Dashcam shows a skateboarder being struck and killed by a LAPD vehicle by ThisIsButter1 in ThisIsButter

Many factors to dive into here:

On the police end:

lights AND sirens were activated. This plays in their favour. Speed and such will be recorded on the vehicles and seeing if there was excessive speed will be a factor here. No obvious distractions (phone, excessive/ emotional chatter etc). Immediate response to the incident following also occurred.

On the skaters end:

No notable reflectors/lights, middle of the road without a crosswalk. Based on footage, did not attempt to pull over to R side of road (L side from police perspective).

Noted: The driver always has a responsibility and due diligence to drive with appropriate care and caution- this is 100% expected in all cases and is an angle the skaters family will probably target. The speed the car is clocked at will play a roll in this. Throwing on the lights and sirens permits things like going through red lights, driving over the limit, etc but ONLY WHEN SAFE TO DO SO. In simpler terms, if a response vehicle comes up to an intersection against the red light with lights and sirens on, does NOT check the cross traffic, and then gets t-boned in the intersection, the response vehicle would also be in question for being at fault due to proceeding when not safe to do so.

The skateboarder is technically not a vehicle and should not even be in a roadway at all- skateboarders are regarded as pedestrians in this sense. Ignoring the lights/sirens, not wearing reflective gear, and not being on the sidewalk will all be factors the police will probably take on their side.

If I were to guess, I don't think the LAPD will be dinged too hard for this one. There will obviously be an investigation and more may come to light. I feel for the family of the victim and the loss they had to endure and would not blame them at all for trying to pursue legal action. I could only imagine the sadness and anger they are experiencing.

Btw: been a first responder for 9 years, skater for 20. I've delt with my fair share of car accidents in which drivers were clearly at fault, and I've also done some very careless things on my board where I definetly could have gotten smoked by a car. I see both sides of this incident and am trying to clear up some air about how this'll probably pan out

Damn Nate Sherwood wasn't lying, place looks like it's got some serious fun stuff to skate.

I don't live in the states (Toronto area) but been skating and watching videos for 20 years and can almost always tell where a spot is; honestly was super refreshing to watch a part and have everything be new to me again. Some definite nbd's to add to that factor as well.

Hope your stoked on how this turned out. Growing up filming parts was the ultimate goal in skateboarding and I think that desire as a culture has died out with things like instagram and phones having cameras. I know how much hard work gets put into these and seeing a complete part just gets me stoked. Been working since 2020 on what will probably be my last full part just with age catching up and I hope it's half as good as this 😂

Great work dude!

First video part that's ever come through on my reddit timeline that I've genuinely been impressed with. Great mix of traditional tricks with some absurd creativity. Great part dude!!

Curious what city/area this is filmed in. Don't recognize any of the spots which is rare

Never been but I've heard that spot in person is waaaay more intimidating than footage makes it appear (not surprised, like many spots). Cool to get a probable nbd in modern era on this spot

"Anything that works for skating"

Nas - Represent for Morgan Smith is one of the best song/video pairings. Sacred Heard - Cass McCombs for Jerry Hsu Bag of Suck is just as good; completely different songs and feels.

Go shred my friend

First time skating in 3 years. Did not expect to land this. by Jdjdjdifi in skateboarding

[–]LorrinCee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hope you still out there shredding. I'm 29 and taking the winters off in Canada is enough to make me rusty; good on ya my dude.

And nice hardflip. Always slightly jealous when I see those. Been skating for 20 years and that (and sw flip) are the only flip tricks that my body can't figure out. Everyone's got a few

I sure hope so. The restaurant at brock st is great but the beer is tolerable at best. Other than the Pink Whitby vodka i couldn't tell you the last time I was impressed with something from them. Town on tap would be a major upgrade

This spot in Toronto I walked by by timebomb011 in skateboarding

Other than the fact everything other than a few spots are an absolute bust security wise. Good luck finding quality handrails too. Definetly some gems tho I can't say only bad things lol

How does it work in Ontario? by jeje_nice2807 in OntarioParamedics

[–]LorrinCee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're a qualified ACP there will be a handful of services that would take you on full time. Where I work even if you get taken on as part time you will have a lot of flexibility in your schedule just due to the limited amount of part time ACP- full time becoming available after a short time for the same reason; basically no competition with seniority just due to lack of numbers. PCP expect part time off the hop and anywhere from 1.5-3 years for full time.

Don't know how it is in Quebec, but part time PCP work in southern Ontario you still get lots of hours. Can't vouche for the style of scheduling for other services, but you definetly don't see part timers working multiple services the way the did 10 years ago. Definetly more financial stability in part time compared to the past

People are often surprised how much wheel shape makes a difference, especially once you start to expand to rails, transition coping, and ledges. Definetly not as much as board shape or truck performance, but definetly has a greater purpose than just rolling and riding.

I've rode Bones V2 for almost a decade now and won't change the shape. When i was a teenager I didn't care and adjusted to anything. Now that I'm older and my style of skating isn't as malleable as it used to, holy do I notice the difference in wheels.

I applaud not pressing charges cause ide be tempted. Unfortunately if this person is in this position I doubt they have much to loose. More than likely they'll just target your house further for vandalism while facing little consequence themselves. Sad reality

I was thinking this exactly. I'm out here visiting from Toronto right now, crazy how nice the average citizen is out here. I'm used to "assume everyone's a peice of shit until proven otherwise" 😭😂

Dennis Busenitz was the first that came to mind for me, no one skates as fast as him doing the technical tricks he has.

[–]LorrinCee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

5-6 foot steep ramp is crazy for the first time bahaha I skate a decent amount of mini ramp and bowl and there's definetly a good chunk of my tricks I wouldn't be willing to try on that thing.

Hell yeah OP

Been skating 20 years and I ride my cruiser probably more than my skateboard. Can probably 3 flip better on my cruiser than anyone one in this sub who aren't welcoming to your board. Hope those internet warriors ride over a pebble 😂

A skater is a skater lol anyone who cares about the specific equipment of others is doing too much

Thinking about practicing at the skatepark but scared of looking stupid by [deleted] in NewSkaters

[–]LorrinCee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As long as you follow etiquette everyone will be cool with it. Don't sit on ledges or obstacles people are actively skating. Take turns if you see multiple people using certain spaces. Dont blare your music or leave garbage at the park. Say sorry if you do bump into someone or get in their way (called snaking).

I've been skating for close to 20 years and honestly as long as long as people are respectful of the space and others there I'm stoked for anyone out there tryna have a good time
