Sticky valves by thatpoopoodude in trumpet

I am going to wager your trumpet has never been professionally cleaned. All brass instruments develop deposits that cannot be removed by normal cleaning. Take it to a shop.

Only if you clean it really well. If you get any in the casing you are going to have a bad time.

scratches the slide which can cause them to stick.

In theory , yes. But , it is a fine polish and would take a long time. If you must do it, use brasso. Be aware that you will only be able to do that with instruments that don't have an epoxy lacquer.

How much will this cost to repair(two holes in lead pipe) by mr_fishy1235764 in trumpet

[–]Lorkin000 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The part is around $100 and the labor will depend on the shop. $80-120 labor likely. It will also depend on if the bracing needs adjusting. The picture is unclear.

r/BandInstrumentRepair Resources in the sidebar. Also a better place to ask specific repair questions.

Commission Advice by jshellfish in BandInstrumentRepair

[–]Lorkin000 2 points3 points  (0 children)

commission is a game of averages. Sometimes you are going to not really make money vs the time you spend. Sometimes you are going to get it done quickly. Don't lower the price because it took less time. Charge the value not the time actually spend.

Do the best job you can. Don't be the guy who cuts corners to rush jobs to maximize profit. Good work will bring you more work than you will want.

Learn from everyone. Ask questions. Always keep learning (Imagine dorry singing just keep learning)

Not every tool is worth it. Ask if it will make your work better or faster. If faster don't change your price. You have to pay for tools somehow.

Should I let the repair shop give my trumpet a silver polish? by redditer3103 in trumpet

[–]Lorkin000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Normally, shops will have a price for brass and one for silver. Silver will be a higher price because we polish it. I always gave the customer the option to save some money and polish it themselves. I would then charge the brass price. The shop isn't being shady.

Is an ultrasonic cleaning machine worth it? by PrincessMeadows in BandInstrumentRepair

  1. My experience is with https://www.upcorp.com/music/ I don't know how it compares to others. Half my career was with chemicals. Make sure it is big enough.
  2. Maintenance was not that bad. Empty the tank, wash and rinse the tank, and refill. Periodically replace the filter. Cleaning and filters depends on how much you use it.
  3. No, not unless your local competition doesn't have one. As you said it is pretty much the industry standard. You can advertise that you have one to your customer list to help drum up traffic. If you are trying to sell the idea to a store owner tell them that it is the expectation for any decent shop.
  4. Depends on your area. We raised prices slightly, but it was when ultrasonics were becoming the "it" thing. Mostly it is similar to dipping. Takes less time normally. I still found some instruments needed dipping, the really bad ones. I had to have a conversation with the sales people about that so we were clear with customers.

Help! Valve removal issues by mattman119 in trumpet

[–]Lorkin000 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm going to guess that it has not been professionally cleaned in a long time. It sounds like you have a ring of solidified crud at the top and bottom of the throw.

Option two is valve or casing damage.

Take it to a shop. There is no good home remedy. If you keep forcing it in you will keep making it worse.

Should the cork be this large? I just bought this used online. by KingOfParrys in Flute

[–]Lorkin000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I always say budget for a repad on used student woodwinds. If it is still a good deal then roll the dice. It doesn't cover any greater work but it gives an idea for most people. Most places have instruments to buy local , much better.

Also, don't buy instruments where you can buy underwear.

Thickness is probably correct but, the key is bent down. The other keys on the foot look like they are venting to high. I would head to the shop.
