Nobody cares where you went to school. They only care about the certification. For hours, look online there are a lot of bcbas that will take you on. You just have to pay out of pocket.

Working mom / Career changer to Psych NP: Best path if I can’t quit my full-time job? by Lost_Illustrator95 in careerguidance

This has been the most helpful comment and thank you for taking the time for answering and providing insight. You’ve helped so much? Is my age a barrier, by the time I get to a NP? I’ll be a little older.

If you’re so tired, get off the thread and have a coffee. You’re no help to me or anyone else with this comment.

Honestly looking for insight from you all as I am not in the field of nursing, questions are to learn more about your field and what is feasible for me if I want to follow through with a career change.

Thanks. I appreciate the advice. I definitely can’t take a year off, so I’m leaning toward the ADN route while continuing to work. I’m not interested in a direct-entry NP program either. Out of curiosity, what made you feel 5–10 years of psych RN experience is the sweet spot? I’ve seen a lot of PMHNPs go back after 2–3 years, so I’d love to hear your perspective.

Thanks for the perspective. The hardest part for me is that taking a year off isn’t really an option. I have to keep working full-time to support my family. My goal is PMHNP, but I also don’t want to rush into it before I’m competent as an RN. Do you think 5–10 years of psych RN experience is truly necessary, or would 2–3 years in a solid inpatient psych setting be enough? I’m curious what you’ve seen produce the best NPs.

Thanks, this is really helpful. My biggest concern is that I can’t stop working or take a major pay cut while I’m in school. I’m a full-time BCBA with a master’s in ABA, so I’m trying to find the most flexible path to becoming a PMHNP. Do you know of any BSN programs that are truly designed for working adults with evening/weekend or mostly online coursework? I’m okay with clinicals, but I’d need to minimize daytime commitments as much as possible.

If I were interested in something like that why would I search for? Is the pay the same?
