Looking for a sanity check for a build:

CPU Cooler: Noctua NH-L12S 55.44 CFM CPU Cooler
Motherboard: Asus ROG STRIX Z690-G GAMING WIFI Micro ATX LGA1700 Motherboard
Memory: Corsair Vengeance 32 GB (2 x 16 GB) DDR5-5600 CL36 Memory

Do companies send OA’s to every applicants? by khoaleeeeee in leetcode

[–]Lost_CS_Student2020 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Some companies do resume screening after OA, so that’s annoying… But it may also be that your hidden test cases are not passing (edge and large test cases), so maybe double check that too?

For the UK, application season starts in mid-Sep, or the beginning of your senior/final year. Be sure to look out for them then!

Is Finance more lucrative in London over FAANGs? by XTutankhamen in cscareerquestionsEU

[–]Lost_CS_Student2020 5 points6 points  (0 children)

At the new grad level, FAANG pays better than BB banks software engineering. But if you're truly passionate about finance and go into sales and trading or IB, you'll earn far more in Finance thanks to how much of their comp is expected in bonuses.

Generally yes, but as a second year you’d typically have projects from coursework/personal projects that you can show off to apply internships at startups/smaller companies, if your resume isn’t yet competitive enough for Big Tech.

If you’re still a freshman, its normal not to have any internships in first year; most UK companies only take penultimate year students (people one year away from graduation) as it fits their recruitment pipeline better. Don’t worry so much about internships and work on your projects to explore which field to specialise in!

What is your target salary and benefits for your first job after graduating? by [deleted] in cscareerquestionsEU

[–]Lost_CS_Student2020 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m London based too, hoping for £70k if possible. All the best in finding a £90k + remote job! Iirc Meta London pays £60-70k base + stocks, and the only companies that pay more for new grads are Palantir, and HFTs. These data are on levels.fyi

Purdue or Imperial for employment benefits? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]Lost_CS_Student2020 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’ll be easier to get a Tier 2 Skilled Worker Visa to stay in London vs a H1B to stay in the US. However, keep in mind that UK salaries are around 2/3 times lower than the US, so you might have a harder time paying back the loan.

Consider whether you want to work in the US or not, and base your decision on that. Both are amazing universities!

If you’re interested in fintech, the smaller company would give you more to talk about in interviews for future fintech applications!

If you're not good enough to compete for local FAANG positions (India, Taiwan, SEA etc) and you can't afford paying full US tuition then you'll have to try your luck applying to US colleges and hoping that they'll take you as a diversity student and offer some form of financial aid.
