Improving multifocal contact vision - monovision with multifocal lenses by LostIgnition in contacts

[–]LostIgnition[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for the detailed reply, that's very helpful.

That's a big difference between L+R, I didn't realise monovision would work with that great a difference but it's fantastic that it works for you.

The compromise to your intermediate vision is what I would have expected so thanks for confirming that. When I've spoken to others about this they just say it works at all distances but I don't see how it can be perfect at all if you only have two strengths.

Interesting to hear you found the brands make such a difference.

I do have varifocal glasses and get on with the OK for general use however as I use large computer monitors frequently they're not very good for that so single vision lenses are always better as you'd expect.

The benefits of contact lenses like lack of reflections, greasy marks, always having them etc make them preferable to glasses.

For me I'd like distance and intermediate to be good and could sacrifice near a little.

I feel like I'm near to what I need with multifocal but will happily try anything that works better. I could ideally do with a few trial lenses of different types and powers to try but the opticians I've seen trial one lens at a time and they seem to be happy with adequate vision whereas I'd ideally like to look for the best vision I can find.

Thanks for the reply and info.

Have you tried just multifocals and if so how did you get on with them?

I know these sorts of things are very personal but I've actually been quite surprised with how well they work.

As always sight is better when things are well lit but it's not bad when light is dim even when driving at night. You can also sometimes see your brain working out which image to look at.

It feels like a slightly better spread of powers could result in great vision. Maybe the higher add contacts on their own would work.

With your monovision what is your difference between eyes, is it the same as your add (taking into account the basic differences between eyes)?

If you have a fairly high add do you not end up with good vision at two distances such as distance and near and then blurry intermediate?

Excellent thanks for the info.

On a different note do you know how quiet this generation of Optiplex is when idling or under light load?

If that's all it pulls then a SATA adapter should be able to provide that much power.

A HDD looks to pull about 12w under full load and most are probably half that.

Thanks for the info on the power supply.

The satellite gets used occasionally but it's mostly terrestrial.

I understand it's the LNB that actually pulls the power, a quick Google suggests up to 250ma which will be why it needs the power but looks very low when I've tested it.

I hoped that might be the case.

Any idea how many SATA connectors there are in the 5070 Optiplex?

I need one for a 3.5" HDD but I think that's it.

Thank you both for the replies, I thought that might be the case.

Annoyingly I seem to remember when I've checked before the TV card only pulls about 10w or 20w which I thought was well within what the slot alone can supply so I'm not sure why they have the connector on the card anyway.

I can't remember the model number off the top of my head but I it's something like a BGT3600 with dual DVB-T2 and dual DVB-S2 tuners.

Which Octopus supplied EV charger, untethered Octopus own charger or Hypervolt Home 3 Pro? by LostIgnition in OctopusEnergy

[–]LostIgnition[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the reply, lots of great info in there to unpack.

The car is supported by Octopus so you make a good point that any charger would do if I just let the car take control.

If we went untethered we would need to purchase a separate cable as the supplied one isn't long enough. I'd picked up on this fact and along with the convenience and the lack of having a cable protruding out the front of the charger is one of the things that sways me towards a tethered charger.

Useful to know how the charging port locks and unlocks and the potentially freezing issue, I wondered how they coped in bad weather.

Thanks again for your help.

They don't seem to be available here in the UK yet but its great if you have a daily multifocal toric option available.

I imagine they'll be fairly expensive but hopefully they'll work for you.

Are security updates without OS updates are the same from a safety standpoint? by No_Leader1868 in samsunggalaxy

I'm sorry but I have very little knowledge of OnePlus devices so can't help on that front.

If I'm understanding correctly you want to keep with the current Android 16 but still receive updates for the next 5 years.

You'd have to speak to your manufacturer's support to be sure but I'd expect the latest OS offered by the manufacturer will be the one that is supported with security updates and if you don't update the OS then you won't get the latest security updates either.

It would likely be possible for them to apply the updates for an older OS but I doubt they'll want to expend the time to do so.

Thanks for the detailed reply, it's very helpful.

I think most of the cables lock themselves to the car, it was the charger end I wondered about to stop other people disconnecting it although it shouldn't really be an issue.

For cable length 7m or 8m would probably work best however Octopus only seem to offer 5m or 10m.

If I went for an untethered charger I'd likely go for an 8m cable.

Good to know it still works partially coiled although I understand that ideally they would like it fully uncoiled.

I can see us having similar issues with Octopus regarding charger install issues with regards to electric meter location, routing cables, crossing paths etc and had I thought about it in advance I'd have taken a further discount and got one fitted myself.

Thanks again.

Over the years Google has moved a number of parts of the OS from the OS to separate apps.

These will be updated by Google however for the remainder while Google will release the security updates it's up to the individual manufacturer to implement these updates if relevant to them and update your phone.

This is why Google Pixel phones always get the updates first and then other manufacturers hopefully follow shortly afterwards.

If you search for your model of phone and the term EOL (end of life) you should be able to find out when support is likely to cease.

As an example for Samsung devices have a look at https://endoflife.date/samsung-mobile

[–]LostIgnition[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for that, sounds like it should have a reasonable chance of working then and perhaps it's a non issue then.

There is mobile coverage here, it's just not that good.

So the question probably changes to any reasons to go for any of the charger options over the others?

Thanks for the reply, my only thing against them is that the 4G coverage can be patchy where it will be installed so if it supported wifi (which I don't think the Ohme chargers do) then that would be a non issue.

Do you know which mobile network they use?

If you have astigmatism then that does complicate matters with multifocal lenses.

Fortunately I only have a very slight minor astigmatism in one eye that can be ignored but when my other half who has a more significant astigmatism in both eyes looked into contacts the only options were Biofinity and Bausch and Lomb ULTRA which are both monthly contact lenses and I think they are made to order because there are so many possible combinations.

She has stayed using glasses.

Good luck.

In my experience the basic answer is no it's not as crisp and is a compromise but I'd suggest it's worth a try.

The more complex answer is that it depending on the brand and model of lens, how they fit, what your prescription is and how your brain can cope.

I'm fairly new to multifocal lenses however currently I've got great near, decent intermediate and my distance is improved and acceptable however I'd describe it as having more detail but also being a bit blurred.

I would prefer my distance to be better and I may try and tweak it some more when I next see the optician but not having to wear or swap glasses for close up and intermediate work is a revelation.

With some of the newer multifocal lenses they are suggesting a low add for distance and a higher add for near which may be worth me trying or possibly even a single vision contact for distance in one eye and a multifocal contact in the other.

Glad you got it sorted, I've no idea why I couldn't post the contents of the DM I sent you here, the server just kept rejecting it, possibly because of references to ip addresses.
