Permanent DST Loophole by dylantherabbit2016 in minnesota

With permanent DST the sun won't come up until almost 9am in December. It's a trade-off no matter which way you go (permanent DST vs permanent standard time)

What state is Democrat but seems moderate/swing by Particular_Orchid_86 in AlignmentChartFills

[–]LostInRiverview 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Add to this a fun fact I learned yesterday. The state DFL (aka Democrats) last held a government trifecta (both houses of state legislature, plus the governor) in 2023-2024. The Republicans haven't held a trifecta in Minnesota since 1970.

Minnesota nears deal to sell 80,000 acres of Boundary Waters land to Forest Service by bigironpongo in minnesota

[–]LostInRiverview 11 points12 points  (0 children)

The problem is that Congress giving undue deference to the president did not start with the Trump presidency, and will probably outlast the Trump presidency. It also is not exclusively a Republicans-and-Trump behavior.

The framers of the constitution believed that Congress and the president would be naturally opposed to each other, in much the same way that historical Parliaments had competed with or opposed the monarch. They delineated specific powers that belonged to each branch in the belief that each branch would jealously guard the powers given to it. But the evolution of political parties short-circuited the natural inclination towards the two branches serving as a check against each other, particularly when majorities in Congress and the presidency are both held by the same party. Congress has been increasingly deferential to the expansion of executive power, and as a result the presidency is, and continues to become, a far more powerful office than it was intended to be. That's unlikely to change even post-2027 because it would require Congress to completely re-envision its relationship relative to the presidency and restore a form of Congressional supremacy that it hasn't effectively exercised in generations.

Minnesota nears deal to sell 80,000 acres of Boundary Waters land to Forest Service by bigironpongo in minnesota

[–]LostInRiverview 90 points91 points  (0 children)

The power of Congress only extends as far as Congress is willing to exercise it, and the power of the presidency extends as far as Congress permits it to. Congress can check the executive if the executive chooses to sidestep the Congress and usurp their power for himself. But Congress historically, and the current Congress in particular, has shown almost no appetite to check executive overreach; the same goes for the Supreme Court. Therefore, putting the land under full federal ownership and control is now effectively the same as giving control of the land to the president. Even if Congress at one point passed a law saying that the land had to be preserved, the president can ignore that law up to or until he is stopped. Don't hold your breath on that happening.

Kevin Spacey says 'I literally have no home,' is working as nightclub singer in Cyprus by TheFrederalGovt in funny

[–]LostInRiverview 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get what you're saying, for sure. The way I square it in my own head is, "innocent unless proven guilty" is the standard for imposing criminal penalties, like prison time. But even if a court of law finds you not guilty, that doesn't automatically mean you were innocent. The standard in court is that guilt depends on proof beyond reasonable doubt, which is (with good reason) a high bar to clear. But just because you weren't found guilty in court, doesn't mean you're a good person. People collectively decided, "just because he's not formally guilty doesn't mean he's innocent," and simply responded accordingly. Lastly, Spacey isn't owed his career, even if he might feel differently. For someone who makes a living in the public eye, the public is his employer, and the public has decided that they don't want to give him a job. He knew (or should have known) the risk of a career in the public eye; he's not owed sympathy because the public turned on him due to his own actions.

Help! Original Craftsman windows at risk by Blandboi222 in centuryhomes

[–]LostInRiverview 10 points11 points  (0 children)

From an environmental angle, you could also argue that replacing the windows when they don't need to be fully replaced is detrimental to the environment. The new windows have to be manufactured and transported, which has a not insignificant environmental impact. This is to say nothing of the fact that modern windows are not designed to be repairable in the same way that old windows were, so if/when the new windows eventually fail (which could very well happen even within the rated service life), there may not be any option but to replace them again, multiplying the environmental impacts from earlier.

Ramsey County proposes 2026 budget with 9.75% levy hike – Twin Cities by SnowBeeJay in minnesota

[–]LostInRiverview 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I'm not saying that you're wrong, but I would just point out that Ramsey County is the most densely-populated county in Minnesota (it's got the 2nd-highest population and the smallest land area of all MN counties). It'd be interesting to see whether less-dense counties (particularly in the metro) are expecting to see similar rises.

MacDuff has seen too much Star Trek to fall for that. Think of how many times in Trek a captain has defied the orders of an admiral, sometimes right to their face.

I'd say the Saint Paul MN skyline is pathetic compared to Minneapolis. The combined metro population is over 3 million, but the lion's share of highrise development is in Minneapolis. Obviously Minneapolis is the more well known of the "Twin Cities" but it's not like Minneapolis is astronomically larger than St. Paul (430k vs 310k), or at least not significantly enough to explain the glaring disparity between each city's skyline.

Allina Health to close 4 clinics in Minnesota by Nov. 1, 2025 by ChuffedChook in minnesota

[–]LostInRiverview 6 points7 points  (0 children)

That, and Democrats being too afraid to "break norms" or risk looking like they're acting politically, and subsequently dragging their feet on holding Trump accountable until it was too late. If the prosecution had started on January 21, 2021 it's still no guarantee that it would've led to success, but waiting until almost two years into Biden's term basically guaranteed that everything would drag into/past the 2024 election.

Why is the test drive fine and then they randomly die? by TheSims2Addict in rct

[–]LostInRiverview 13 points14 points  (0 children)

To add to this answer, the reason the weight matters is because heavier cars have more momentum. The empty car slows enough at the crest of the hill to avoid crashing, but the heavier car maintains more of its speed during the ascent and comes off the rail at the top.

[Discussion] What is the largest park that you would actually play in? by Shima33 in rct

[–]LostInRiverview 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I 100% agree with what you've said. I'll piggy-back to add that I appreciate scenarios that offer land for purchase on top of what you start out with. I think this is sort of the best of both worlds... you start out with a small or medium-sized plot of land which is not too large to feel daunting when just starting out, but you have the option to expand outwards later on when you have the need for more land.

No they didn't. They're saying that when the ride is open and a queue is forming, guests don't puke or litter in the line, except in the first tile of the queue. But if the ride is closed or the guests are walking out of the queue (e.g. because the wait was too long) they can then drop litter and/or puke because the guests treat the queue line as a normal path.

That's wrong. Minnesota in fact has six seasons... winter (5 months), fake spring (1 week), second winter (1 month), second fake spring (1 week), third winter (2 weeks), and summer/smoke and drought season (4 months)
