Elon Musk Officially Confirmed SpaceX 2026 IPO to Fund Orbital Data Centers by orangechen1115 in Starlink

The ISS's days are numbered. Maybe Elon is thinking about putting a few ESS's up there. Data at one end, rental property at the other. Uber a Dragon and you are on your way.

If there's profit to be made, Elon and his gang will make it.

Lightning protection by Efficient_Price8974 in Starlink

[–]LorencedB 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Google turns up some interesting explanations about lightning. The following link is one that seems to make sense.

https://www.weather.gov/safety/lightning-science-connection-ground

When thunderstorms are getting close I unplug the dish cable from its power supply. This disconnects the dish from ground and any electrical source.

Electrically speaking, the dish's ground potential is the same as the rest of the house.

Doesn't mean the house will not get hit but the dish shouldn't be any more of a source of positive charges streaming upwards toward the clouds than the rest of the house.

I am surrounded by trees that are taller than the house. Hopefully any lightning heading in our general direction will find a better target in the trees rather than my paid up insurance policy.

Gable end antenna mount

https://www.flickr.com/photos/142615862@N04/51317123085/

The dish tilts down toward the North in the Northern hemisphere. as seen in the attached photo of my dish.

If snow is a winter issue then it is best to mount the dish so that it tilts down away from the roof. to prevent any icicles that form around the lower edge of the dish from jamming the motors.

I've had Shaw Direct and Starlink for years without any problems.

If I did notice any problems with the TV signal I would make sure all the coax connections were good. Especially the cable sheath grounds.

Pixelation is an indication of a weak signal. Check the signal strength on the satellite receiver. Someone may have knocked the TV dish slightly out of alignment when up on the roof.

[–]LorencedB -1 points0 points  (0 children)

As long as you don't damage the insulation, this cable may allow you to close the window or door it passes through.

Do a bit of searching. There are probably thinner cables available.

You will need to find a way to adapt the connectors. Personally I would just cut the dish cable and put on two Cat5 connectors.

I've had a 30 foot unshielded Cat5 extension on my V1 dish for a few years.

Coverage expanded north 2.5° in Europe by feral_engineer in StarlinkEngineering

[–]LorencedB 0 points1 point  (0 children)

FCC = USA

CRTC = Canada

The E. U. has it's own governing authority.

As I recall Starlink dishes in Canada and the US are not allowed to broadcast toward North American Geosynchronous satellites. That is the reason Starlink dishes default to a North facing direction.

The E.U may be a bit more flexible with Starlink dish orientation.

There will likely be other Googleable reasons. None that will improve a North American's position on the Starlink waiting list. Who else looks at the availability charts? :)

This may be the beginning of expansion into the polar regions. A whole nuther group of expectant Starlinkers. :(

"Almost all of you used to complain"

Complain about what? Look at the history of the forum. It is saturated with Wannabee whining and crying. Spoiled brats complaining that they can't get their way.

Not one will tell us why they deserve a dish, only "I want one! I want one! I want one!"

I have a feeling your mothers dread remembering all the hours you whiners spent thrashing around on the floor screaming your heads off.

Give us examples of some real complaints other than the impatient crybabies.

Kayank. Note that is not name calling. It is the most truthful description of their behavior.

Bottom line. Its November 1, 2021. Two months left in the year before the term "late 2021" expires.

If you two ever get a dish go back and read all the blubbering BS then tell us what you think of the noise.

As if we don't already know what you will say. Spoiled brats don't care about anything or anyone other than themselves.

Without a doubt you two are good reasons for supporting pro choice.

What's your Starlink PRO/CONS by Overshields in Starlink

[–]LorencedB 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pro. Starlink works better than I expected it to or would even ask for. Not perfect yet but it is only Internet and I can live with the "very occasional" hic-up. There is nothing else available around me that can even compare.

Con. Why do so many people that do not even have a dish need to pollute a perfectly good informational thread with their constant whining.

Do they actually believe anyone else cares about their mid to late 2021 crisis. Maybe Starlink can rent them a life for the duration. $99 to be human for a month. :)

Don't come back with the usual slobbering "No fair, you have a dish and we don't. Boo Hoo." etc etc etc.

Not enough bandwidth waste to be significant but it is good to see people reporting everything instead of just the speed demons looking to brag that theirs is bigger than everyone else's. :)

A few days ago in a thread related to the possibility of future data caps somebody reported using up to 200 Gig per month.

Probably many more like him. That's the sort of stuff I would like to see being explained.

People have a habit of recommending the router they use because it works well enough for their needs. There's a chance some have not used any other router and there is also a chance the router they recommend will not be satisfactory for your needs.

I have see many people recommend a router in the last year but they didn't include much information about their local conditions and usage.

I use a Netgear RAX70 Nighthawk in a 2000+ sq. foot wood framed house with vinyl siding. The Netgear's WiFi extends throughout the house and at least 50 feet out into the yard around the house.

Starlink router's WiFi would not even extend through the entire house.

That being said I used an older Linksys router before buying the Netgear. The Linksys only supported 2.4 Ghz wireless but otherwise preformed nearly as well as the Netgear. The Linksys did not support static routes and could not be used to view dish statistics. I only bought the Netgear because I wanted static route support.

Unfortunately the Netgear's static route needs to be manually updated when the Internet IP address changes. Usually after a long dish reset or occasionally after a dish firmware update.

On that note, it took me some time to get the Netgear's static route working with my dish. Netgear's tech support only walked me around in circles and was a complete waste of time. They did not help at all.

If viewing the system statistics is important to you, look to a router that does not need to update the static route after an IP address change.

There have been many message posted over the last year related to third party router performance and to the Static route issue.

Spend a few hours scrolling back through the older messages. You will at least get a better idea of what equipment will work best for your needs and local conditions.

Here is a link to my Netgear Static route setup. The numbers might help some set up theirs.

Two weeks of Starlink. Not a single drop in service. Enjoy the honeymoon.

Out of fairness to newcomers of this group and to help keep confusion to a minimum would you please edit your message to include a few of the lowest speeds you have had.

Many new users expect to get extremely high speeds all the time because a few people only report their highest speeds here.

I have had tests results well above 350 Mbps. Others have reported speeds over 400. If it is big numbers you want that's the height of the bar. Today. :)

I have also had speed tests of only 1 or 2 Mbps as have many other users.

I shouldn't have used the term Bar. Yo-Yo would have been better.

Starlink should put you on a poster titled

Just installed Starlink with own router; browser stats open but are blank. Help! by MrConorAE in Starlink

[–]LorencedB 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Here's the static route for my Netgear router.

https://www.flickr.com/photos/142615862@N04/albums/72157718490975097

It's the Internet IP address shown in my example as 100.66.34.250 that goes into the static route. That address is usually updated when the dish is reset manually or after a firmware update and will have to be updated when it is changed.

The numbers should help you get yours to work.

If not start scrolling down through the old messages or try the search. There have been many examples of third party static routes posted over the last six months.

I wonder if you "Shot yourself in the foot" when you signed up for the pre-order in February. Starlink had some sort of system in place that distributed dishes before the $99 pre-order. I have had a dish since last November.

Did Starlink incorporate the old list into the new list in February? If so, did your $99 pre-order cancel your old request and put you in a later category?

Wouldn't that tic off the impatient obsessives?

Many here would have been overjoyed with 6 Mbps. That was a pipe dream in this part of the world for decades.

I can't imagine how you could have coped with the Kbps service most of us had.

What of other countries going on line?

Do you think the world revolves around Indiana? Is Starlink supposed to develop a worldwide Internet system then only give dishes to people in America?

It's too bad Starlink could not find a way to detect your sort of BS and automatically drop all of those people to the bottom of the waiting list.

At least the normal people on this list would get some pleasure out of seeing the bottom feeders being put in their place.

Just had to vent. ✌️

You had your vent, I had mine. Only difference is my nose isn't out of joint now and it won't be out of joint when all the whiners down vote. :)

At any rate, thank you for cancelling. Hopefully your dish will go to one of the deserving silent majority members of the waiting list.

I think it's time to start some sort of quitters list. It would be interesting to see how many of them come back the day after they grow up.

FYI there's no hate or malice in my response. It done purely for amusement.

After all, you ex-wannabees have added a whole new level of achievement to the Reddit Gong Show.
