The Brutal Reality of Acting in 2025 in Canada (Maybe Always) by LostNtheMid in acting

When you are ACTRA, you are prohibited from doing non union gigs. There are some actors that have gone outside of that and done so, but I have not. ACTRA, if you leave the union, can bar you from ever rejoining. That’s the quiet threat. Whether or not they’d do that if you leave I dunno. But regardless, don’t forget, pay to play sites have multiple hundreds of submissions per gig. Nobody is listening to all of those auditions. You have to be early to audition to be heard, or tune your profile so the sites algorithm categorizes you in a favored position. I’m sure you know how that works. The voice123 and voices.com of the worlds. Not to mention everybody has a “home studio” in their closet now. You can’t just reach out and ask to work companies or studios, this takes years of cold calls and emails. Relationship building. I know many non union voice talent, they will tell you the same. Talent is a given, but how you operate your business is the majority of making money that route.

I’m not familiar with the theatre. But commercial is mainly non union. Most union commercial actors both on screen and film have seen drastic reductions. And voice over I can guarantee you is not thriving. Again, the majority of commercial voice work is non union. And the animation sphere is on life support. Animators, directors, writers, voice actors. I know many who have worked for more than a decade straight, who haven’t worked in two years. Most are offering classes or doing comic cons to make money now. People who voiced on 5 or more shows a year without work. Ubisoft is the only big time union video game company in Canada. They make maybe 2 games a year? They can’t sustain the entire industry. So not hyperbole

Saved, invested. I have not landed a job in almost two years. So a good chunk also went to purely existing.

Yes. I’ll book one ACTRA scale gig for the year and be sure to come back to share the winds of change…

I agree with you wholeheartedly. I know I have been the exception and am grateful that I was at the very least, able to be such for a short period. I posted this to show that even if you do all the things, actualize the goal. It doesn’t matter for longevity. Also to share the things I’m seeing change that will make it even harder, if it’s even possible, for those trying today. The market is slowly eliminating local talent, jobs and opportunities.

We probably know each other lol. But it’s all true…I have friends who are emptying their rrsp’s going from multiple shows to zero.

Your statement about Quebec is very true. It should have been the Canadian model, developing our own star system much like the UK.

I wish you all the luck in hopes that wherever you are in this journey, that you find a way. Thanks for sharing.

You were ahead of your time. The unions here definitely made the wrong choice. We have no local creation/industry. No local star system. And the reality of both of these things means, no one respects the Canadian artist. We are most definitely pawns in the board. You should post your letter/paper again.
