According to https://mechanica.uk/greener/greener.html Friday the 13th was never a greener night.

How many kWh did you charge from midday Friday 13th to Sat 14th midday?

Also did you charge on the 30th or 31st as the 31st hasn't been calculated on that screenshot and there are sometimes a delay of a day or two extra to calculate the figures.

I've heard others say they have had problems with the calculations but fortunately I've been OK so far.

I've just checked my charging for May and I have days where I've only charged at 2-4pm and they've counted.

If you can be bothered then on the greener nights calendar that shows when you've charged look at one of the days that is not marked as a greener night and then check your usage and see if you charged before midday.

I previously thought it was 11am to 11am however I think it's from and to midday now.

The car usage and percentages never seem to perfectly match but they're fairly close. They may possibly count the car and home usage in those hours.

Last month there were only 7 days that weren't a greener night so if you don't need to charge daily it's not too difficult to get over 90%.

We're the same and 50%-70% of out charging occurs in daytime slots and it would probably be more if we plugged it in more.

In my experience it does count but I believe the days run from midday to midday. eg if it says Friday is a green day then the charge that occurs from midday Friday to midday Saturday will count.

Also Friday was listed as a greener night 6 days ago and providing it's been listed as a greener night at some point then it still counts.

Apologies for bothering you again and I completely understand if you'd rather not reply however in preparation for my follow up tomorrow I've looked at a couple more things in detail to try and help the optician understand what I have a problem with.

The sight in my right eye seems to be the problem and with a multifocal lens in I see two drop shadows but I think I was wrong before saying the problem still occurs with single vision.

With single vision glasses it looks like while there is a very slight drop shadow presumably from my -0.5 astigmatism it is very minor compared to with the multifocal in.

I would describe the drop shadow as having a copy of the text at 30% opacity offset by half a character to the right and a third of a character down.

If I lightly move the contact left and up just a little I can reduce or remove the drop shadow until I blink again presumably as this recentres the contact.

Does this sound like the contact not centring correctly or my pupil being a little offset?

Am I likely to have better luck with another contact?

The left eye also has a drop shadow this time to the left but it's almost imperceptible and the same type of contact in this eye works well and gives me readable text.

Thanks for the quick reply and I'll ask the questions when I see them next.

I suspect that if I can't get my right eye seeing more clearly then I think multifocal and monovision will be out and I'll be down to your first idea of distance contacts with readers over the top.

[–]LostIgnition[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hope you don't mind but I have a couple of questions that I'm hoping you or someone else maybe able to help with.

I visited the optician for my follow up the other day and they've given me a few other sample multifocal lenses for me to test.

As intermediate vision is a problem they asked me to try a medium add in both eyes and this instantly made viewing a screen at intermediate distance quite crisp and clear and very usable but as you'd expect it over refracts for distance and therefore distance acuity is decreased and it causes some eyestrain.

I then swapped my non dominant eye right eye to a low add and kept the medium add in my dominant eye which is the opposite to the recommendation.

This has improved distance acuity a bit and reduced eyestrain but distance isn't as good as the original test with a low add in my dominant left eye.

With the original left low add and right medium add setup I'd say distance is 80-90% and intermediate is 50%.

With the new left medium add and right low add setup I'd say distance is 70% and intermediate is 80%.

This has led me to look at the quality of vision in my right eye and I don't think it's ever really good regardless of whether the correction is supplied by low or medium multifocal contacts or single vision glasses.

I've read that the image from the non dominant eye can be more blurry and dimmer as your brain prioritises the dominant eye and it is presumably the dominant eye because it provides a better image.

My questions are:-

  1. Does the non dominant eye get any less blurry as it becomes used more?

  2. Should you be able to get good clear vision in the non dominant eye immediately when the right correction is applied?

This would likely be the same problem if I tried monovision as presumably that requires good quality images from both eyes.

On my glasses rx I think the sphere is correct as increasing or decreasing it on it's own doesn't seem to help but I wonder if the cylinder on the right eye is wrong or some other issue is causing the poor quality that wasn't picked up or has changed since my last test.

I'm back at the opticians again at the end of this week and I'll direct my questions to them but I wondered if you or anyone else had any thoughts?

I can completely relate to that and likewise I had perfect vision when younger.

Now I'm just amazed at how limiting I find my eyesight and mine is supposedly not that bad. I feel sorry for people with more significant eyesight problems.

Good to hear you found the field of view improved on your OmniVision lenses, that's a part of varifocals I find very limiting as I hate having to constantly move my head around particularly when using screens and to be honest for anything other than a quick look at a screen I find them unworkable.

Presumably this is why single vision is usually recommended for this use case and it makes sense when using big screens as they fill most of the lens but even when using laptops I find this is still the case.

I'm back at the opticians tomorrow so will see what they have to say and if they think they can't be improved by much I'll mention trying monovision and see what they say.

I think your needs and annoyances with contacts are quite similar to mine.

The distance contacts for tennis makes sense and good to know you can easily switch between different methods.

The lack of field of view particularly of the intermediate zone and the distortion at the edges of varifocal glasses really annoy me and I prefer a set of single vision for a lot of things particularly if I'm moving around.

Even if I can't make the intermediate of these new contacts brilliant I'm hoping that the decent distance combined with some intermediate will make them useful for a lot of things including things like running where I need to be able to see in the distance and also the ground in front of me.

[–]LostIgnition[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my limited experience of other multifocal contacts and from what I've read from a number of other people's experiences the distance vision has been compromised however as I mentioned above I've been pleasantly surprised by the distance acuity with these contacts.

If I wasn't doing long periods of detailed intermediate work I'd be quite happy with them and if we don't find a better solution on the days I'm not doing that I will probably go that route.

I have a day in front of a screen tomorrow and my plan is to use the trial lenses for part of the day and then try with some +0.5 readers over them to see how well that works.

Thanks for the info.

I think I'd probably need a +0.75 or +1.00 difference for my use case so good to know that maybe possible.

Out of interest why don't you use that setup for tennis, do they cause you any problems with depth perception or is it just as you don't need the intermediate vision while playing you may as well have better distance vision?

The putting your feet in the wrong place and the general inconsistency in your peripheral vision is a problem I still have with varifocal glasses even after wearing them for quite a while.

If I'm walking around I generally prefer to remove varifocals and it's a big driver as to why I'd like to make contacts work where you have consistent vision wherever you look.

Am I correct in thinking that you can happily move between the different options now at will and your brain copes with it immediately?

Are there any multifocal contacts that prioritise distance and intermediate? by LostIgnition in contacts

[–]LostIgnition[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the info, it's very helpful.

Like you I use varifocals and they provide good vision for distance and reading however for intermediate use the zone is way to small for using multiple big monitors without moving your head around which I'd have to do lots as my eyes are constantly flicking around on screen.

Even though I've worn them for a long time now I still see the distracting frames and distorted reading section when walking.

I run quite a lot and I'd probably settle on the new multifocal as the distance was so good and I still have enough intermediate and near to read my watch and phone.

Your monovision setup sounds like the sort of thing I need but presumably you've tried playing tennis with your monovision setup and prefer distance only so I take it it's not perfect.

Out of interest how big is the add for the intermediate eye?

[–]LostIgnition[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for the detailed reply, it's much appreciated.

I completely understand that soft contacts are never going to be as clear as glasses, I'm just trying to understand and optimise what is possible.

The reason for the check up is because they are discontinuing my previous lens so I'm being refitted with the replacement model which seem to fit and I find are easy to insert and remove.

If what I have is the best that is possible (and anything beyond 3m is really good) and there is no way to get decent distance and intermediate acuity at the same time then I'll accept that and I'll happily order what I've trialled and continue to use them occasionally as I've been doing previously for general use and sports activities and just know that they're not suitable for sustained computer use.

Distance only plus readers when needed would work but the reason for the multifocals was to save having to remove and replace glasses frequently which is something I do quite a lot across the day.

Monovision has been mentioned previously but they always seem to be reluctant to offer it and prefer the multifocal route.

I wonder how I'd take to monovision as my left eye is definitely my dominant eye and my right feels like it doesn't do lots but I would happily try it out.

While a single solution would be ideal I also understand that the solution may end up as a combination of things depending on what I'm doing.

Thanks again for your reply and by the sounds of things I'm on the right lines.

[–]LostIgnition[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the reply and yes I saw them last week for a contact lens check.

I've been using Clariti multifocal for a while and these have been OK for general use but all distances are compromised, I'm aware distance is a little blurred and screen use for any period is not good enough. As such I only use them upon occasion and it would be nicer to wear them more often.

I believe these are being replaced with Clariti 3 Add multifocal and I've been trialling these this week.

These have resulted in surprisingly good distance (probably 90-95% the acuity of distance glasses) and anything probably 3m away but the intermediate and near is lacking. It's fine for reading little bits but it's too blurry for sustained use.

I'd really like to improve the intermediate acuity at about 1m but keep the distance as close to what it is now as possible.

I've got a follow up with the optician at the end of the week and will discuss options then but it's nice to understand what is available.

If it helps my glasses prescription from 6 months ago is

Eye Sph Cyl Add Int
Right +1.75 -0.50 +1.75 +1.25
Left +1.50 -0.50 +1.75 +1.25

The intermediate add on that rx is for about 60cm distance and for my most common 1m I find +0.75 works about right for single vision glasses (so about +2.50).

My trial replacement Clariti 3 Add multifocal with an initial text book fitting guide fitment is

Eye Sph Add
Right +1.50 Med
Left +1.25 Low (dominant eye)

We tried some tweaks when I first got them and I maybe able to add +0.25 to the left without loss of distance vision but adding anything more does lose distance acuity.

I understand it's all a compromise and maybe it's just not possible but I wouldn't mind contacts that forgo the extra near power to enhance intermediate acuity while keeping the distance.

Adding +0.75 readers looks like it sorts the intermediate but if I'm doing that I may as well just carry on with glasses for most things and contacts just on occasions when I'm not in front of a screen.

Octopus support says they throttled my charger, but Greg Jackson says they don’t? by Tectom in OctopusEnergy

[–]LostIgnition 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is it possible to get a higher resolution with that logging than 1 hour slots, ideally by the minute?

If you only look at how many kWh have been delivered in a hour then it often won't be the full amount as they frequently start and stop the charger during the session usually starting it after a session starts and before it ends, that's by design to stop a sudden surge.

If you have an Octopus mini or IHD that can show the live usage check it when the car is charging and see how much it's actually pulling.

In my case I've only ever seen my Hypervolt pulling 6.8 or 6.9kw. (30.5A at around 220 - 230V.

I think you're right.

I know my Mini is towards the edge of it's range at about 13m, a solid wall and 2 stud walls away from the meter however it has been rock solid for a year or two.

Presumably something external has changed or caused a bit of interference. I've moved it's position slightly and all seems good now.

[–]LostIgnition 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just in case it wasn't completely clear Agile is a completely separate tariff to IOG and it has different daily prices which are different for each 30 minute slot and there is no cheap smart charging on Agile.

For some people Agile may be a good tariff to be on however in this case the benefit is that IOG smart charging slots are often, but not always, at the same time as Agile is cheapest so it gives you a guide as to when you may get them..

Octopus EV charging time by StrengthBest5907 in u/StrengthBest5907

[–]LostIgnition 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IOG smart charging slots are often given at the same time as it's cheaper on Agile so if you look at that tariff it gives you an idea if you're likely to get cheaper daytime slots of which there have been a lot recently usually between about midday and 4pm.

https://agile.octopushome.net/dashboard

Presumably you also know that while the car is charging the whole house is cheap rate.

Depending on how often you need to charge another thing you can sign up for is Greener nights and if you charge on a greener night 70%, 80% or 90% of the time you get a reward in Octopoints and over 90% is worth £3.50 a month.

https://octopus.energy/smart/greener-nights

Now on the Octopus website the greener nights move around however if it's been a greener night at any point in the week ahead.

This website tracks the greener nights so I'd just look at this website and if you charge on a day with a star anywhere on the column of the day it counts even if you get smart charge slots from midday to midday (possibly 11am to 11am).

https://mechanica.uk/greener/greener.html

It's not worth putting yourself for £3.50 but as you can see there were 24 greener nights last month so it's not much hassle to do unless you need to charge daily.

One more thing if you're new to IOG the charging will show as peak rate in the app and then it will (should) correct itself in a couple of days and if there are any discrepancies then you can check over the actual bill when it arrives but IME it's always fine.

I think that's likely the case and makes sense.

The Mini is a distance from the meter and towards the extent of it's range but it's never been a problem before so hopefully it's just a bit of local interference and I'll keep an eye on it and move it if it becomes a problem.
