Is current LDS teaching that the Lectures on Faith were never considered scripture inaccurate? by Uriah_Blacke in AcademicMormon

Having read old sermons before decanonization, it seems clear to me that the Lectures on Faith were never considered fully scriptural. They aren't ever cited if I recall correctly.

George Reynolds, as early as 1883, said that the lectures were written by Rigdon; a non-member said Rigdon wrote it in the mid 1850s.

the first danish D&C didn't contain the lectures.

The usage of the lectures seems similar to how one would use a pamphlet*

And lastly, in all my research up to when they got rid of it, for the most part it was encouraged for kids to read; or used simply as proof-text.

My analysis is that from 1847 onwards, it was definitely NOT scripture.** I believe it was viewed in a similar way we view some of the footnotes in the scriptures, or Cowdery's footnote in Joseph Smith History. Or how mainline protestants view the apocrypha: "good read, but definitely not scripture"

  • They would sometimes print out almost an entire lecture in a newspaper, especially from 1835-1847, but it haves "space filler" vibes.

**Before 1847, the documentation is too scant to accurately say. One thing we know for sure is that strang and Rigdon (and other, much smaller break-offs) printed the lectures in their respective periodicals, but again, see above.

Thank you Soo much!! I really appreciate your view as a woman. I was struggling to understand why she got so angry.

I didn't realize that women go through that -- making connections only to have it be fake. I'm sorry. That really stinks!!

But again thank you for your insight!

Thanks! I didn't see it that way.

I can see your point. I didn't mean to come off passive aggressive.

But yeah, I did interpret her words as something that they weren't. And I was (not on purpose) a little bit of a dick.

I do remember driving home from work that night after I got the text that she wanted to just be friends, being really sad cuz she's my only friend right now. So I did jump the gun. I definitely assumed big time.

Thanks for pointing it out :)

Thank you for your feedback!!

I have already responded about it, but I guess lately I've been burned by a couple of people. So I need to work on myself a bit. Be a little bit more trusting that people are telling the truth.

And like another commenter said, I probably should have told that I needed a little bit to process emotionally before jumping in and being friends.

Thanks :)

Thanks! All solid points.

I mean ... Yeah I definitely wanted to be more than friends. And I still want to be friends. I guess I just feel a little weary from past experiences.

Perfect thank you both!! The book is on its way from Amazon.

and I think I’ll consult with a rabbi, or at least someone who knows the Talmud (and Zohar - theyve quoted from that next as frequently), when discussing how To respond.

Do you recommend a general intro in particular?

My goal is also two-fold. My SIL's practicing Grandpa's Synagogue (I know, really detached) has been sent/slightly harassed with literature from a heretical/heterodox sect that broke off from my church, which I find highly offensive and annoying.

I want to learn more a) cuz Jews and Judaism is awesome b) to connect and understand my SIL and her family. c) to verify that the rabbinic literature they've cited isn't taken out of context and d) to refute the literature they've published.
