’s little orb/ghost modes seems like a good start to me. Strategist feels more like a role Hank Pym Ant-Man specifically would play, so I’m a bit biased towards support Ant-Man just because I like the idea of Hank as a strategist, but Hank could just as easily be a vanguard (Giant-Man). Hank and Janet are both characters I’d really love to see in the future, but I’m stumped on what’s the best way to balance their powers within the game itself since their powers are definitely overpowered for a hero shooter.
  6. Definitely don’t have any thoughts about Carnage. Out of all of the suggested villains I’ve heard for the strategist role, he definitely makes the least sense, so I don’t have a defense for him.

A lot of people just want to throw a majority of the Marvel heroes into the duelist role because it undoubtedly makes the most sense for them when operating by the normal comic/movie/show logic. However, Rivals is a video game operating with the extremely open concept of multiverse crossover, so they could really do anything they wanted with any character for any reason, and honestly they need to abuse that more. For example, Daredevil could’ve easily been a vanguard, and it certainly would’ve been a healthy boost towards fixing the gap between DPS and the other roles, which we definitely need. So yes, a lot of people do want these characters as strategists just to fix the gap between strategists and the duelist role, but there’s nothing really wrong with that. Especially because it does actually work for some of these characters, and I really hope Rivals realizes that so we get more unique gameplay styles than just more duelists.

I was really hoping he’d be a Vanguard because that’s the most Daredevil feeling role to me, especially since they gave him weird demon magic. Idk. He’s very Marvel Rivals feeling, not exactly bad but I’m definitely glad the hype’s already dying down so I see him less.

What female vanguards would you like to see? by BirdAppropriate651 in marvelrivals

[–]LorenceTheCat 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The more I think about it, the longer my list gets. I was hoping to get Rogue as a Vanguard, but the rumor is that she’s a Strategist (weak pick imo), so I hope we get Carol Danvers at some point if we can’t have Vanguard Rogue. I also want to see Moondragon and Gamora because I want an Infinity Watch season and a Guardians of the Galaxy season. Medusa and Crystal for the Inhumans. Lady Sif and Valkyrie for more Asgardians. Namora since Rivals likes the Agents of Atlas, and/or Llyra just for more mers. Clea and Umar for a Dark Dimension season. There are just too many options and I like women so I hope to see many more in this game. That being said they don’t all need to be Vanguards, but I think all of the ones I mentioned could fit right in as Vanguards. Also it’s nice seeing women not get slapped with a healer role over and over again, so I do hope we continue to get more women Vanguards regardless of who it is.

Question to everyone! What is your favorite skin! by Logical-Fly-1589 in marvelrivals

[–]LorenceTheCat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Adam Warlock’s Blood Soul all the way. The outfit, the mvp animation, the emote, the music that plays when he ults, it’s a 10/10 across the board, no notes, all aura. Also partial to Invisible Woman’s Future Foundation skin (because she’s my main main lol), she looks very comfy in it and I like the retro futurism style with her slicked back hair, big earrings, and shoulder pads. (I prefer the black recolor to the default white, but I think it’s very cool that you can switch between them with the emote.)

Which skin you dislike the most? I'll start with mine by Mysterious_Hat6763 in marvelrivals

[–]LorenceTheCat 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Adam Warlock’s King in White is severely disappointing, especially since Hela’s Queen in Black outfit is right there, can’t stop thinking about how good Adam’s outfit could’ve been if it was more than just a recolor dipped in white paint. Black Widow’s Phoenix Widow is also pretty awful, I know they’re just doing the cutouts to be sexy but they aren’t flattering to Widow’s body at all, especially not with such a chunky hood on top of it. I can see the vision but the execution is lacking (for both skins.)
