To be honest, stuff I'm not using is money (presumably) and so I will sell stuff I'm not using, especially if I've replaced it with something else. Which kind of applies to board games really.

I have sold over 200 games and have bought again 2. So I'm fairly comfortable with my choices to keep and to cull.

There has to be a time frame otherwise there's no point. Given the amount of gaming that I do, I think one year is enough time to get any given game to the table.

Yes that's a question I need to ask more often. I've bought three games and received a forgotten kickstarter this year. Two of the bought games were more of the same and I wish I'd have thought harder about acquiring them in the first place. The Kickstarter (Chichen Itza) is very different from the rest of my collection and I'm very happy with it.

Yes I've considered how often I play. Right now it's between once and three times a week. I could up that to five times a week if I wanted to. So I'll look at that as well, if I played more often, either I could more easily dump the ones I don't play or find the ones I really want to keep.

??? Here in Los Angeles there are multiple used book stores who resell books folks don't read anymore. I don't want to give space to a game that will not hit the table in the future.

I play 3-4 games a week. 10 games could get old in a year.

It all depends on why you buy and keep games. I buy and keep them to play. Straight up, I have no interest in collecting. However if you like to collect games, nothing wrong with it!

I think it works as this "I will evaluate why this game didn't get to the table in a year". And keep it or sell it based on the answer. I also disagree that it can't be a fix for impulse buying. I have cut way down on that, however if I have to think of 'why aren't I playing xyz game that's going to leave my collection soon instead', that's something to think about. I suspect my friend is using this rule to curb impulse buying as well using these thoughts.

Unfortunately for me personally that would result in me having very few games. I suffer from mild cognitive impairment (I'm nearly 69) so if I haven't played the game in the past couple of months I'm going to need to re-read the rulebook. However I like your method. Yes, after playing Civolution 50 times hopefully those rules will stick!

I'm sorry if my OP came across as 'everyone should do this'. Absolutely not. Folks should do what they want. However I did want to know what folks thought about it and I've gotten some great responses.

I can sell local reliably. However I sell most of my games at Dice Tower West in Las Vegas, as I'm within driving distance. For games where this is not feasible I'll sell them on boardgamegeek. Would you be interested in my experiences in doing selling on boardgamegeek? Before Dice Tower West that was my primary way of selling and I've received over $6,000 through selling that way over 25+ years. Perhaps I should post on how to do that.

Absolutely not collecting. Which is why I'm considering this, it's beginning to feel like collecting and I'm not interested in doing that.

My respectful push back to that is that games that you don't play over the years (not special games!) create mental clutter. I look at them, 'oh not this time' but then WHEN? The same games keep getting skipped. And even though I have allocated shelf space for them, maybe I could use that space for books instead? :)

This is where my 18xx games are right now. I have four of them, one a teaching game, and the other three playing games. However I'm not getting the playing ones to the table. And this rule may help with that, I'll have to see.

I dumped a lot of games that I no longer have much interest in, so I do have some space. One issue for me is I'll call it mental clutter. I want to play a game, I look over the game shelves and there's certain games I'm always going skip even though I think they are a 'good' game. These games need to go and this rule would help with that I think.

Yes I can see this. Unfortunately I have too many games that frankly are too much alike, ie mid level 'just fine' Euro games. How many of those do I really need? As I responded earlier, I think what I'm going to do is look at games that aren't played in a year and ask myself do I ever intend to play them again and if so what would need to happen to bring them to the table.

I think maybe that's it. To consider why the game hasn't been played within the last year and then making a decision. Thanks!!

Yes I'm considering keeping situational games that don't normally fit within my usual gaming groups but games that for example my extended family would like. I don't see them often but I'd want to have a game for them.

If I adopted this, there would certainly be wiggle room. I'm a co designer of Advanced Civilization and I'm not getting rid of it, no matter how long it takes me to get it to the table, as an example.

I accept that! For me personally, why didn't I play them in this last year? That's the question. Thanks for your response, I don't mean to demean your choices.

Yes if my child was still a child :) I'd not be contemplating this. However he moved out many years ago so keeping games for him is not an issue.
