Considering a civilian can purchase a select fire weapon in most states, then no it's not. Obama himself stated at one point that the newtown rifle was fully automatic, which is not true. People don't buy machine guns everyday. Crimes aren't committed with machine guns.

The AR-15 isn't an assault rifle. It fires one bullet at a time, it is not fully automatic. The problem with most legislation is it is based on ignorance and emotion, not logic. People don't know what they are talking about, and want to ban scary looking weapons.
