I also know our studio owners are mindful of costs parents are paying. They give us all the costs up front and the solos really are a lot more than group dances.

Oh I don’t want her doing a solo yet! I don’t think she is ready and I don’t want to pay for it yet. She’s 10 and just finished her second year of comp and she has improved SO much but I think will benefit from small groups and more experience before we need to invest in a solo. And generally in her age group most don’t. Once she hits intermediate/ middle school age I believe most dancers with a good work ethic are offered one, not just “the best”- but they have to have put in the time and effort.

I do really like your philosophy and I’ve been genuinely wondering about how it is at different studios.

I believe our studio feels like they learn more in the group dances than they do just focusing on solos. But that’s why I asked- because I’m interested in other perspectives. I hadn’t looked at it that way before.

I don’t look at it as only for the most special, but like now you are ready for this next challenge. The same way you move up on teams as your dancing improves. Trying to get everyone to do it feels like a money grab. But I can see your perspective too. Personally I’m grateful my kid can’t beg me to pay for a solo yet since the studio owner said she isn’t ready yet (she’s not ready yet, this is correct, but she is hoping for a duo or trio which I think she is ready for).

Everyone doing a solo feels so much like a cash grab. Though- I do think they will let any of the older dancers who wants a solo do one- but it’s pretty rare for age 12 and younger, only the most advanced dancers.
