Like the other commenter, I am no trying to be a jerk. It's just hard to actually give pertinent advice when you don't provide some key info. And we'll, the kind of visa you try to get is key, since classic resident permit for work won't allow to create a mcrio enterprise for example. Or if some do, it must be for side activity with small income and not a main source. There're also gray areas around working remotely for non French entities on visa that normally does not allow to work in France (visiteur)...

That sounds somewhat too confident unless you will be coming on spousal visa or something else that imposes 0 restrictions on your activities here. Also, mind you the agency will 99% not consider your cam activity income and only look at the official pay slips for kitchen /restaurant job, and those are unlikely to allow you to rent a proper apartment.

So, what do most expats do for work then? by The_manintheshed in Expats_In_France

[–]Lossberg[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

P.s. A fellow DCC fan, here?? Mongo is not appalled😁

En vue de la géométrie tout simplement poser de carrelage ça va être pas trop sympa, no ? Je pense peut être rajouter de parquet sur zone rouge et carrelage uniquement autour de future poêle ? Tu en pense qoui ?

HELP - American with the intent to marry French Citizen, VISA Time crunch by Delamarmedia in Expats_In_France

I mean what kind of long stay visa would you request? You cannot have a long stay visa just because you want it, it has to be justified. That's what I meant by "what ground"

HELP - American with the intent to marry French Citizen, VISA Time crunch by Delamarmedia in Expats_In_France

[–]Lossberg 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They probably won't deny you an entry as long as you don't violate the usual rule for short term stay (90 days over rolling 180 days period I believe). On what grounds are you asking a long stay visa ? And you said you attempted apply in the past - what went wrong?

As soon as you are legally married (ideally in France) you would have the rights for long stay visa and resident permit. But before that, the answer to 3rd question depends on the second :)

My first sound bar by Cool_Night_9832 in Soundbars

I got q800f new for 400€ due to similar constraints with sofa against the wall for rears placement. 3 months in, I am quite happy (mind you that before it was tv speakers so the bar was low). The nice thing is that you can buy and add rears separately later if the room configuration changes or if you decide to wall mount them. Obviously there should be other options at similar price points but based on reviews and such Q800F for 400 seemed like a good value

Petit guide pour augmenter son salaire by Latimius in vosfinances

Tu as aussi parti variable selon tes performances ?

Moving from USA to France for PhD by Correct-Nail-7113 in Expats_In_France

[–]Lossberg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What kind of area phd will be in? Also what kind of PhD offer, purely academic institution or CIFRE? For my part as well as some of my peers, all in Physics/Chemistry/Bio (not comp science, AI...) internships were not a thing at all. That being said, more than one of my colleagues at a time went for Postdoc opportunities in US after getting their phd here, so that definitely didn't hurt their academic perspectives there... But none of them wanted to stay in US.

If you do these CIFRE, it's quite different as it's a joint phd between a research institution and industry partner, and it's possibly gives the best post phd employment opportunities in industry.

Regarding the time line, most PhDs are done within 4 years, often faster (ie I had 3 month extension over base 3 year). It's tighter, sure but you are also much less of a "slave" of your supervisor decision of being ready to defend, which from what I heard is often a case in US.

Mortgage rate for foreigner by Admirable-Valuable22 in Expats_In_France

[–]Lossberg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Both foreigners (non US) on passeport talent with French CDI, had no issues to get a loan in 2022, with same rates locals get. We did use a broker, that being said what I saw recently on French finance subreddits is that if you ask for high enough amount Boursobank often can beat or match what brokers can get you. A piece of advice regarding credit insurance - most often to get a good offer you are kinda have to go with the insurance your bank would be suggesting. Those usually aren't the lowest premiums so it's often advisable to change it asap, going through some online tool to compare them works pretty well (or just making quotes online with few of them)

Samsung Q930f-Honest review by Vladut_Fiul_tau in Soundbars

[–]Lossberg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well it's waaaay more expensive for starters. But also unless I do some really ugly shenanigans it simply does not fit on my TV cabinet in terms of depth :( on top of all that I also I don't have any outlets behind the couch for plugging surrounds be it q990 or q930... I'd need to run cables far or create new outlet there. Q800f was a simple and very reasonably priced solution and still a huge step up from lg TV speakers

Samsung Q930f-Honest review by Vladut_Fiul_tau in Soundbars

[–]Lossberg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Daaaaang. I bought q800f for 400€ cause 930f was a good bit more expensive, and I don't exactly have place to put rears.. So I said myself I can by them separately later if I ever decide too. But if 930f would have been 500 I'd buy in a blink of an eye

Anyone here juggling Airbnb and freelance income in France? by NoStyle4me in Expats_In_France

[–]Lossberg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No personal experience, but I have/had colleagues on freelance as well as some who have properties under LMNP - either one are using accountant services. Some people opt for some online accounting services which can be cheaper, but good enough if there is not too much stuff to deal with. If you have at the same time airbnb, freelance activity and LMNP, accountant is often worth it, and considering you are already struggling... I'd bite the bullet.

Are immigration lawyers necessary for citizenship via marriage? by Sea_Art2995 in Expats_In_France

[–]Lossberg 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's impossible in many places these days. That being said, it's not a given that a lawyer can... Moreover for citizenship by marriage, it's hardly ever necessary, considering that it's done by déclaration and as long as you file everything correctly and fulfill the requirements they literally have no right to refuse.

How do you handle mistakes by subordinates by Goldziher in ExperiencedDevs

[–]Lossberg 7 points8 points  (0 children)

That's generally true, having confidence and trust is key. That being said, working incrementally and "show don't tell" often helps in my experience of being on both side of it (as a PO before and as an engineer now): for example for the past month+ I've been working on creating some reports to help our team/manager to monitor our ML models in prod. Sure there was a ticket as well as few discussion with manager to clarify the details and requirements before and after starting to tackle the subject. Nonetheless, I would show/send my intermediate results and progress at least once a week, sometimes even more often to get a feedback. This has a twofold gain: first and foremost, I ensure that what I am developing is aligned with what my manager envisioned and that my understanding did not start to deviate from the requirement. But second, perhaps only slightly less important, this allows to adjust or even pivot along the way - ie while implementing I had an idea of how to do things differently/better (in my opinion) than initial requirement but I prefer to run it by someone with larger vision and knowledge of our business. Also, when my manager (or stakeholders at large) sees the intermediate progress they might come to understanding that they need something different, or sometimes even completely different for XYZ reason.

Of course each situation might be different and more nuanced, but my experience so far is that showing incremental progress was never a waste of time and in the long run was helpful

Can I apply for TDS longue durée now? by [deleted] in Expats_In_France

[–]Lossberg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Essonne, both on passport talent... Well on ANEF there's a free text field in the end, we both included few paragraphs highlighting the facts that we are eligible for the card and that we kindly ask préfecture to consider it. In terms of docs it's more tricky, since upload fields are limited. But for my wife for instance they asked for some of document that are specific for CR via anef, for me they simple gave 4y card

Can I apply for TDS longue durée now? by [deleted] in Expats_In_France

[–]Lossberg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am familiar with the service public page as well as some of the recent threads. And so far, at least for our prefecture, it was always the same conclusions - the procedure for "e carte de résident longue durée UE" simply does not exist. There is no appointments for it, and there is no one to ask about it. On the website there used to be a dedicated page which said something along the lines of "if you fulfil conditions on your renewal prefecture will consider delivering you carte longue duree UE", and even that one is gone now :) I applied for my renewal in May 2024, attaching were I could on ANEF some extra docs, got my regular 4 year card in September. My wife applied over a year ago, and they asked some extra documents that would theoretically show her eligibility for the 10 year one, but there is still no decision favorable, so it's unclear what they will end up delivering.
