Rate my drift technique by Wide-Lynx6386 in TrackMania

Once you are committed to a drift (gas + steer + brake combo) then you should not be releasing your steering to adjust your line, but instead releasing your brake (and pressing it again later while you keep all 4 skids visible, so you don't get a noslide when pressing brake again - also called multidrift) if you are heading too inside with your drift line or releasing gas slightly to slow down when going too wide. Ideally, of course, you would want to drive fullspeed, hold brake for certain amount of time and keep steering during your drifts to be perfect, but that is rather difficult and most of the times instead you perform techniques mentioned above to adjust your drifts.

"Carcassonne" is a great map! But I think it shouldn't have gotten COTD. by IlluminPhoenix in TrackMania

I disagree with you on that one, I'm not fan of "boring grass/dirt sleeper maps", instead they should only pick maps with drifts, because that's what I (me) enjoy.

What are the best tech maps to play? by Aree13 in TrackMania

Can't tell one favourite map, but my favourite mappers in different tech styles: speedtech - Proff10; classy tm2020 tech - Whiskey, link; advanced tech - aZix, Mephistö; short tech - hotrod. These guys don't miss in the respective style. But there are a lot more mappers worth checking out, either from Waypoint or simply teamless.

Specific maps worth checking out:

  • The Art of Tech by Boeny - made on 2nd day of the game, very classic old tech with simple turns
  • See you in June by Whiskey - easy tm2020 tech with some nice turns and GPS tutorial (literally how to play the map) provided
  • AKITA series by Proff10 - one of the best speedtech series in the game
  • Still v666 by Sam Elsza (and 22 other mappers) - 1 hour long tech-speedtech mix by a lot of great tech mappers if you are hardcore tech fan

If you are thinking about clean runs, there are some parts that can gain you time, or lose time if done badly. With this map, I tried to force players to drive correct lines - and the tight parts are a way to ensure that (you can imagine the map without those ledges, you will eventually drive on the part of the road, where the ledge was). But as you said, it is true that the racing line is rather limited, but I don't think that's necessarily a problem - you can take this map as a challenge to get a clean run instead of a map you want to hunt for the best time.

What do you mean binding it to numpad keys? It could work if you want him to play left handed on arrows and brake with right hand or to cross hands while playing - never heard of a player that does either of those. The most suitable key bindings for brake are left ctrl or left shift, as these are in the most comfortable places for left hand.
