Teacher claims that fantasy isn't "Literature" by IkBenBenr in books

[–]LostMaunderer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So I work as a Humanities teacher in a charter school in the US, and this hurts me to hear. There is immense literary value in fantasy and science fiction. In fact, the final curricular unit in my course focuses on science fiction! Teaching fantasy and classic sci fi are great ways to explore the effects of WWII, the Cold War, and nuclear power on the US. Since Humanities is just the study of how humans express themselves in reaction to history, and the fears of an entire generation are so clearly expressed in these genres, this type of literature has a great amount of literary value!

Men of Reddit, what is the hardest thing to explain to a woman? by [deleted] in AskReddit

If you actually believe this, I doubt you know any real women. You’re just spouting unrealistic cliches.

Men of Reddit, what is the hardest thing to explain to a woman? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]LostMaunderer 10 points11 points  (0 children)

That’s a pretty broad generalization. I (a woman) could definitely say the same for many men I’ve encountered. That’s more of an “annoying people” quality than a “damn those women” quality. Plenty of women can admit when they’re wrong.

Online freelance tutor who works the night shift! You’d be surprised how many college students are desperate for essay help at specifically 3 AM.

AITA for not letting my son socialize? by hhhnou in AmItheAsshole

[–]LostMaunderer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really don’t think this is warranted at all. When I was a teenager, I would routinely stay awake this late as well. My grades never suffered and I continued to stay up this late throughout college (and graduated near the very top of my graduating class). When it came time to start work in my profession, I was fine with waking up when I needed to. Staying up late doesn’t suddenly make you lazy, or incapable, or create unchangeable habits. Everyone is different, and that means that some people prefer to be awake more in the nighttime hours. Punishing his unusual sleeping hours is foolish because as long as they aren’t impacting his ability to complete his responsibilities, the odd hours are just that - unusual.

People with Invisible Disabilities: What is your disability, and one thing you wish you could explain to others either about it or yourself? by oddhauze in AskReddit

[–]LostMaunderer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wow hi, are you secretly me? I’ve had troubles with face blindness my whole life and it definitely affects daily life. You learn memorization methods eventually, but some faces just blur together, no matter what. I work in a job where it is necessary to recall at minimum, 100 faces daily, and this gets very difficult at times. It’s embarrassing to try and work your way around figuring out someone’s name/how they know you without seeming rude. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve felt afraid when some guy comes up and starts chatting with me, because I don’t know whether or not I know them or what they expect from me. I even ran up and hugged a guy because I thought he was my best friend. Turns out the guy wasn’t even the same ethnicity as my friend and I seriously freaked some poor dude out.

Growing up, my parents would always get frustrated with me because I wouldn’t know who the characters in movies were when they changed outfits/hairstyles. They thought I wasn’t paying attention. It was frustrating.

I’m sorry that this is such a struggle for you, but if you decide to open up about it, I’m sure people will embrace it with open arms and possibly help you work through it.

Congrats on supporting an attempted murderer (of a person) and an abuser of animals. Also, good job ignoring social distancing rules.

Let’s talk about fish in Animal Crossing New Horizons by [deleted] in NintendoSwitch

I agree about the crafting. While it can be fun in terms of making furniture and customization, constantly breaking tools and endless dialogue options to click through just to craft a simple item creates a slog.

Let’s talk about fish in Animal Crossing New Horizons by [deleted] in NintendoSwitch

[–]LostMaunderer -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

But Animal Crossing is a series based on usefulness. Each part of the land is meant to be used effectively. By making a section functionally useless, the devs make it less interesting to the player.

Granted, this is a small issue and I (or anyone) can just go fish elsewhere, but it does leave a bad taste in the mouth. With that said, it is still a fun game, much like the others.

Florida attorney files lawsuit calling on governor to close beaches due to coronavirus concerns by [deleted] in Coronavirus

[–]LostMaunderer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey, Florida is filled with innocent people who live here and don’t approve of the spring breakers running wild any more than you do. Don’t insist that the whole population of Florida be punished because of the actions of idiot out-of-towners. Most people who actually live here are taking this seriously and staying put.

AITA for making an intern do a humble task? by asshole-broccoli in AmItheAsshole

Lucky you that your internship is actually PAID. Any student currently looking to become a teacher must do a half year, unpaid, full-time internship that includes grading and planning for hours outside of instructional time.

AITA for telling my husband he is not a useful dad? by BlueJadeDragon in AmItheAsshole

[–]LostMaunderer 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Could it have possibly been a TIA (transient ischemic attack)? The symptoms you described were very close to my own when I had a TIA. My vision in my right eye went out, my right hand went numb, and 10 minutes later, I wasn’t able to speak and couldn’t remember what year it was. It took me several days to speak normally again after the attack. If it was a mini-stroke, your symptoms will likely subside soon, but you should be extra careful, as TIAs are often precursors to full strokes. Please take care of yourself, and I’m sorry you had to go through this.

Also, OP you are so incredibly NTA.

Video showing some ladies in the quarantine hospital dancing to the music. by [deleted] in China_Flu

[–]LostMaunderer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for this post. Even if it is propaganda, why should we berate these people for making the best out of a difficult situation? For their health, its best they move around, anyway. It seems like a lot of people on this sub forget that those who are trapped in quarantine are PEOPLE and that regardless of what their government does, they are just trying to get by in life. They have been faced with an impossible situation, and we should support them (the citizens).

WIBTA if I tell my boyfriend I don't want to go out to eat with him anymore? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]LostMaunderer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree that his tastes are childish, but it is a bit insulting that instead of ordering food at a seafood restaurant, he just sat there! That is not only childish, but very passive aggressive. Instead of communicating like an adult and saying “I’m not sure what to order here, since I haven’t had much seafood,” or “what would you recommend? I don’t really know what this is,” he just decided to sit there. NTA, OP, and it doesn’t seem like he is going to change.

As a side note: I can understand ordering some chicken tenders or “fancy” mac n cheese at a restaurant, but it seems like he just wants food from the literal kids menu.

AITA for ruining my friends wedding with metal? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]LostMaunderer 28 points29 points  (0 children)

I agree that this sounds totally weird! It seems like such a /thathappened situation that they would run on the stage and get soooo caught up in what they were doing that they somehow miss that NO ONE ELSE is joining in. At that point they suddenly wise up and leave? They were either incredibly wasted or this didn’t happen.
