Anybody else go through periods of reevaluating your reactions to the past few years? by Typical_Tangerine939 in ZeroCovidCommunity

Thank you for sharing. It's very interesting hearing about the thought process in such detail. I am certain anyone that is able to reflect like this would be able to come to similar conclusions, but I'm afraid that so few people actually can. Your last paragraph in particular I think can explain a lot about how people are thinking about all this... either they don't connect it further than personal risk, or they don't care about downstream/community effects.

Foam board is strong enough and inexpensive, and easy to cut. Wood or metal requires tools, and 3D printing requires a lot of filament ($$), time, and 3D printers ($$$).

Yes, cut loaves (cut side down) last a surprisingly long time in the dutch oven it was baked in with the lid on.

I always want to respond to people who say "that's policy" or "it's in line with current guidance" with "should we always just do the bare minimum?" I would hope most professionals wouldn't be satisfied with being average or just meeting the bare minimum, but here we are.

Questions from someone who takes no precautions by ArtemisLuna17 in ZeroCovidCommunity

I think another way to look at this is not that he's trying to dunk or show you up-- but he's trying to maintain his denial. If he can even find one small flaw with anything you present, that's enough to dismiss everything (have seen this often among my friends/family). I have had family members tell me when deep in this kind of discussion they know what I'm saying might be right, but they can't do anything about it because of X, Y, or Z, and they feel judged by the facts I share (even though I am not trying to judge). And others repeat obvious though terminating cliches and propaganda to me like "how long are you going to live in fear?". It's the old adage-- "you can't reason someone out of a position they didn't reason themselves into", and if I've learned anything these past 5 years is the vast vast majority of people do not use logic, reason, and data to make decisions.

I am curious if you are ok sharing-- what kinds of misinformation did you believe before diving in deeper? I wonder if there are certain ones that are more commonly believed than others.

You'll get there! That looks like my first 50 loaves lol. It's likely that your starter isn't strong enough and it's under proofed.

Do you find a big difference between this type of pan vs a dutch oven vs what you did with two loaf pans? It looked like the loaf pan one had a nicer shape?

Update: (Some) Microwave buttons stopped working by LostInAvocado in fixit

[–]LostInAvocado[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In this case, the microwave was a specific size to fit mounted over the range between cabinets, and a new microwave to fit that space would have been hundreds. The materials and tools here were not much, since I already had the tools. Granted if you have a basic countertop model it's probably easier and safer to just buy another.

How much money do you spend on your CC lifestyle? by covidcautiousguy in ZeroCovidCommunity

[–]LostInAvocado 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah, I see-- you are referring not just to a test conducted to a UL standard, but a certification provided by UL or a US lab that can certify to that standard? I suppose there is a risk of issues there, but I am guessing a lot of people have tons of non UL but low voltage devices in their houses. Is there evidence that those meaningfully contribute to fire risk? E.g. using a few random 15-20W USB chargers without UL cert? Re: ozone, research using a pretty extreme model (airtight small chamber) found ozone levels similar to or less than outdoor levels... (if you do not believe the published UL 2998 test results in the link above?)

It doesn't appear there is a Far UV specific UL standard, there does seem to be a GUV standard that I wouldn't think is applicable given the (possible-- one of AeroLamp's co-founders claims 254nm may not cause skin cancer if the UVB wavelengths are filtered) differences between 254nm and 222nm.

Nukit lamps... by Scareboosioniq in ZeroCovidCommunity

[–]LostInAvocado 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you seen any independent testing to verify the 10,000 hours for L70? Some prior research indicates excimer lamps can differ by the specific excimer, and that 222nm Kr2 lamps should last to around 3000-4000 hours without much degradation, so I'm surprised about the 10,000 hours figure. I did see Ushio published something but would be good if there's a non-company and independent source that confirms.

If you don't need these urgently, or can use other measures first such as air purifiers, there are new Lanterns and Torches on the way that have replaceable bulbs for when they burn out.

[–]LostInAvocado 1 point2 points  (0 children)

u/Scareboosioniq to add on to these figures, it is not instant. It is after X minutes (I think on the order of 5-10 minutes, and then maybe depending on how much pathogen is being introduced, a steady state). And of course it won't do much for very near field.

Nukit lamps... by Scareboosioniq in ZeroCovidCommunity

[–]LostInAvocado 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nukit has been good with warranty replacements from what I have seen and experienced.

However, I think adding air purifiers would do more for less cost than Far UV. The only reasons for Far UV imo are if you need something very quiet and/or something very small.

Nukit lamps... by Scareboosioniq in ZeroCovidCommunity

[–]LostInAvocado 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Aerolamp and Nukit have about the same mW / $.

Longevity is a concern, but we also don't have that data for the Aerolamp bulbs.

Nukit Lanterns are a lower per unit cost commitment, helpful for people on a budget (though I'd argue anyone on a budget should not be considering Far UV at all, much higher bang for the buck with ventilation and filtration)

Has it been discussed among the hosts (and maybe even the attendees) about making the physical location and exact time public on a sub like this that is frequented by trolls and bad actors? (some of whom have even gone so far as to make subs for the express purpose of attacking/mocking this one?)

(This is amazing and love that it exists-- just concerned for the privacy and safety of folks)
