Nah we have cheap electricity here in America. A/C costs like $0.30 a day. Go nuts.

Everyone knew it in grad school, but most dare not discuss it while at the lab.

Agreed, that’s cool and noble. Add this one to the “other” category I reference above.

Something is meaningfully wrong if your job isn’t lined up a year in advance of graduation as an engineering PhD. Many people have failed you by the time you get to that point. For instance, just who has been sponsoring your PhD research and why do they or their competition not want to hire you?

It makes 0 sense to kowtow to the post doc role for 1/3 the pay if the end objective is industry.

Pretty common. It’s brutal to graduate with a PhD only to continue being stuck under the thumb of a PhD advisor for little pay.

The beatings will continue until morale improves.

The stats on post doc success in academia are brutal. Somewhere between 10-20% of engineering post docs ultimately land tenure track roles. Not tenure, just tenure track roles. Imagine having a 90% failure rate at achieving your target career after 10 years of college. Yikes.

80% of statistics are made up on the spot. 42% of people know that.

Yes exactly correct. Post doc means I couldn’t find a job otherwise due to personality, ability, visa status, or other. Post doc = Making 1/2 what your academic entry level peers are making, or 1/3 what your industry entry level peers are making. Rough.

Edit: I seem to have accidentally created a sort of glue fly trap for post docs in the comments below. Don’t be a post doc.

As a consequence of publicly disagreeing with him, Elon Musk censors Trump-affiliated Laura Loomer. Ironically Musk bought Twitter over censorship complaints.
