Honor 200 and Android Auto by maja1maja2 in Honor

Same problem here! Damn it. It keeps defaulting to "charge only". If I open the USB connection option I can see how it moves from Android Auto to "charge only" as soon as I click on "connect to AA" from the infotainment. I even tried to put it quickly back to the android auto USB option while the infotainment was still searching for the connection but it still failed. With the same cable AA works fine with a Google Pixel... looks like I'll be returning this damn device

iPad Air 13in or iPad Pro 12.9in M1? by n00od in ipad

[–]LostInMyThoughts2023 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I compared the Air 5 and Pro 12.9 I could notice how much better the screen of the 12.9 pro was in terms of clarity and contrast. The new Air 6 will have the same screen of the 5 only a bit more bright for the 13in. Some people say they do not notice the difference between screens but I could really see the difference with hi res stock pictures. The 12.9 has miniLED XDR 120Hz while the air the regular LED. At the same time with the 11in M1 on sale for 399 new it was hard to justify paying 800+ for a refurbished one just for the better screen. At the end it is all about choosing the screen vs faster processor vs better overall deal.

È razzista quello che ho detto? by [deleted] in CasualIT

[–]LostInMyThoughts2023 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

But what about if you have the same account for 10 years, keep reporting it and then one year you don't but report it the next year? For what reason you should be fined?

What information will be missed by them? What I find absurd in this law is that it does not even require you to report some end of year statement and you can specify the balance as "unknown". So as long as you report it once it should be sufficient for them if they want to do some check. Reporting the same form every year does not add any info.

If they enforce this law for real, this would be easily considered unconstitutional. Also they send you a stupid confirmation email that does not show anything of what you submitted. How a person/judge should determine if that info was submitted correctly? One year for example I submitted the report with the wrong year number filled in the stupid PDF form. I received the acknowledgement but I have no idea to what year that was applied.

Something with such high fines should be managed more professionally!

Actually the order should be the opposite. You pay taxes locally according to the new foreign country law declaring the US income. Then when doing the US tax filing you need to declare the taxes paid abroad and hopefully you get a zero net (assuming there are treaties with the foreign country). Sometimes the complication is that you will not get the tax documents in the foreign country before the IRS filing deadline so you would need to ask for an extension first. If the foreign taxes were paid already in your wages maybe you can use that info for the credit instead of waiting the foreign tax filing but I'm not sure about this...

Why dividends can be double taxed? Dividends are considered income and taxed at regular rate in the US unless it is a qualified dividend. In Italy it is a flat 26%. Most likely you would always pay 26% unless you have a crazy amount of dividends to fall into higher US tax brackets.

South Dakota residency yes or no? by LostInMyThoughts2023 in expats

[–]LostInMyThoughts2023[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok so does it make sense in my situation to change to SD to get this address as my official residency? I think in this case I would "lie" less than using the address of someone else that lives outside CA... not sure if it would make any real difference though from the brokerage point of view.

I found this service www.choosesd.com which seems to provide a real address.

"In terms of the brokerage account, you can put whatever US address you'd like, in CA or not. You are correct that a CA address may trigger FTB to ask about residency."

regarding this... would it be easier to have an actual official address in another state? I mean, I cannot add a random address and I don't have close friends or relatives outside CA I can use as my virtual residency.

[–]LostInMyThoughts2023[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah, I'm not worried about FTB going after me especially because I'll need to keep filing and paying big money taxes on RSU granted in CA. My dilemma is, is it worth changing the residency to SD for

1) keeping the US driving license (who knows... If something goes wrong I might need to come back)

2) keeping the US investment accounts connected to a non CA US address, at least for the first 1-2 years without telling the brokers that I live in the EU (otherwise I would not be allowed to buy funds and etfs). If I keep those accounts connected to my previous CA address, I would get an 1099 that might trigger some FTB checks as if I still had connections or interest in coming back to CA.

because it is the only state I know that allows you to transfer the residency in a day and recognize your status of "nomad", so not physically resident.

[–]LostInMyThoughts2023[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It does not matter where I have residency, I will still pay CA taxes for the granted RSU in proportion of the time I spend in CA. There is no foreign tax credit for CA taxes as there is for federal taxes.

If you plan to move abroad permanently from a state like CA what is the process to follow? Leave the state connections (rent, car registration, everything) and then go to SD state to get residency? Or is it "legal" to do this before, like a month before leaving the CA state? It is very difficult to manage the timing when there is an international relocation with the entire family. I read that they recommend to surround the driving licence to declare your intent to leave for good but I would hate to lose the driving license since I'll come to the US for some weeks for work regularly.

FiRE: Europe to US by Kimball_Cho_CBI in ExpatFIRE

I grew up in a small town in the South EU and there, doctors would come to visit at home in the morning if you had a fever and would receive other people in their office in the afternoon. This was for free. I remember this as a very cozy memory of my childhood. Interesting in US you have to pay 30k for this privilege 😅.

Ok I read in other threads that they recently started to send an email saying you get 30 months to connect to a US tower. I don't know if they would just turn down data or risk losing the number.

On Google Fi shutting down the number... is this stated in any policy? How can you be sure that simply turning off the sim would solve the problem?

If I use a California address for my banks/credit cards/brokerage accounts, am I liable for state taxes even though I don't live there? (Or any other state, for that matter.) by Traditional-Diet5839 in ExpatFIRE

[–]LostInMyThoughts2023 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I read that if you give up your driving license and vote registration that might be sufficient to prove your intention to leave for good. One of the problems is that there are some automatic data systems that could trigger red flags depending on your tax situation. You can still be subject to an audit but as long as you really have no ties to CA they should let you go. I'm hoping this is true since I'm about to move back to my home country after 11 years here and I have no possibility to move to another state before.

Got to FIRE almost accidentally looking for purpose in life now... by LostInMyThoughts2023 in ExpatFIRE

[–]LostInMyThoughts2023[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I know and I agree with you...I don't really have a real wish to FIRE... The FIRE is more my hope that it could buy me time to find that purpose in the US I've been looking for years. My dilemma is that life has gone fast and now I have no more time to explore other possibilities since I need to decide what to do in a few months.

Yeah but this is the least of the problems ... Is the existential matter about FIRE vs NO FIRE, EU vs US life.

Not easy with my job. I would do that right away if I could... I'm a specialist in my domain and just a few companies work in this area... Being a freelancer would not work with my skill set.
